Project 5: Expressive Animals

Suggested Theme: Expression

In this project, you will apply your knowledge of color theory, value, acrylic
painting techniques, and expressionism to create a painting of a animal that
exemplifies:
Use of Color to Show an Expression
Analogous Color Scheme (or Other Color Scheme of Your Choice)
Strong Range of Values Using White, Black, and Tones
Contrast to Emphasize an Area of the Animal (Face, Eyes, Ect.)
Painting Style and Technique
Craftsmanship

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Choose and Print a Picture of an Animal
Print a 9x6 black and white photo. Hint: Use Microsoft Word to properly size your photo as demonstrated in
class. Keep in mind the Expressionism Movement which is explained as, ...a modernist movement, initially in
poetry and painting, originating in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. Its typical trait is to present
the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke
moods or ideas. Choose a photo the could be used to show an expression or evoke a mood.

Step 2: Create Your Grids

9x6 Black and White Photo: Divide into 1 squares.
9x6 Painting Paper: Divide into 1 squares.

Step 3: Transfer Your Image

Lightly create a contour line sketch of your image onto your painting paper using the grid to replicate your black
and white image.

Step 4: Choose a Color Scheme

Analogous: Uses three colors next to each other on the color wheel with black and white.
Other Choices are as Follows:
Complementary: Uses two hues opposite on the color wheel with black and white.
Monochromatic: Uses hue with black, white and its tone (complement).
Split-Complementary: Similar to complementary, but uses the two hues adjacent to its complement.
Triadic: Uses colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel with black and white.

Step 5: Begin Painting

First create your underpainting using a neutral color. Then, paint in local colors. This is your first layer. As you
add more layers on this base color, you will add more detail. Since we are painting expressively, you are free
to create textures using a range of brushes and quick, expressive brush strokes. Note: I will demonstrate each
acrylic painting step in class.

Step 6:Turn-In Your Project

Turn-in your project on the appropriate due date by submitting the link to your digital portfolio in the proper unit
folder on Schoology. You should have included a clear picture and artist statement in your slides.
