Total Area = 2 + 8 + 32 = 42
Choice B

47. PRS = PQS =35o angle formed by a chord in same segment are
always equal.
PRQ = 90o angle formed by diameter at circumference is
always 90o
QRS = 90 35 = 55
Choice A

48. Radius of the circle = r = 5

Circumference = 2 r = 2 x x 5 = 10
Little more than 30
Any closed figure inside circle must be less than 30
Choices C and D are wrong
Now If we join O to A, B, C, D and E we will get five angles at centre each
= 360 5 = 72.
In an isosceles triangle like OCD = 72 will the largest angle
CD (opposite side of the largest angle) will be largest
CD will be greater than 5
AB + BC + CD + DE + AE > 25
This shows choice B and E are also wrong here only one choice left
i.e. choice A which is correct
Choice A

CIRCLES (EXPLANATION)

The set of points in a plane at a same distance from a certain fixed point is called
a circle.

The fixed point is called centre of circle and the distance from a point on circle to
centre is called Radius.

Chord: Line segment obtain by joining any two points on the circle. e.g DE
Diameter: If a chord passes through the centre of the circle is called diameter. In
above figure BC is diameter.

Tangent: A line which touches only one point of the circle is called tangent in
above figure line l is tangent.

Central angle: An angle formed by two radii at centre is called central angle in
above figure AOB is central angle.

Circumference: boundary of a circle is called circumference.

In all circles ratio of circumference to diameter is same and its value is equal to
22/7 or 3.1415926 but for G.R.E, G.M.A.T, S.A.T. it is approximated to 3.14 and it
is sufficient to know that it is little more than 3. We denote this constant ratio by
(Pi).

c
= where c stand for circumference and d for diameter
d
c=.d
c = 2 r (as d = 2r)

The above formula is usually used for finding out value of

circumference.

Arc length: An arc is the portion of circumference. In the

figure AB is an arc of the circle.

Two points on the circle always formed two arcs. The shorter
distance along the circle between AB is called Minor arc and
the longer distance A C B is called Major arc.
Length of an arc depends upon angle it formed at centre of the circle.

Arc length = x2r
360
If an arc is exactly half of the circumference then it is called semicircle (half of the
circle)

Area of Circle: Area of a circle is given by the formula.

A = r2

Sector: It is a portion of a circle bounded by two radii and an

arc in the figure AOB is a sector of angle .

Area of a sector in a circle depends on the central angle

formed by arc AB.

Area of sector AOB = x r2
360
Segment: A chord always divide a circle into two segments
Minor segment (shaded) and Major segment (unshaded).

Area of Segment: There is no direct formula for area of

segment but we can find it out by following method.

Area of segment = Area of sector AOB Area of triangle AOB

Area of circular path around a circle = (R2 r2)

Where R is external radius and r is inner radius.

Properties:
1) A central angle formed by an arc AB is always double in
measure than angle formed at corresponding arc. In circle with
centre O.
AOB = 2 ACB

2) Angle formed by the diameter AB at any point of

circumference is always equal to 90o.

3) Tangent of the circle is always perpendicular to the radius at that point.

4) Radius is always half of the diameter.
5) All radii of a circle are equal.
