Case 2.

2 Danish International(A)
The case data throws light on multiple issues which can be picked up and further explored
The attitude of the CEO
The work culture at Danish International
The two mergers that have happened and how they could impact the apathy
The clarity/non clarity of job roles in the organization
The participant needs to understand that each one of these could be problematic and could be a probable
cause for discomfort. Thus the management decision involves finding out which of these is basically
creating the disengagement and then taking a decision to resolve it. Taking this as a starting point of
discussion the instructor could seek answers to the case questions
Ans.1. The diagnosis that the doctor - Shameem Naqib is likely to give the CEO is
To find out what could be the is the reason(s) for apathy at Danish International?
Again the emphasis should be on comprehending that the decision entails looking at multiple issues as
stated above and then trying to figure out how to resolve them. The students might come up with various
indicators like organizational health, organizational climate, work culture, employee engagement or job
satisfaction. The instructor might at his/her discretion take on one or more than one of these forward and
evaluate the question for its merit.
Ans.2. To convert the above stated management decision problem into a workable research problem the
instructor is to take the class discussion through a structured problem formulation process. This
requires that the discussion be guided by the step wise structured process of problem formulation
as given in figure 2.3 of the chapter.
The learner should begin by stating who could be the subject experts and industry gurus who
could provide some indication of what to study and explore in the research. These insights would
throw light on what are the variables to be studied to assess the organizational climate of an
organization. The discussion should be oriented towards identifying the specific resources that
might be valuable for this.
The next resource for refining the decision problem into a doable research problem is to conduct a
review of literature. The student on the basis of what he perceives as probable variables that
should be studied and what could be the antecedents or causes for the same, might identify the
available information they would seek in terms of both academic articles and industry best
practices data.
The third method that is critical in this case would be an organizational analysis. This becomes
extremely important as the management problem is specific to a single organization i.e. Danish
International. Thus all policy related documents, historical data, exit interviews, performance
appraisal reports, employee grievances reports and like data, must come out through the
discussion, as the student needs to understand that for diagnosing the case it is extremely critical
that available data be made active use of. This is because there need not be a duplication of effort
and the researcher can use the secondary recorded data to arrive at certain conclusions/hypotheses
that he may further explore.
Further to get a perspective on the topical climate the investigator may also conduct a short
qualitative exploratory survey and carry out unstructured interviews with employees at band II
and III level( as that is where apathy is) to get an insight into the problem.
The participant after a step wise progression could be led into framing a research question which might
be:
What is the employee perception about the current organizational climate at Danish
International?
As stated earlier in answer 1 the students might pick up different indicators that they might wish to study.
The above problem has been only picked up for illustration. Once the students agree on a research
question it needs to be broken down into simple and clearly stated research objectives.
To identify the variables that would be used to assess organizational climate at Danish
international
To study the perception of the employees at different hierarchical( band ) levels on the identified
variables
To compare the perception amongst employee groups on organizational climate
To prepare a comprehensive document on the existing organizational climate at Danish
International
It is to be noted here that in case the students are interested in lets say the antecedents of organizational
climate and are able to identify the probable antecedents, then the students should be led into
understanding that the variables identified by them might have an interlink and a cause and an effect
relationship and thus it would be appropriate to develop a model. Here the instructor can emphasis the
merit of exploring existing frameworks that might have been developed and tested by other researchers
and can be accessed through secondary literature review.
Ans.3. The instructor needs to help the student understand which of the above formulated research
objectives require a hypotheses formulation and which do not. For example the last one does not , while
the third one requires comparative hypotheses to be construed to test the difference in perception of the
climate across hierarchical levels.
