Dear Scholarship Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in our scholarship! The Upsilon Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, with its mission of service to all mankind, is happy to support graduating high school seniors
pursuing undergraduate education.

Founded January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is the oldest Greek-letter organization
established by black college-educated women. The sorority serves local, national and international
communities through over 170,000 members in more than 900 chapters. In the Kansas City metropolitan
area, Upsilon Rho Omega promotes and supports youth development and leadership and facilitates
families and communities access to crucial resources and services.

Applicants for Upsilon Rho Omegas scholarship must be Kansas City metropolitan area high school
seniors who will attend four-year colleges or universities in the fall semester immediately following
their senior year of high school.

Complete applications include all of the following:

Completed application form

Official school transcript in a sealed envelope
Typed essays answering two of the three question options. The essays must be two pages (using
double spacing, one-inch margins, and size 12 Times New Roman font)
Copy of college acceptance letter
Three references, at least one of which is from an official at the applicants current school
A current photo of the applicant, which may be submitted with the application and/or via email

A postmark no later than Friday, March 17, 2017

Upsilon Rho Omegas scholarship committee will acknowledge all application submissions with a
notice of award or regret in April. Scholarship winners and their families will be invited to an awards
reception to be held on Sunday, April 23, 2017. Winners (or a family representative) must attend
the reception to receive their award. Our chapter will work with winners and their schools to ensure
receipt and proper credit to the students account.

should be at least but no more than 2 pages long and typed with double spacing, 1-inch margins,

1. Imagine you are having dinner with Coretta Scott King and Rosa Parks (all civil rights/social
justice advocates and members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.). What would your
conversation be?
2. Describe a fictional or historical character or a creative work (e.g., art, music, theater or film)
that is meaningful to you and explain its significance to you.

3. Where do you see yourself in five years?

As we were founded by women a generation removed from slavery, preference will be given to
African America females who display characteristics of leadership and meaningful participation
in community service activities and whose essays are grammatically correct without spelling
errors.

Scholarship winners and their families will be invited to an awards luncheon to be held on
Sunday, April 23, 2015. Winners (or a family representative) must attend the luncheon to
receive their award and logistics for fund disbursement.
