Assessment Implementation

Fall 2015
MICROORGANISM WEBQUEST DIRECTIONS

Your task is to identify types of harmful and helpful microorganisms

as well as present examples. This is an individual research project.

Directions:

1. Using the websites provided on Mrs. Gilberts website you will

search for 3-5 harmful and helpful microorganisms (3-5 of

each).

2. You will complete your graphic organizer as you find your

information.

3. Once research is complete you will create two Vokis

presenting your findings. (One for harmful and one for helpful).

Directions on how to create are posted on Mrs. Gilberts

website.

4. You have the option to present to the class if you like once your

project is complete.

REMINDERS: Look at the rubric OFTEN! This will help you achieve

the best grade possible.

Explain Your Findings

When implementing the activity and assessment I found that what worked best was

reviewing the differences between different microorganisms. I did this assessment with two

groups (a high and a low group). The high group did better with working on their own and filling

out their graphic organizer with minimal help. The low group needed more assistance. This

group does come with a paraprofessional that was able to help me assist students who were

struggling. The assessment activity took several class periods to complete. I only see each group

twice a week. The assessment took about two weeks for some to finish.

While it did take the students longer than expected to finish I was very pleased with their

finish products. Majority of students worked very hard each class meeting and were very

involved with their projects. While I did notice that their notetaking skills in the graphic

organizer need work, they did a great job putting together their vokis.

Next time I will devote a class period to each of the following: vokis, graphic organizer

note taking, and finding research online. While the students did do a good job at the end the

beginning of the assessment activity was a little rocky while the students learned how to do each

part of the activity.

High Group Low Group

Overall, the students did very well on their assessment activity. The girls did a little better job

with their overall grade then the boys and the high group did an overall better job than the low

group. I was impressed with their end product with the vokis, but as I mentioned previously their

notetaking and graphic organization needs some work.

The high group consisted of a mix of male and female students and included two gifted

students. The low group consisted of a mix of male and female students and four special

education students.

Future Instructional Plans

Overall I enjoyed this assessment activity and think the finish product was a good one. In

the future I would have a mini unit on finding information through online research and proper

notetaking in a graphic organizer. Not doing this first is the biggest struggle the students ran into.

Also in the future I may allow them to present their findings through another medium like power

point, Prezi, or Powtoon.
