Personal Statement Roco Iannone

I have always enjoyed art since I was very young. I can remember spending most of my
childhood drawing. When I was little I have done a lot of things, but painting and taking
drawing courses were the only ones I could never stop doing. I have always wanted to
learn as much as I could about art. I took courses of sculpture in clay, painting and drawing
in the earliest stages of my life.

For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to go to an art school. When I went
to the high school and I had the oportunity to choose between differents orientations, I
selected the option of Art, design and comunication. Also, I took two courses of drawing
in that time, one when I was twelve (but this one gave to me a lot of vices in my
drawings), and the other one since i was fourteen until I turned seventeen. Enjoyed a lot
both of them, and always drew very much by myself.

When i finished school, I had to travel to another city because in the place where I used to
live there was not available the degree of Fine Arts. I started the bachelor of Fine Arts in
the National College of La Plata. Now, I passed to the fourth year with success. My grade
average is 8,50 and I have completed 69 % of the degree. Also In the last three years I
took an extracurricular course of three classes per week of drawing, painting and
sculpture. I learned very much indeed.

The fact of living in another city, with all the new learnings that offered the college, and
with mi new classmates who came from all over the country, meant for me a huge
apprenticeship. My point of view of art and life changed a lot. I went deeply into the
drawing and the sculpture. I comprehended how to construct the structural part of both of
them. I understood that without the analysis of the figure it is much more difficult to arrive
to a good result.

I like to think the work of art like as a micro-world. In there we can find directions, tensions,
different planes on the figure or in the background, colors, tonal values, etc. All these are
in a dependency relationship where if one of these elements changes, the entire work
needs to be rethought. I find this highly interesting. I like to think it about sculpture . As
the resources are fewer in comparison with, for example painting, I consider that the
virtual connection of planes inside the figure is one of the elements that can make the
work of art functional. Namely, if the parts are connected we can have our micro-world,
where all the parts have more strenght and where the sculpture holds up wherever you
see it.

I want to make of my work of art a micro-world.I seek that all the pieces fit and that
depend on each other .Generally the work of art is a micro-world, but in the beginning it is
difficult to realize. Making a true micro - world is not so easy. There are a thousand of
possibilities to achieve it, and also a thousand of ways to do it wrong. I know that my
searching is about this now, but when I find what I am looking for,I will already have a new
challenge . That's how art works, or maybe thats how life works, but in art it is much more
evident to me.

I want to keep studying as much as I can. Not only studying but doing, and discovering
things in the process. I belive that in art there is a world of possibilities, and i find this
world extremely intriguing. Of course i want to graduate myself, to become a teacher and
to do a posgraduate. But all of this in the search of learning from my own production and
to exchange learnings with those who are following a way similar to mine.
