Classifying living things

Living things are classified into five kingdoms:
Animal kingdom. They are multicellular, they feed on other living
things and can move.
Plant kingdom. They are multicellular, they make their own food
and cant move.
Fungi kingdom. They can be unicellular or multicellular, they feed
on other living things and cant move
Protista kingdom. They can be unicellular or multicellular. Some
protists make their own food. For example, algae.
Monera kingdom. Monerans are unicellular. For example, bacteria.

Vertebrates
They have a skeleton with a backbone and vertebrae. Vertebrates are
classified into five groups:
Mammals (viviparous, fur or hair, breathe with lungs, legs)
Birds (oviparous, feathers, breath with lungs, two legs and two
wings)
Reptiles (oviparous, scales, breath with lungs, legs)
Amphibians (oviparous, breath through gills and after through lungs,
adults have legs)
Fish (oviparous, scales, breath through gills, fins)

Invertebrates
They dont have a skeleton
Sponges (attached to surfaces under the sea, they filter water to
obtain food)
Cnidarians (soft bodies, poisonous tentacles, some move)
Worms ( long, soft bodies, no legs, some terrestrial and some
aquatic)
Molluscs (soft body, hard shell, most aquatic, some live on land)
Echinoderms (marine animals, skeleton made up of plates, spines)
Arthropods (external skeleton, insects, arachnids, crustacean and
myriapods)

Plants cant move and make their own food. They are classified into two
groups:
Non-seed plants. They dont produce flowers or seeds. They
reproduce with spores. There are two types:
o Mosses.
Very small, tiny stems and leaves.
Humid and shady places.
Spores in a capsule at the end of a filament.
o Ferns.
Longer than mosses.
Humid and shady places.
Large leaves (fronds)
Spores in sori, under the leaves.
Seed plants. They reproduce with seeds. The seeds germinate and
form a new plant. Two types of seed plants:
o Gymnosperms (non-flowering plants). They dont produce
flowers or fruits. For example, pine trees.
o Angiosperms (flowering plants). They produce flowers and
fruits. For example, apple trees.
