What do they like?

Target function: expressing likes and dislikes 3rd person sing.

Target vocabulary: tennis, cheese, swimming, ice-cream, reading,
football, Maths, children, washing.
Materials: one copy of What do they like? per student. One
copy of the cut-up page per class.
Procedure:
i) Before the class, cut up the page below as indicated and
hide the strips around the class, making it as easy or
difficult as you want.
ii) Present the characters and pre-teach/check
comprehension of vocabulary needed.
iii) Explain the task to students fill the gaps/complete the
sentences on their own copies of the What do they
like? page by searching around the room and completing
their sheet (I usually make mine leave their sheets on
their desks).
iv) When theyve finished, check through by reading to the
class or the students reading back their
answers/walking around together whatever suits your
students.
v) Get the students to draw the things that each subject
likes.

Extensions: you could now play a game to practice short answers

either at a blackboard or with the answers being shouted out
(blackboard preferably). You ask Does the monster like
children? and the students respond.
You could play a memory game where the students have x
amount of time to memorise and then the task of writing what
they remember.
Dont forget about class posters and characters too. Dictation
races are also a possible follow-up activity. The teacher calls out
sentences and students collect them from around the room.
