Objective

1st grade students will be able to read The Magic Frog and identify ow and ou words that
make the /ou/ sound.

Materials

White board and dry erase marker


Student notebooks
The Magic Frog

Lesson

Before Reading:
Introduce /ou/
o Have students bring their notebooks and a pencil to the table
o On a dry erase board, write town.
Ask what vowel sound it has
Today we are going to work on words with /ou/
What letters make /ou/ in town?
Underline town.
Explain that sometimes these letters ow sound the same as ou.
o Write about
Show that it has the /ou/ sound.
What letters make the /ou/ sound in about?
Underline about.
Explain that ow or ou can make the /ou/ sound.
o Set up T Chart
Draw on your white board and have students do the same in their
notebook
ou ow
count how
shout wow
round plow
Say the word how and have them write it in the appropriate
column. Help them if needed and pronounce the word with
emphasis on /ou/. Write how on the white board too.
Continue to do this for count, shout, wow, plow,
and round.

Before I read I look a cover and wonder or guess what the
book is about and it helps me get interested in the book. I
predict that the turtle, in this book, is magical and will do
something exciting.

Read aloud and have students follow along
At the end of p. 3 ask what they know so far? (We know theres a
king in China)
o Pages 4-5
Read aloud and have them follow along, until you reach slowly.

making the /ou/ sound?
Continue reading and stop on the word down.

Task for Free Reading
o During free reading, finish this book first and add to the ou ow chart we
created in your notebooks. Then when we come back tomorrow tell me if
your predictions matched too.

Assessment

Formative assessment during the guided reading session to see if students were
understanding the concept that ow and ou both make /ou/. Look over their notebooks the
next day to see if they were accurately able to identify /ou/ words.
