The Ivory Coast

Mary Mac Roach

There are many countries in the world and because there are many
countries means that there are lots of different languages. The Ivory Coast is
a wonderful country and even though its on the other side of the Earth does
not mean that we should not learn about it. The Ivory Coast has a population
of 20.32 million as of 2013. Thats a lot of people. The capital of the Ivory
Coast is Yamoussoukro. It is the political and administrative capital city.
Yamoussoukro is also an autonomous district of the country. Another very
popular city in the Ivory Coast is Abidjan. Its the countrys major urban
center and it is located near the coast. This is a picture of the countrys flag.
The orange represents the
savanna grasslands, green
represents the coastal
forests, while white is
symbolic of the countrys
rivers. The flags design was
modeled after the French
Tricolore.

Africa is very big, and so are

the countries. The Ivory
Coast
(322,463 km2) is 2.38 times
as big as Alabama (135, 765
km2).

Because the money value is so little and most of the country is in poverty,
the people in the Ivory Coast mainly eat off of the vegetation that they grow.
They eat corn, rice, millet, yams, fried bananas, cornmeal cookies, boiled
cassava and plantains, melon fingers with lime, seasoned meat and
vegetable sauce, baked yams, chilled avocado soup, and vegetable stew.

Home life in America is way different then the home life here. The villages
are very agricultural. They spend much of the middle part of the day not
working. They work in the mornings and evenings. Every day the young girls
in the village will go to the well and get water for the families. They carry the
water in big pans above their heads. The children attend school and the
church is the center of the village.

In the city, the most popular businesses are street vendors. They can sell
you anything you imagine. You might see a wood carver next to a plumber. In
the villages, people will sell things like eggs and produce on the sides of the
roads. The education in the Ivory Coast is not very good. The villages resist
government run schools and prefer to educate their children on their own.

For entertainment, the little girls play with dolls and children play with
marbles. They like to go fishing and absolutely love to play soccer. They
dont have much so they also make up little games to play. The music is big
in the churches and they usually have a trumpet player. The choir is fantastic
to listen to. They love to build furniture in the cities and hand carved
furniture. Wood-working is big in the Ivory Coast.

They grow rubber trees and have lots of cocoa beans, so that is their
number one export.
The main religions in the Ivory Coast are Islam and Christianity. Islam is
practiced by 40.2% of the population, Christianity by 45.7%, and 12.8% has
no religion or follows animism. Some of the country practices things like
witchcraft, but Methodist churches are starting to show up more and more in
tiny villages.

The climate in the Ivory Coast is

tropical/humid it is very hot during the
summers. The Ivory Coast is famous for its
biodiversity, with more than 230
mammals, 700 birds, 125 reptiles, 100
fish, and over 35 different types of
amphibians, not to mention around 4,000
different plant species.

In the Ivory Coast, the currency is West

African CFA francs.

Wilfried Bony and Arthur Boka are 2 very

famous soccer players from the Ivory
Coast. They both play on the Ivory Coast
national team and have both participated
in the FIFA World cup.

In conclusion, the Ivory Coast is a country of cultural and geographic

diversity. It was very fascinating to study and learn about.
