Lengths Available
Hi*Lite suspension insulators are available in lengths
appropriate for 69 kV through 765 kV. Longer lengths
can be produced for special projects. Length incre-
ments are approximately three inches.
Product Updates
Hi*Lite XL insulator end fittings are attached with
an improved crimping process using the successful
compound ESP. Housings manufactured with ESP principles of earlier Hi*Lite designs. The corona shield

Corona Performance
Hi*Lite XL suspension insulators are RIV and corona free through 161 kV, by the use of integral Corona Shield
Rings (CSR). Due to the small diameter of the end fittings, corona shielding is necessary at 230 kV and above.
The table below details the rings necessary for voltages equal to or exceeding that listed in the column header.
The physical and electrical values for the insulators on pages 26-8 through 26-10 are shown without corona
protection above 161 kV. Ohio Brass has therefore provided the table below that yields the physical and electrical
changes to the insulator when rings are installed for voltages above 161 kV.

Washability
Hi*Lite Line Post insulators listed in this catalog are
suitable for flood washing up to 200 psi. The design in-

potting compounds or adhesives. SML ratings are 120 kN, 160 kN and 210 kN for insulators furnished
with IEC fittings. For insulators furnished with ANSI fittings, SML
ratings available are 111 kN (25K lbs.), 133 kN (30K lbs.), 160 kN
(36K lbs.) and 222 kN (50K lbs.) RTL ratings are consistent with the
IEC and ANSI standard. Actual factory routine tests are conducted at
loads equal to or greater than the RTL rating.
Markings for XL insulator design are permanently embossed into the
ground end corona shielding rings (CSR). Markings include SML and
RTL, part number, assembly date code, and Ohio Brass identifica-
tion. These marks are consistent with the IEC and ANSI standard.
Lengths Available
Hi*Lite XL suspension insulators are available in lengths appropriate
for 69 kV through 765 kV. Longer lengths can be produced for special
projects. Intermediate lengths (utilizing an additional 2 sheds) are
also available (those that fall in between the catalog numbers listed in

Packaging
Hi*Lite suspension insulators are packaged in appropriate quanti-
ties in wooden crates 111.7 cm (44 inches) wide with the length of
the crate determined by the length of the insulator. The height of the
crate is normally less than 114.3 cm (45 inches). The gross weight
will not exceed 909 kg (2,000 lbs.). Crates are available for both
ROD domestic and export transportation.

Leakage Distance
Hi*Lite XL insulators feature high leakage distance for maximum
resistance to contamination and leakage currents. Specific leakage
distance (leakage divided by dry arcing distance) is higher than that
of porcelain. Hi*Lite XL insulators are offered in standard uniform
weathershed configuration and alternating (major/minor) weather-
shed configuration for applications requiring increased specified
leakage distances.

Corona Performance
Hi*Lite XL suspension insulators are RIV and corona free through 161 kV, by the use of integral Corona Shield
Rings (CSR). Corona shielding is necessary at 220/230 kV and above. The table below details the rings neces-
sary for voltages equal to or less than that listed in the column header.

Design Characteristics
1. Long Duration Current Impulse: Depending upon the system impedance and system conditions, power lines
can discharge currents of low magnitude for significantly long durations as compared to a lightning stroke. The
Ohio Brass MOV blocks are tailored to meet this challenge. MOV block samples are subjected to 18 to 20 dis-
charges each with a current magnitude and duration as listed on Table 3 with one minute cooling interval between
each discharge. The sample discharge voltages are verified before and after long duration discharges with a 10 kA
8/20 s current wave to confirm no damage. Table 3 shows that the actual changes are well below the tolerances
allowed by standards, thus demonstrating product excellence.
2. Accelerated Aging: Ensuring stable arrester performance, after installation, is a necessity. MOV blocks are
thermally aged at 115C for 1000 hours at voltages specified by standards while continuous measurements of disc
watts loss are recorded. Excellent stability is demonstrated with a continuous reduction in watts loss for the entire
test period.
3. Heat Dissipation Behavior: The intent of this test is to ensure that the prorated test sample used for durability
design tests has a thermal cooling characteristic that is slower than or equal to the actual unit. All prorated samples
showed a slower cooling rate than a complete unit, demonstrating sample validity.
4. Operating Duty Performance: Distribution systems are affected more by lightning strokes than switching
operations. The probability of the number of strokes and the magnitude of these strokes depend upon several fac-
tors that cannot be controlled or predicted accurately. Dynavar arresters are tested to ensure they are capable of
withstanding high current impulses while demonstrating thermal recovery. During this test, the MOV test samples
are subjected to twenty 8/20 s lightning strokes and two 4/10 s high current impulses of specified magnitude
followed by another 8/20 s discharge voltage verification impulse. The prorated sections demonstrated thermal
stability. Table 5 compares the actual performance of the prorated sections under these test conditions with the
tolerances permitted by the standards. It is evident that the arrester designs performed much superior to standard
requirements.

5. Disconnector Operation: It is a common utility practice to attach a ground lead disconnector to distribution
arresters. This is done to ensure continuous system operation in the rare event of an arrester short circuit and to
provide a visual indication of the disconnected unit. It is also important to verify that the disconnector does not op-
erate under surge conditions but isolates the ground lead during arrester short circuit. Samples with disconnectors
were subjected to low current long duration tests and duty cycle/operating duty tests as summarized in Tables 3
and 5 to verify normal arrester operation under surge conditions. The disconnector operation under faulted condi-
tion was also verified. Table 6, specifies the current sensitivity and the time response of the standard disconnector.
Standards specify the detonation curve be defined for fault currents ranging from 20 to 800 Amps.
Utilities have identified the necessity to have a more sensitive and disconnector that isolates the ground lead at
lower current levels. Ohio Brass now offers its advanced disconnector with its IEEE C62.11 compliant PDV Optima
arresters. Table 7 specifies the characteristics of the Optima disconnector. The disconnector will isolate the ground
lead at currents as low as 1 A. This has been achieved with a patented capacitor-based disconnector design instead
of the traditional resistor designs. The capacitor-based isolator is more reliable as it prevents thermal run away
situations that might be possible with commonly available resistor designs.

6. Power Frequency Voltage versus Time Characteristics: Power systems are not ideal and periodically have
temporary over voltages (TOV) caused by a variety of reasons. The magnitude and duration of the system-gener-
ated TOV that the arrester can withstand is best expressed graphically. The three curves on page 7 show the TOV
capability versus time for the Ohio Brass arresters in this catalog.
The PDV-100 Optima utilizes a capacitance-based isolator which improves the TOV capability while increasing
the reliability of disconnector function. The PDV-100 Optima technology results in a family of TOV curves that are
a function of the voltage UC of the arrester.
For more information, contact your Ohio Brass sales representative.
7. Partial Discharge Performance: Partial discharges in arresters can result in radio interferences and initiate
material fatigue that can reduce the life of arresters. Both the IEC 60099-4 and IEEE C62.11 standards require that
the arrester shall demonstrate a partial discharge value of less than 10pC. All Ohio Brass arresters, comply with
the standards.
8. Pressure Relief Capability: Ohio Brass arresters are designed such that, during an unlikely condition of a short
circuit, they demonstrate sufficient explosion proof and shatter resistant properties. It is important to consider both
the symmetrical R.M.S capability as well as the asymmetrical peak capability depending on system X/R conditions.
Table 8 displays the demonstrated high and low symmetrical RMS current withstands and their durations. Table 8
also outlays the asymmetrical peak withstand and its duration. It can be observed that the asymmetrical peak to
the symmetrical peak ratios are greater than 2.5.

Ordering your arrester: Arresters are identified by their 10 digit part numbers. Choose the appropriate first six
digits of the arrester shown in the Catalog Number column of the electrical characteristics table in the following
pages. Based on the hardware configuration, please select your choice of the last four digits. Table 12 shows the
available hardware for each arrester group. Ex: For an IEC PDV-100 arrester of 8.4 kV UC without any hardware, the
catalog number would be 214210-CCAA. For an IEEE PDV-Optima of 8.4 kV UC with basic hardware the catalog
number is 213709-7202.

Application
PDE arresters are designed for use with 200 Amp loadbreak bushings and interfaces with other 200 Amp load-
break accessories that conform with IEEE Standard 386. A PDE arrester installed at the end of a radial system or
at both ends of an open point on a loop system will provide excellent protection against high voltage surges result-
ing from lightning or switching. When combined with an Ohio Brass PVR (Riser Pole) arrester installed at the end
of a radial system or at the next piece of apparatus downstream, optimum protection can be achieved. Consult
your Hubbell Power Systems account representative.

COMMON TERMS
Discharge Voltage The voltage the arrester develops while discharging a surge to ground. This is a measure
of the amount of protection; lower discharge voltage yields better protection.
MCOV Maximum Continuous Operating Voltage. The maximum 60 cycle voltage the arrester can support for its
lifetime. The arrester MCOV must be equal to or greater than the system continuous line-to-ground voltage.
TOV Temporary Over-voltage. A situation in which the temporary line-to-ground 60 Hz voltage exceeds the
nominal system voltage. (This is a common cause of failure of MOV type surge arresters.)
Thermal runaway When an MOV arrester fails due to excess heat causing the arrester to conduct too much
current. This will only happen if the arrester has absorbed more than its rated energy.
200 Amps This is the rated operating current of the system.
15, 25 & 35 kV class These are the levels of cable insulation available in the system.

For effectively grounded systems, the MCOV selected is usually the maximum line to
ground voltage of the system. For impedance grounded or ungrounded lines, an arrester
MCOV that is closer to 90% of the system voltage should be selected. If your system
voltage is not present on this chart, please contact your Hubbell representative.
1
MCOV is also referred to as UC or COV (Continuous Operating Voltage).

Ohio Brass surge arresters use only the finest metal oxide varistor (MOV) blocks so that surge
energy is conducted to ground without compromising the insulation integrity of your transmis-
sion or distribution system. The amount of energy a surge arrester is exposed to is depen-
dent on the system. Thus, Ohio Brass manufactures four MOV block diameters to efficiently
channel surge energy to ground.
Block diameter determines the amount of energy that an arrester can absorb. The energy
absorption capability of the PROTECTA*LITE system is simply the amount of energy that the
MOV blocks can absorb without entering a mode of thermo-mechanical arrester failure.
Not sure which block size to pick? Contact your Hubbell representative. After answer-
ing a few simple questions, we will help you determine what energy capability your
PROTECTA*LITE arresters need to ensure years of reliable service.
35-11
Single Shot Energy Capability - The maximum amount of energy that an MOV block can
withstand from an instantaneous surge discharge.
Double Shot Energy Capability - The maximum energy that can be discharged to ground
from multiple surge events that take place within one min-
ute. Lightning surges are typically comprised of multiple
discharges.
Example:
If you order a PROTECTA*LITE with the following characteristics:
84 kV MCOV
48 mm block construction
3.4kJ
Single Shot Capability = kV x 84kV MCOV = 285.6 kJ
MCOV

PVI Terminals
Standard line and ground terminals will accommodate conductor sizes from 1/4 inch to 13/16
inch diameter (.25 - .81 inch diameter). The terminals are of hot-dip galvanized malleable
iron, compatible with either aluminum or copper.
Standard Line terminal Number 71874 Standard Ground terminal Number 71874.
Mounting Positions
Type PVI arresters may be mounted vertically, horizontally or
underhung, provided the cantilever moment is not excessive.
(PVI 98, 106, 115kV MCOV arresters are designed for vertical
mounting only.) Underhung mounting requires factory assem-
bly of the base mounting hardware at the top of the arrester.
Use catalog number series 3020XX3001.
The rated (ultimate) cantilever moments of Type PVI arrester
with the tripod base is 10,000 in-lbs and the maximum work-
ing moment is 5,000 in-lbs. For the small base, the maximum
working moment is 3,000 in-lbs.
For horizontal mounting, the residual cantilever loads are
given below. They already take into account the reasonable
worst case loading consisting of 120 m.p.h. wind and the
weight of the arrester and represent the maximum residual
load that can be applied to the horizontal arrester without Crossarm Mounting
exceeding its maximum cantilever working load. Type PVI arresters can be

Mechanical Strength
The low silhouette and simple columnar shape of DynaVar
arresters minimize wind resistance. They will withstand winds
as high as 120 m.p.h. with a generous safety factor.
The tallest DynaVar VL/VN arrester will also withstand in
excess of 0.2 g of earthquake shock. As arrester height
decreases at lower voltages, strength improves progressively.
Throughout the range of sizes, this exceeds general station
requirements.
Cantilever Strength
The high cantilever strengths of DynaVar arresters adequate-
ly meet service requirements with generous safety factors for
windstorms or earthquakes. Horizontal force can be estab-
lished by dividing cantilever moment by distance between
base mounting and center of force.

Introduction
Ohio Brass has been producing high voltage surge arresters since the 1950s and offers a wide variety of DynaVar
metal oxide gapless arresters designed to protect transformers, switchgear, and other equipment from switching
and lightning surges. These arresters meet or exceed all requirements of the most current IEC standard and can
be selected to match a range of contamination and energy requirements. Table 1 shows the Ohio Brass offerings
included in this catalog.
Dedication to Quality
Ohio Brass has demonstrated that its Quality Management system is in compliance with ISO 9001:2000 and main-
tains stringent testing controls in accordance with IEC 60099-4 to ensure that the customer receives high quality
with every product. Ohio Brass also performs various Quality Assurance tests on every batch of metal-oxide varistor
(MOV) blocks. The routine and design tests listed below, in addition to highly controlled manufacturing processes,
ensure that Ohio Brass products demonstrate a superior level of quality. Our commitment to quality and continuous
improvement is what the industry expects of its Leader.

Arrester Application
The primary factor in determining the most appropriate arrester is its continuous line-to-ground
operating voltage (Uc or COV). When selecting the appropriate DynaVar arrester for an effectively
grounded neutral system, it is desirable to choose an arrester with the lowest Uc that will meet or
exceed the systems line-to-ground voltage. The arrester application example illustrates the selection
process that should be followed to choose the correct arrester for each system voltage.

Construction
Polymer housings are resistant to rough
handling and will not shatter in case of a
failure.
In comparison to equivalent porcelain-housed
arresters, these polymer housed gapless
arresters are typically half the weight. This
makes transportation, handling and installa-
tion much easier.
The single-unit, high voltage designs provide
improved contamination performance over
multi-unit designs.
Closer spacing Smaller line end castings
and smaller grading rings allow closer phase-
to-phase spacing.
MOV blocks are centered and restrained
with tightly woven fiberglass filament strands
impregnated with epoxy resin.
Minimal Internal Atmosphere Will not
Breathe or leak which eliminates moisture
ingress, a cause of arrester failure.
For non-catalog polymer arresters that require higher creepage or special application
please consult your Ohio Brass representative.
