A. Description of the Project

1. Rationale

Harvesting energy through wind has received a lot of attention

since the discovery of power generation. The research motivation

within this field is due to the flexibility of application in small electronic

as well as large electrical devices. The ultimate goal is to power

small devices by using the wind energy available from the

environment. If this can be achieved, the use of an external power

source as well as the maintenance costs can be reduced (Williams &

Yates, 1996). There are many ways of generating alternative energy.

One example is through aero elastic flutter coupled with magnets and

coils. The cutting of flux generates electric charges when a

mechanical flutter is applied to it. That is why wind generators are

ideal for power generation (Inman, et. al., 2009).

Due to the relatively small indigenous energy exploration, the

Philippines relies on imported and unrenewable energy sources to

produce and supply the electrical demand (Barbotte, 2009).

However, harnessing and utilizing renewable energy has been a

critical component the governments strategy to provide energy

supply for the country. This is evident in the power sector where the

dependency from imported and polluting fuels has decreased while

generation from geothermal and hydro resources has increased

(Department of Energy, 2015).

Brownouts in Davao City have worsened due to the shortage in

supply of power (Bagaford, 2015). To relieve the energy shortage, the

government plans to build more coal-fired plants. The warning was

given ahead and contracts have already been prepared for the green

lights of the reported more expensive, dirty and non-renewable power

(Doronila, 2012).

The purpose of this study is to generate power from the

environment, wind. The biggest challenge here is to scale down the

size of a conventional wind generator and to create an appropriate

design that will not sacrifice its efficiency. That is why an innovative

design was formulated by the researchers. The device can be placed

anywhere where there is abundant amount of wind to harvest. The

design should not also use up a lot of space as it is compact. With

this objectives, the study aims to minimize energy consumption from

power plants and instead generate energy in a more efficient and

practical way.

2. Objectives of the Study

2.1 General Objectives

The main objective of the study is to design a wind strip

generator that is compact and ideal for microelectronic applications.

2.2 Specific Objectives

To design a wind strip generator

To establish an output of 1200mAh or greater

To test the wind strip generators design capability

3. Methodology

This study is an applied research, which the researchers will

design a wind belt generator which will be generating electrical

energy suitable for microelectronic devices. The wind energy will be

harvested by the belts fluttering and lastly, will be transduced by the

generator.

Materials Needed

- AC/DC Generator

- Wind Belt Fixture

- DC Metering Modules (ammeter and Voltmeter)

- Tachometer (Speed Measuring Device)

- Miscellanous

Research process

The study aims to design a wind strip generator that can

generate a charging parameter for 1200mAh. According to Siskind

(1966), in getting the number of poles in a specified design generator,

it must follow the formula which is, number of poles is equal to 120

multiplied by the frequency (60 Hertz), all over the desired RPM

(revolution per minute). By establishing the desired power output of

the electric generator fabrication will be next. After the fabrication, the

testing of the generator will follow as well as the data gathering.

B. Scope of Work (Expected Output)

This research study was conducted under certain limitations.

This project was bounded to produce 1200mAh or greater. This

parameter will serve as the rating for powering microelectronic

devices.

C. Research Study Duration

The duration of the research study will be three to four months.

D. Approximate Budget to Complete the Study

The approximate budget for this project is P 8, 000.00 (eight

thousand pesos).

1 Wind Strip Cost... 3, 000

2 Fabrication.. 2, 000
3 Generator Wires 1, 000
4 Others. 2, 000
