(How to memorize long sequential lists)

We need to memorize long portions of scripture.

Corrie Ten Boom

2
STEP 1 of 4 (How to memorize numbers)

The Freedom SMS makes scripture memory easy.

The first step is to memorize numbers as images or characters you might see in a cartoon.

3
Take a look at the chart below, you will notice a number, such as 1 and to the right of
it are the images, as in a baseball bat, or a long sword. We have taken the basic shape of
the number and made it into an image.

Now, it is important to take a few minutes and familiarize yourself with the numbers and
their associated images. You will have this mastered in minutes!

4
So when you think of the number 2 you should visualize in your mind the image of a
funny looking duck or goose, make sure that you can see it clearly! Later on when you
recall a Bible verse, these images will come to mind and you will remember seeing a duck,
which means 2.

Images are very powerful and were used in ancient languages as symbols; the Bible says
that the Heavens declare the glory of God; as with the twelve constellations we know that
the Virgo is the story of the virgin birth of Jesus and the Leo represents the story of the
returning King of Kings as the Lion of the tribe of Judah.
So if God, the maker of our brains, uses images to help us memorize, then we can use
images to memorize scripture!

In this Freedom SMS we will only use (6) Bible verses as our examples to memorize. Once
you have completed this book you will be able to quote six scriptures and their addresses,
discover that it is not impossible to memorize scripture, find that the old way of scripture
memorization; repetition and more repetition is exactly that; old and boring. And with
just a little bit of imagination you will also be able to memorize entire chapters or
important sections of the Bible such as the Beatitudes, or even an entire Book. But we will
show you how to do this later on, for now we are learning the basics of a new memory
system and will keep it to only six verses.

These Bible verses are:

1 John 5:11-12
1 John 1:9
John 16:24
John 5:24

5
1 Corinthians 10:13
Proverbs 3:5-6

You are probably asking, What if the verse number is more than 9, how do we visualize
the higher numbers?

We know that this snake represents the number 5

And the goose represents the number 2

If the goose is holding the snake or doing any type

of action to the snake, then this represents the
number 25

If the snake is holding or eating the goose

(doing the action) then this represents the
Number 52
If two images are connected together by a long
chain or rope or anything similar, then this represents AND as in verse 5 and verse 6.

6
Because of the long chain we know that this is not the number 56
If the tornado was coming out from the snakes mouth then this would be the number
56

Are you ready to try one more?

The answers are:

7
A = 31
B = 13
C = 1 through 3

STEP 2 of 4 (Mind mapping our topics)

In this lesson we have six Bible verses that can come under the heading of ASSURANCE
with a topic for each verse:
The assurance of SALVATION 1 John 5:11-12
The assurance of FORGIVENESS 1 John 1:9
The assurance of ANSWERED PRAYER John 16:24
The assurance of BELIEF John 5:24
The assurance of VICTORY 1 Corinthians 10:13
The assurance of GUIDANCE Proverbs 3:5-6

Our minds need to have a place to go like a map with directional signs, otherwise our
minds get lost in the process of memory recall.
Case in point: How many of you remember the Bible verses that your Pastor used for the
last sermon? Probably not many people can remember. That is because you did not make
a map with your mind and you left no directions for your thoughts to navigate.
Step 2 is the map and compass portion of this lesson, which will guide you to the proper
address of the verse you are trying to remember.

All you need is a little imagination like me! Ready?

Since we have six Bible verses to memorize all we need to do is to locate one room in you
house or office or school; someplace that you are very familiar with the layout. We used

8
a small library for our mapping process, but you can visualize your own room while
following along during this exercise.

Okay, so we now have our room identified for our mind map and we have associated one
verse to one object in this room for our direction signs, now we need to make the topics
into visible images that remind us of the topic being memorized.

So lets get creative

9
See how we have changed these topic words into images that remind us of the topics?

10
In you mind
these
images will
always be at
their
present
location,
remember
to visualize
them in 3-
D as if they
were real!
It may be
helpful for
you to
follow
along with
me as I
explain
how I see
these seven
topics in the
room.
1) First, I
wanted to
memorize
the word
Assurance
so I selected
the Geico Insurance gecko and placed him in the center of the room on the table. So from

11
now on when the word assurance comes up, my mind will know where to go for
assurance; to the library.
2) Next, I wanted to memorize forgiveness so I made this image into a very large 3-D
four and placed it on the chalkboard. I see the large four coming out of the chalkboard
almost like it is melting through the board. So from now on, when I want to recall
Assurance of Forgiveness my mind goes to the library and I remember the large number
four (because of word FOUR giveness) and I am directed to the chalkboard.
3) I selected a cartoon looking tour guide for Guidance and I see him standing on the
bookcase waving his hand at me as he wants to take me for a tour through the books on
the shelf. So when I think of the bookcase in the library I think of the tour guide, which
means, Assurance of Guidance.
4) For assurance of Salvation, I always think of the Salvation Army folks standing at the
doors to the stores, requesting money. So I selected a Salvation Army bell, but I picture it
as being as big as the Liberty bell, just floating next to the door. So naturally, when I want
to remember Assurance of Salvation, my mind goes into the Assurance room (library) and
automatically to the door.
5) My next topic was Victory so immediately I thought of Rocky with his arms raised
up; the iconic scene in Philadelphia. So I see him standing on the counter jumping up and
down in Victory! I can even hear him yelling, Yo! Adrian! Now, when I think of
Assurance of Victory, my mind goes directly into the library and to the counter.
6) The topic of Belief was easy as I immediately thought of a very funny looking larger
than life bumble bee, and I see him with his face smashed up against the window in the
library. So when I try to recall Assurance of Belief (in God) I automatically think of the
bumble bee looking at me through the library window.
7) Finally, Assurance of Answered Prayer. I selected a metal filing cabinet for this one as
I can see the praying hands come out of the filing cabinet, so large that they break-
through the ceiling. Also, the filing cabinet is where we place the records of our answered
prayers from the Lord. So when I remember Assurance of Answered Prayer, my mind
takes me into the library then directly to the filing cabinet where the praying hands are
located.

12
Okay, so once you have visualized our mind mapping technique, just go over it or around
the room a couple of times and you will be hard pressed to forget it!

Now, for those of you who want to memorize the scripture address as well as the verse,
this next section is for you. Step 4 will be the Bible verse memory section. Now you can
visualize numbers and you can organize topics, which is basically the map and the signs
to memory recall, but how do we find the address? What I mean by address is the Book
in the Bible, the Chapter in the Book and the Verse in the Chapter.

STEP 3 of 4 (What is your address?)

To find the address of our six Bible verses we simply use our six topics and divide them
into three parts each. Take one of the images and in your mind you will use the top portion
or top third of the topic for the BOOK section, the middle section will be used for the
CHAPTER and the bottom third of the image will be used for the VERSE.
Allow me to demonstrate:

13
Our first topic is Forgiveness and it is located on the
chalkboard.

Any image that we

Place on the top section
Will be the BOOK only.

Any image that you

See in the middle section
Is for the CHAPTER only

And any image that is

located at the bottom
section is for the VERSE
only.

14
The first area we focus on is the top or BOOK area. For assurance of forgiveness, we know
that the Bible reference (address) is 1 JOHN 1:9. So we need to come up with an image
that reminds us of JOHN, and so we do not get JOHN mixed up with 1 JOHN, we simply
put either a baseball bat, or sword or lightning bolt with our image for JOHN.

I used a picture of a middle eastern dressed man

for my image of JOHN. If JOHN was standing on
top of the 4 by himself, it would be the Book of
John, but since he is holding a lightning bolt in
his hand and lightning is a reference for the
number 1, we know that this is the BOOK of 1st
JOHN.

The CHAPTER is 1 so I used a long sword to

represent 1 This image will go
somewhere in the middle section. NOTE:
Once the image from any section is
visualized, it can then cross other sections
without losing its number.
The VERSE is 9 and I used a balloon
for the bottom section.

Now we have all three sections for the

BOOK, CHAPTER and VERSE, it is time to
put it all together into one image.

15
Your imagination may come up with something like this?
So now when you are thinking of Assurance of Forgiveness your mind should first go to
the library to the main table with the Geico gecko then go directly to the chalkboard
where the large 4 is located, then you know that the topic image is divided up into the

16
three sections so you mind should look at the top of the image and see the little John dude
holding a lightning bolt. You then translate this image to the Bible reference or address,
which is 1 JOHN.
Then you focus on the middle section and you see an arm coming out of the side of the
4 holding a large sword. You can also visualize the little John dude striking the sword
with the lightning bolt and see the electric shock. Now we translate the image so far to
read like this; 1 JOHN CHAPTER 1.
Then your mind will focus on the bottom part of the topic image and imagine that a
balloon comes out of the bottom of the 4 and is attached by a string, the balloon ascends
far up into the sky with everything attached hanging upside down. You know that this is
the VERSE section and the balloon is the number 9.

Therefore to find the address for Assurance of Forgiveness, just scan the image you
created in your mind from top to bottom and you will see the Book of 1 John, Chapter 1,
Verse 9.

Make sure that you see these images in your mind clearly. You are almost making a short
movie clip for each address, so make it an interesting movie!

Lets do the next topic.

17
This tour guide is found on the bookcase and he
wants to show you the right path.

We divide the image

Into three sections

18
For the BOOK of Proverbs I use a bottle of PRO-V shampoo
with a lot of bubbles.

19
So the final image should
look something like this.
When I think of Assurance
of Guidance my mind goes
to the library then to the
bookcase and I see this tour
guide and I scan the top of
his head and see the bottle of
Pro-V shampoo and for us
this means the BOOK of
Proverbs. Then I see that he
is dancing with the M & M
guy through a room full of
bubbles, so I know this is
CHAPTER 3. And from his
feet coming out of the books
on the bookcase I see a
coiled snake and its tongue
is a long chain and at the
end of the chain is tornado
that almost destroys the
library from the fierce
winds.

The Assurance of Guidance

is found in the Book of Proverbs, Chapter 3, verses 5 and 6.

20
Now that you have a good idea on how we find the Bible reference or address, I will show
you the next four addresses.

21
22
23
Now you have all (6) topics and Bible references or addresses.

Remember to review this process in your mind and visualize each of the images vividly
and you will discover that the Freedom SMS scripture memory system is hard to forget,
not hard to remember!

24
STEP 4 of 4 (Verse memorization)

As you study this scripture memory technique you will notice that we use images to
remind us of the words we are trying to memorize. Sometimes the pictures that you will
visualize do not make sense. But do not worry about this; what is important is that your
mind follows a path and you connect one image to the next image until the verse is
finished.

Your mind is an amazing creation; no one is too old or too young to learn. This verse
memory system is comparable to you knowing how to find your kitchen, where your
clothes are, how to find and start your car, how to drive to work or school and then how
you can find your way back home again. You can already tell me verbally how to get
from point A to point B without having to take me there. This system will do the same
thing for you by getting you to the scripture reference and through the entire verse
without having to look it up.

Jesus said in John 15:7 that if we abide in Him and His words abide in you; we can ask
whatever we wish and it will be given to us.
To abide means to make residence in. So let me ask you, how many Bible verses do you
have memorized from the residence of your heart?

So, just like me, lets get started with the verse section!

For each of the topic addresses that we have learned, the verse for each reference or
address starts at the bottom of each topic image in the last verse number used.
So whatever image you used, go inside this image and begin the verse, I will show you in
the following pages.

We have pictured out all (6) verses for you in order to give you a good understanding on
how to memorize verses using funny images connected to one another.

25
In each description you will see words written in red ink, which is my explanation to you
on the meaning of the image and how it relates to the word of God being memorized. The
black ink is the actual Bible verse (NASV). So that you do not get confused I have encircled
numbers on each image to make it easier to follow along.

Remember that the Assurance of

Forgiveness image ended with a balloon, so
we begin inside the balloon.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and

righteous to forgive us our sins and to
cleanse us
from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9

You see Eve and she is playing Wii, so in

your mind you will think of Eve-wii

The last verse (1 John 1:9) you should be able to visualize the images both forward and
backward. Make sure that you can see the entire verse as a short movie in your mind. The
faster you can see the images from one to the next, the better and stronger will be your
memory!

Ready for the next verse?

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not

lean on your own understanding. In all your
ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your
paths straight.

Again, make sure that you can go all the way back to the beginning, so when you think
of Assurance of Guidance, your mind goes to the library, then to the bookcase, then to the
tour guide, then you scan the top portion, the middle and the bottom and can see Proverbs
Chapter 3 Verses 5-6, then go inside the tornado (last image on the topic image) and
begin this verse and see it all the way through like a funny movie!

Now we are ready for the next verse:

And the testimony is this, that God has given

us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who
has the Son has the life; he who does not have
the Son of God does not have the life.

The next verse is:

will not allow you to be tempted beyond what
you are able, but with the temptation will provide
the way of escape also, so that you will be
able to endure it.

5) BONUS MEMORY TECHNIQUES (How to remember a sequential list)

Lets say that you have a project that requires you to remember the outline of the Book of
Revelation (all 22 chapters). Well the Freedom SMS gives you the ability to do this
effectively.

First, find out what you are trying to remember and how many topics you need to cover,
in this case we know that there are 22 chapters in the Book of Revelation.

Second, turn the 22 chapters into images by selecting one subject for each chapter.
Remember to make your images larger than life, funny, and unusual, like a cartoon in 3-
D.

Third, find a location that you are very familiar with like your home, or school or office.

Fourth, begin at the front door of this place and use this as location number 1, or in this
case, Chapter 1, then walk-thru this location and find the best path possible to cover most
of the rooms in this place, without having to retrace your steps. Think of it as if you had
to leave bread crumbs on the floor to find your way back after your journey through your
home!
What we want to do is to place an image at one location, then the next image (chapter 2)
at the second location and so on until we are finished with 22 locations. We have found
it works best if you first follow a path that you will create in your mind and use this same
path every time, then for each room we will divide it up into four sections. So when your
path takes you into the living room, position your body to face the north wall, this will be
the first location for this room, then look east, this is the second location, then south for
the third and finally west for the fourth location for this room. In this way you can use
one room in your house to remember at least four items or chapters!

58
Fifth, for each of your 22 locations you need to find one particular item on or near the
wall for your association. Lets say that you are in the living room and you face the north
wall and you see a large clock on the wall. This will be your item for this location. You
see, your mind will now have a path to take as you travel through your house (mind
mapping), but your mind needs to have one thing at each location to attach to and to
trigger your memory, so use things that you know are there in your house every day.
Then you face the east wall and see a large sofa. Use this sofa at this second location in
the living room for your next chapter, or item to be remembered.
Try to keep each room in the same pattern, north, east, south and west, or whatever you
choose, but do it the same throughout your entire path.

Sixth, now go back to the beginning, usually your front door, and bring with you the
image that you have selected for the first chapter, lets say it is an image of Jesus Christ,
with a long white robe and His face is glowing. In your mind, place Jesus at your front
door. When you go back and try to recall what you have memorized, you will start at the
first location, see the first object associated with this location, in this case it is the front
door, and your mind will visualize Jesus standing there automatically and you will know
that chapter 1 is the Revelation of Jesus Christ. Then go to the second location and
continue this process until all locations are completed.
Remember to visualize your images clearly. Some people make a mistake here and they
do not try to visualize the images, they say, okay, Jesus is standing at the front door and
they do not see it clearly and move on to the next location. This mistake will cause you to
forget what you are trying to remember and is no better than the old memory system of
repeating words or numbers over and over again.

We have made a diagram of this (Memorizing sequential lists) technique for you so that
you may better understand what we are saying.

59
Turning our 22 chapters into images:
