There are 9 stars in a bucket, 3 are blue stars, 3 are yellow stars, and 3 are pink stars. If we draw one star at a time what are the probabilities of
obtaining a variety of combinations of stars? List the outcomes.
First list the probability without replacement of the stars after each draw; then, find the probability if you replace the stars after each draw.
At the Kindergarten level this type of problem will have to be approached as a hands-on activity, utilizing visuals. As a teacher, I would use the
fractions just to expose my students to this type of problem but I know they will not be ready to solve this on their own yet.
Possibility of an event without replacement is a dependent event. Possibility of an event with replacement is an independent event.
The first draw will affect the outcome of the second draw and so on. The first draw will not affect the outcome of the other draws.
