TokyoPopLabisamultifunctionalbuildingthataimstocombinethe
traditionalorientalarchitecturewiththecontemporaryJapaneseculture.

Theprojectcanbedescribedasacivicpavilion,interruptedvariouslyby
hoistedvolumesofdiscrete,localizedactivity.Belowandinbetweenthese
floatingvolumes,urbanlifeextendsseamlesslyintothebuilding.Throughan
open,andcarefullyconsideredplan,theschemeestablishesanurban,public
forumforpopularculture.

Theprojectuniquelyinvertsthetraditionalmodelofacontainedexhibition
spacebydistributingmediathroughouttheprimarypublicspacethe
circulationsurroundingthedifferentiatedvolumes.Withineachofthe
distributedvolumes,academicfunctionsincludingclassroomsandalecture
hall,arecontained.Ratherthanassumeasingularorlimitedexpression,the
proposalestablishesaforumtoexhibit,celebrate,discuss,anddebate,theebb
andflowofpopularcultureinitsvariousformsofexpressionthrough
thoughtfulprogrammingofpublicspace.

Thebuildingisaglasscaseinwhichthegroundflooriscompletelypermeable.
Anoplanplatformthathomesthecaff,partoftheworkshopandthefree
exhibition.OnthesouthernpartofthesiteaJapanesegardencreatesagreen
beltbetweentheculuralcenterandtheclosestbuilding.ThelibraryandtheIT
suitearesituatedunderground.Theyreceivelightfromseveralpatiosgardens
thatcreateavisualconnectionwiththeotherareasofthebuilding.Suspend
aboveground,theclassroomsandworkshopsaresituatedontheleftvolumes
theexhibitionspacesandtheauditoriumareinthecenterandtheofficesand
conferenceroomsareontherightside.

Thestructuralelements,suchasthewoodencolumns,characterizedthe
internalspacessuggestingthefeatureofJapanesetraditionalarchitecture,
whiletheuppervolumesarewrappedinafabricthatcontainsinternalLEDa
materialthatcreatesaneutralenvironmentsduringthedaytimebutthatcould
alsobeenusedasscreenduringthenight.Awayinorthertoturnpopsome
traditionalbuildingselements.
