4. Preparing for Measurement

4-1. Powering Up
1. Connect the power cord.
2. Put the power switch in the [ON] position.
The buzzer will sound, the internal moving screw will rotate, and the shutters will
open and close as the unit removes any remaining sample from the last time the
unit was used.
The function panel will move through the following sequence.

4-2. Selecting a measurement sample

1. Press the [Grain Type Selection] key.
Six different grain indicator lights will light up, and you will be prompted to
select one.

2. Press the key of the type of grain you would like to measure.
The indicator light of the grain you select will flash
(In this example, polished rice (#1) has been selected.)

Warning : In the case that the wrong grain type has been selected in step 2, please return to step one
and repeat the steps to input the correct type.

5
4-3. Setting the number of grains to be measured

Press the key and set the number of grains to be measured from any

number from 10-1000 grains.

Example : Changing the number from 100 grains to 234 grains

Step Function Key Value Display

Current Measurement Setting (not flashing)

1 Press the key (flashing)

2 Press the key (flashing)

3 Press the key (flashing)

4 Press the key (flashing)

5 Press the key (not flashing)

At this point, the grain number setting is complete.

Warning 1 : The unit has been factory-preset to 100 grains.

Warning 2 : When making a change in the midst of setting the number of grains, press any of the keys

from to until you reach 4 digits. At this point, press one more number key and

you will be returned to step 1, at which point you can retype the numbers.

Warning 3 : The number of grains that can be set is limited to the range from 10-1000 grains. Inputting
anything outside of this range will cause the unit to return to step 1.

6
5. Measurement

1. When you press the Start/Stop switch located on the left side of the top of the
Unit, measurement will begin and the display screen will show the following:

Screen prior to measurement

Measurement initiation

Measurement complete (100 grains)

2. When the measurement is complete, the average moisture and the histogram
will be displayed. The histogram, using 21 separate LED lights, will display the
moisture anywhere in a range from 10-30% and display a segment of a range of
colors (covering the spectrum from clear to green to orange to red) depending
on how high the frequency is.
3. Any remaining sample will be automatically discharged, and after the motor
has stopped, a buzzer will sound.
4. After the buzzer rings, press the Start/Stop switch. The moisture display will
be replaced with the grain number setting display, and you will be able to move
on to the next measurement.

Warning 1 : Even if the printer is still printing, as long as the motor has stopped, you can begin the next
measurement.
Warning 2 : If you would like to stop measuring during the middle of a measurement, simply press the
Start/Stop switch, and the average moisture and histogram for the grains measured up until
that point will be displayed.

Warning 3 : The Start/Stop switch on the control panel may be used in place of the normal switch

if necessary.

7
6. Additional Warnings
6-1. How to clean the moving, internal parts
Allowing sample to remain on moving, internal parts can do damage to the unit. In order to
avoid this, periodically clean the inside of the unit by first putting the power switch into the
(Warning) [OFF] position, unplugging the power cord, and then following the procedures listed below.
Be careful not be hurt your finger in case of reassembly or assembly of the instrument as
some of inside parts are sharp.
(Hurt)

1. Remove the panel on the left side of

the unit.
If you press the button located at
both the top and bottom of the panel,
you should be able to remove it
easily.

2. Lifting the front of the panel (shown in

the picture) up slightly, pull it
towards you, removing it from the unit.

3. At this point, you should be able to see

the moving, internal parts of the unit.
Please remove any residual sample or dirt
and clean this area.

4. When you are finished cleaning, follow the

instructions in step 1 and 2 in reverse
order to replace the panels and restore
the unit to its original state.

8
6-2. Temperature Correction
A temperature sensor has been installed in the unit and automatically corrects
the temperature for measurement purposes. However, when the difference
between the temperature of the grain and the temperature of the machine is too
great, the error between the real moisture value and reported value can become
very large.

Therefore, in order to get an accurate measurement, make sure that the temperatures of the
grain and machine are reasonably close before measuring.
(Warning)

6-3. The Sample Case

Please do not fill the sample case to its maximum level. If you continue to measure
with an extremely full sample case, it will produce a large error in the
(Warning)
measurement value and even possibly damage the unit itself.

9
7. Printing
An optional printer (VZ-300) is available for this unit. When hooked up to the
main unit, this printer is capable of printing out the results of the measurements
performed by the PQ-510. The following is an explanation of what to do after
connecting the printer. For a more general explanation of how to use the printer,
refer to pages 15-20.

7-1. The different print modes

Print Mode Print Content

0 No print-out
1 Date, Grain Type, Time, # of Grains, Avg. Moisture, Standard Dev., Temp.
2 All of the contents of print mode 1 plus a Histogram
3 All of the contents of print mode 2 plus Overall Moisture Data Results
Warning 1 : The printer is factory pre-set to print-mode 0 (no print-out).
Warning 2 : Regardless of the print mode, if you have completed a measurement and only measured 9 or
fewer grains, the average moisture will be displayed and nothing printed.
Warning 3 : In print-mode 1, as long as the grain type is not changed and power not unplugged, the
printer will print the time, grain number, average moisture, standard deviation, and temperature
of the measurements in a series.

7-2. How to set the print mode

1. The print mode can be set while the main unit is in the pre-measurement mode
(ie the screen where the set grain # screen is displayed).
2. At the set grain # screen, press the key.
After the number indicator lights from 0-3 light up, press the key again.
This will cause the system to circulate through the various print modes (1-2-3-0-
1)
3. When the unit has reached your desired mode, press the key. At this
point, the print mode will be set and the PQ-510 will move to the pre-measurement
screen.
There are 4 different print modes, so please select the note that best suits your
needs.

10
7-3. How to set the time
When you set the time, the printer will correctly print the date of the measurement
according to the internal clock. At the time of shipment, the time on the PQ-510
was pre-set; however, in the case that the time displayed is incorrect, please
use the following method to set it to the appropriate time.

1. The time can be set on the pre-measurement screen (ie the screen where the
number of grains to be measured is displayed).
2. To set the time, follow the process described below, starting with pressing the
key.

3. If you press the key when in pre-measurement mode, the time will be
displayed on the number value display screen.

Warning 1 : If you press the key a second time, you will be returned to the pre-measurement
screen.
