Statistical Test: Parametric Test Pearson Correlation Coefficient

Explain what the statistical test is all about:

Pearson Correlation Coefficient is a type of parametric test that measures the

degree and direction of linear relationship between normally distributed variables.

Why is this the most appropriate statistical test?

Pearson Correlation Coefficient is the most appropriate statistical test to be used

because the main goal of the research is to determine the relationship between
internalized stigma and self-concept clarity. Through the use of this statistical
test, the correlation between the variables whether they have a positive or
negative relationship will be determined.

Summary of Research: Throughout the years, due to induced prejudice and

stigmatization from the society, the transgenders were viewed as self-stigmatized
individuals who are susceptible to mental health problems. Moreover, it could also affect
their self-concept clarity which is concerned with how consistent and non-contradicting a
person's self knowledge is. To further understand the current situation of Filipino
transgenders, the proponents of this study aimed to identify the presence of internalized
stigma (internalized transphobia and self-stigma) and its relationship to self-concept
clarity among Filipino transgenders. In knowing the relationship between the two
variables, a correlational designed was used. Subsequently, regression analysis was
utilized to determine if the scores of self-concept clarity can be predicted by scores on
the measure of internalized transphobia and self- stigma. Also, a convenience sampling
was used in obtaining adult self-identified transgender participants. After collecting data
and computing for Pearson correlation coefficient, they have found out that as the
scores on internalized transphobia scale and self-stigma scale decrease, self-concept
clarity scores increase. The result in simple regression analysis indicated that
internalized transphobia predicted self-concept clarity. To conclude, as the scores on
internalized transphobia scale and self-stigma scale decrease, self-concept clarity
scores would increase. This indicates that as transgenders accept the negative notion
about themselves and their minority group, inconsistency and uncertainty about self
concept becomes apparent. The researchers have also predicted that the combination
of the two predictor variables would be stronger than either one alone. However, the
self-stigma was clearly better of the two predictors.

If you were asked to replicate the research and change something in the research what
changes will you do?
If we were to replicate the research, we would change the kind of sampling used.
Instead of using convenience sampling, we would use stratified sampling in order
to get more samples that represent different subgroups (transgenders in various
provinces, may it be from Luzon, Visayas or Mindanao).
