surveillanceandothervideocaptureproblems.PoEenablesdataandpowertobesentto
andfromthecamerawithasingleethernetcable.Thisapplicationnotewillshowhowto
correctlyconfigureanIPcameraforlocalnetworkaccess

Objective
ThisapplicationnotewillshowhowtocorrectlyconfigureanAxisP1355EPoEIPcamera
foraccesstothelivefeedfrombothalocalIPAddressusingtheroutercontrolinterface
andPortForwarding.

Introduction
AxisCommunicationsABisaSwedishmanufacturerofnetworkcamerasforthephysical
securityandvideosurveillanceindustries.TheirIPcameracanbesetuptoestablisha
livefeedontolocalnetworkaddressandthenaccessforvariouspurposes.This
applicationnotewillspecificallydescribethenecessarysteps,includingbothhardware
andsoftware,toconfigurethesedevicescorrectlyfornetworkaccess.

Hardware
TheoutdoorreadyAXISP1355ENetworkCameraisafixeddayandnightcamera,
deliveringexcellent,lightsensitiveperformanceinarobustdesign.InadditiontotheAxis
camera,anetworkrouterisalsorequired.Therearehundredsofdifferentbrandsof
routers.ForsimplicitythisapplicationnotewillbeusingaNETGEARN150router.

Note:Anynetworkroutercanbeused,howevercertaindiscrepanciesinthedefault
gatewayprotocolwillhavetobeacknowledgedandaccountedfor.


Cameradimensions

RouterInterface

 RouterConfiguration
Thefirststepinconfiguringthehardwareistoconnectthepowercableintotherouter.
Lightsonthefrontoftherouterwillbegintoflash.AethernetcablefromanInternet
ModemDevicemustbepluggedintotheWANportoftherouterifpublicaccessiswished.
TheWANor(WideAreaNetwork)portanetworkthatcoversabroadarea(i.e.,any
telecommunicationsnetworkthatlinksacrossmetropolitan,regional,nationalor
internationalboundaries)usingleasedtelecommunicationlines.Theroutertakesthis
networkandbranchesaccesstoit,thusallowingotherdevicestoaccesstheinternet.
Afterabout30seconds,therouterisautomaticallyconfiguredbasedonitsinstalled
firmwareandthenbeginstolookfordevices.

CameraConfiguration
TheAxiscameraneedstobeoneofthedevicesthattherouterfindsinordertocorrectly
configurenetworkaccesstothelivestream.Interfacingthecameratotherouterisdone
byinsertinganEthernetCableintooneoftheportsonthebackofthedevice.Theother
endofthatcableistheninsertedintothecameraitself.SincethecameraisPoE,this
singlecableprovidesdatatransfercapabilitiesandalsoapowersignaltorunthedevice.

ComputerConfiguration
Acomputerisneededtoconfigurethecameraandroutercorrectly.Connectacomputer
tothelocalnetworkoftheroutereitherbyWiFiorbyanadditionalethernetcable
connectiontotherouter.

Software
Oncetherouterandcameraarecorrectlypluggedinandpoweredon,hardwaresetupis
complete.Softwaremanipulationfromthenetworkedlaptopisthenextstep.

DHCP
TheDynamicHostConfigurationProtocol(DHCP)isastandardizednetworkprotocolused
onInternetProtocol(IP)networksfordynamicallydistributingnetworkconfiguration
parameters,suchasIPaddressesforinterfacesandservices.WithDHCP,computers(or
cameras)requestIPaddressesandnetworkingparametersautomaticallyfromaDHCP
server,reducingtheneedforanetworkadministratororausertoconfigurethesesettings
manually.



IPAddressDiscovery
Thecameraandlaptopconnectedtotherouterhavebeenautomaticallyassignedtoa
localIPAddressusingtheDHCP.Aspreviouslymentioned,differentbrandofrouterswill
havedifferentdefaultaddresssetupprotocolswhichwillresultindifferentlyformatted
address.Thisisnotaproblem,justavariationthesetuproutine.TofindoutwhatIP
Addressthelaptophasbeenassignedtoisasimpletask.OnaWindowsOScomputer,
openupthecommandpromptbyclickingtheStartbuttoninthebottomleftofthe
Desktop.ThentypecmdandpressEnter.Ablackterminalwindowwillopenup.Type
ipconfigandpressEnter.ThecurrentWindowsIPConfigurationwillbedisplayedin
thecommandwindow.Thepicturebelowillustratesthisprocess.

TheIPv4AddressistheIPAddressassignedtothecomputer.TheDefaultGatewayis
theIPAddresswhereaccesstotheroutersoftwareconfigurationpage.Openingupan
Internetbrowserandtypingthataddressintothebrowserbaristhenextstep.

Fromabrowseronthedesktopcomputer,accesstheNETGEARGenieWebinterface
(http://routerlogin.com)orbytypingintheDefaultGateway.Defaultlogindetailsona

FindtheIPaddressoftheIPcamera
ClickontheBASICtabandclickonAttachedDevices:

TheDevicenameoftheCamerawillshowupinthe2ndcolumn.ThecorrespondingIP
Addressinthesamerow,butonecolumntotheleftwillbetheIPAddressofthe
Camera.Simplytypetheaddressfoundintothebrowserbarofanycomputer
connectedtotheroutersnetworkandthelivestreampagewillbedisplayed.Learningthe
IPaddressthattherouterhasautomaticallyconfiguredfortheIPcameraistheonly
requiredsteptoaccessingthelivefeedonthelocalnetwork.













Recommendations
ItisrecommendedthatastaticIPAddressbeconfiguredinsideoftheAxisLiveView
configurationpage.DHCPisconvenienttoinitiallydeterminewhichaddresstoassign
thecameratoinordertogainaccesstotheliveview/configurationpagesforthefirst
time.However,everytimethecameraispluggedintothecamera,withDHCPenabled
thereisachancethatadifferentIPaddressmaybeassigned,potentiallycausing
confusion.Eliminatethisprobleminthefollowingways.

ChoosingaStaticIPAddress
ClickingSetupinthetoprightcorneroftheLiveViewPagewillbringyoutothe
configurationpagefortheAxisCamera.

 ByDefault,inthepictureabove,ObtainIPaddressviaDHCPisselected.Simply
selectUsethefollowingIPaddress:andtypeintheIPAddressofthecamera
previouslyfoundintheAttachedDevicespageoftherouter.FortheSubnetmask:and
Defaultrouter:options,typeintheinformationfromthecommandpromptwindowfrom
earlier.

Conclusions
ThisapplicationnotedemonstrateshowtoconfigureanAxisCameraforlocalnetwork
accessonaNETGEARrouter.Thestepsabovewillsuccessfullyestablishaccesstothe
livestreamfeedofanAxisCamerabytypingintheassignedIPAddressofthecamera
intothebrowserbarofanylocalcomputerthatisconnectedtotherouterbyeither
ethernetorWiFi.Byusingthistechnique,theusercansavetimeandfrustrationby
followingconciseinstructionsonhowtoconfiguretheAxisP1355EPoEIPCamera.
