Single Kernel Moisture Tester-Safety Precautions
Not following these safety precautions could result in injury, bodily harm, or even death.
Furthermore, this unit has moving parts that could potentially cause injury.
Closely follow the safety regulations for this unit.
Please make sure to read the safety procedures in this manual.
Danger This symbol indicates that there is a risk of sustaining serious injury of even death if the warning is ignored.
Warning This symbol indicates that there is a chance of sustaining injury or bodily harm if the warning is ignored.
This symbol indicates that the following information should be read and understood in order to use the unit
Note
safely and properly.
Fire Electonic Shock Hurt Prohibited No disassembly Dont wash Requirement Unplug Cord Connect Ground
Danger
Do not use any voltage outside of the fixed and recommended voltage. Using excessive voltage can cause various
problems with the unit and even cause a fire.
Make sure to connect the grounding part of the power cable.
When the power plug is a two-prong, make sure to ground the unit with the colored line that sticks out of the adaptor.
For the three-pronged plugs, the grounding is done automatically.
If the unit is not grounded properly, the risk of shock is greatly increased.
When using a high-capacity fuse for fuse replacement, make sure to unplug the unit from the plug.
Using a fuse that is stronger than the recommended fuse can cause a fire.
Please do not try to take apart or remodel the unit.
This can cause the user to be electronically shocked or sustain injury and cause the unit to malfunction.
Please do not try to wash the unit.
This unit is not waterproof.
If water enters the unit, it increases the risk of electrical shock or machine malfunction.
Warning
When unplugging the power plug and power cable, make sure to unplug the connector and plug without pulling or
yanking on the cord.
When not using the unit or when there is a fear of power outage, put the power switch into the [OFF] position and
unplug the power cord from the wall.
In the even that you detect a foul smell, smoke, or any other strange occurrence, immediately put the power switch
into the [OFF] position, disconnect the power cord from the wall, and take any other appropriate measures.
Do not press the power switch while pressing the function key.
Please do not press multiple keys or keys besides the required key at the same time.

4. Preparing for Measurement
4-1. Powering Up
1. Connect the power cord.
2. Put the power switch in the [ON] position.
The buzzer will sound, the internal moving screw will rotate, and the shutters will
open and close as the unit removes any remaining sample from the last time the
unit was used.
The function panel will move through the following sequence.
2. Press the key of the type of grain you would like to measure.
The indicator light of the grain you select will flash
(In this example, polished rice (#1) has been selected.)
Warning : In the case that the wrong grain type has been selected in step 2, please return to step one
and repeat the steps to input the correct type.
5
4-3. Setting the number of grains to be measured
Press the key and set the number of grains to be measured from any
Warning 2 : When making a change in the midst of setting the number of grains, press any of the keys
from to until you reach 4 digits. At this point, press one more number key and
you will be returned to step 1, at which point you can retype the numbers.
Warning 3 : The number of grains that can be set is limited to the range from 10-1000 grains. Inputting
anything outside of this range will cause the unit to return to step 1.
6
5. Measurement
1. When you press the Start/Stop switch located on the left side of the top of the
Unit, measurement will begin and the display screen will show the following:
Measurement initiation
2. When the measurement is complete, the average moisture and the histogram
will be displayed. The histogram, using 21 separate LED lights, will display the
moisture anywhere in a range from 10-30% and display a segment of a range of
colors (covering the spectrum from clear to green to orange to red) depending
on how high the frequency is.
3. Any remaining sample will be automatically discharged, and after the motor
has stopped, a buzzer will sound.
4. After the buzzer rings, press the Start/Stop switch. The moisture display will
be replaced with the grain number setting display, and you will be able to move
on to the next measurement.
Warning 1 : Even if the printer is still printing, as long as the motor has stopped, you can begin the next
measurement.
Warning 2 : If you would like to stop measuring during the middle of a measurement, simply press the
Start/Stop switch, and the average moisture and histogram for the grains measured up until
that point will be displayed.
Warning 3 : The Start/Stop switch on the control panel may be used in place of the normal switch
if necessary.

6. Additional Warnings
6-1. How to clean the moving, internal parts
Allowing sample to remain on moving, internal parts can do damage to the unit. In order to
avoid this, periodically clean the inside of the unit by first putting the power switch into the
(Warning) [OFF] position, unplugging the power cord, and then following the procedures listed below.
Be careful not be hurt your finger in case of reassembly or assembly of the instrument as
some of inside parts are sharp.

6-2. Temperature Correction
A temperature sensor has been installed in the unit and automatically corrects
the temperature for measurement purposes. However, when the difference
between the temperature of the grain and the temperature of the machine is too
great, the error between the real moisture value and reported value can become
very large.
Therefore, in order to get an accurate measurement, make sure that the temperatures of the
grain and machine are reasonably close before measuring.

7. Printing
An optional printer (VZ-300) is available for this unit. When hooked up to the
main unit, this printer is capable of printing out the results of the measurements
performed by the PQ-510. The following is an explanation of what to do after
connecting the printer. For a more general explanation of how to use the printer,
refer to pages 15-20.
10
7-3. How to set the time
When you set the time, the printer will correctly print the date of the measurement
according to the internal clock. At the time of shipment, the time on the PQ-510
was pre-set; however, in the case that the time displayed is incorrect, please
use the following method to set it to the appropriate time.
1. The time can be set on the pre-measurement screen (ie the screen where the
number of grains to be measured is displayed).
2. To set the time, follow the process described below, starting with pressing the
key.
Function Key Number Value Display Screen
100 Pre-measurement Screen
(set to 100 grains in this example)
0000 Enter the year (1000s column)
Bold text represent the digits that will be flashing at that point.
3. If you press the key when in pre-measurement mode, the time will be
displayed on the number value display screen.
Warning 1 : If you press the key a second time, you will be returned to the pre-measurement
screen.
Warning 2 : The time display function can not be used during measurement, and when displaying the
time, no other functions can be used.

Warning : A display of [----] appearing under the moisture data table represent a measurement error
caused by dirt or rock. This error is automatically deleted from the histogram and statistical
calculations.
