Text from

Friday, the 16th [of March], a fair warm day; we were concluding our military orders, when we
were interrupted by the savages, as we mentioned formerly. And whilst we were busied
hereabout, there presented himself a savage, which caused an alarm. He very boldly came all
alone and along the houses straight towards us where we intercepted him. He saluted us in
English, and welcomed, for he had learned some broken English among the Englishmen that came
to fish at Monchiggon, and knew by name the most of the captains, commanders, and masters
that usually came. He was a man free in speech, so far as he could express his mind, and appeared
handsome and healthy. We questioned him of many things; he was the first savage we could meet
withal..The wind being to rise a little, we put a coat on him, for he was naked, only a leather
about his waist; he had a bow and two arrows. He was a tall straight man, the hair of his head
black, long behind, only short before, none on his face at all. He asked for some beer, but we gave
him strong water and biscuit, and butter, and cheese, and pudding, and a piece of mallard, all
which he liked well, and was familiar with, having been among the English before. He told us the
place where we now live is called Patuxet, and that about four years ago all the inhabitants died
of an extraordinary plague, and there is neither man, woman, nor child remaining, as indeed we
have found none, so as there is none to hinder our possession, or to lay claim unto it.

Saturday and Sunday, reasonable fair days. On this day came again the savage, and brought with
him five other tall proper men. They had every man a deer's skin on him, and the chief of them
had a wild cat's skin. They had most of them [a type of long pants on them], they were altogether
like the Irish-trousers. They left their bows and arrows a quarter of a mile from our town, as we
had requested. We gave them entertainment as we thought they would like; they did eat of our
English food. They showed unto us of friendship ; they sang and danced after their manner, like
antics. They brought with them in a thing like a bow-case a little of their corn pounded to powder,
which, put to a little water, they eat. The chief also had a little tobacco in a bag.

On Friday, March 16th, we were concluding our military practice when we interrupted by the
savages. In walked one savage. He caused alarm among us. He came alone and walked straight
through our settlement. He greeted us in English. He had learned a little English from English
fishermen who come to fish in this place. He knew by name most of the captains and commanders
of the ships that usually came. He could express himself well and appeared to be strong and
healthy. He was the first savage we met in person. We put a coat on him, for he was naked. He
only had a leather around his waist. He had a bow and two arrows. He was tall with long, black

He told us that the place where we settled is called Patuxet. He told us that four years ago, all of
the Native people of Patuxet had died of a plague. Therefore there is no [Native]person who can
claim this land for their own.

On Saturday and Sunday the savage returned and brought with him five other tall me. They wore
deer skin and had on a type of leather pants. They left their bows and arrows outside of our
village, as we had requested. We entertained them and gave them more of our food. They
showed that they wanted friendship with us. They sang and danced, in their manner, for us.
