Getting More Out of Mass

The Lord Be With You
Next, the priest says, The Lord be with you.
This is more than a simple salutation, like good
morning. In the Bible, this expression is used to
address people, called together by God, to tend
to an important mission one that couldnt be
accomplished without help. Consider Moses at
the burning bush, or Joshua when he was called
to lead the people into the Promised Land, or
Gideon when he was called to rescue the people
from their oppressors. Many Old Testament he-
roes heard these words when God called them
to their sacred task. Mary also heard these
words when Gabriel announced that she would
be the mother of the messiah. In each case, the
person involved desperately needed Gods help
to carry out the mission, and thats why God or
his messenger, an angel, says to the person.
The Lord be with you. But what does it mean
for us to hear those words at Mass? The Lord be
with you reminds us of the daunting mission
God entrusts to us in the liturgy to encounter his
word in the Scriptures and his presence in the
Eucharist. This is not something to take for
granted. As sinners, we arent worthy to
encounter God in this intimate way. But God
invites us despite our faults and he will help us
prepare our soles to enter into these sacred
mysteries. So when the priest says, The Lord is
with you, its as if he is saying to us, Get ready!
May God be with you as you prepare for this
most sacred encounter with him in the Mass.

Lessons from Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle, a great spiritual teacher. As you read
and implement these teachings into your life, you
will not only increase the quality of your experience
of being alive but also encounter the living God.
Lesson #5: You cannot find Love outside
you.
Love is a state of being. Your love is not out-
side; it is deep within you. You can never lose it,
and it cannot leave you. It is not dependent on
some other body, some external form. You
must find the love that exists inside you and on-
ly then can you feel loved. Everything around
you is a reflection of you and your feelings that
are vibrating outwards. The reflection you see
cannot change unless you change. Thus, look
for love within you. Do not depend on the ex-
ternal love you or it can be a hurdle towards liv-
ing a happy life.

Jesus really is the greatest teacher of all
time. Listen to what He says about love. His
followers are to love everyonenot just their
friends or people who are like them. This
means loving even our enemies or those who
do not like us.
Jesus knew that what He was asking us to do
would not be easy. But imagine the wonderful
world we would have if everyone tried! Pray
today: Jesus, You taught me how to love.
Help me to be like You.
Think of a neighbor or classmate who is not
your friend. What will you do for him or
her that you would like others to do for
you?
