1
INTRODUCTION

The perception of Beauty is an even-changing concept with respect to time and place. Beauty
is a relative term and depends upon the conceptualization of a specific society as a specific
group of people. In different societies and culture over time the way of to be beautiful and/ or
to look beautiful is different. Interestingly, with the shift of time men are becoming more
beauty conscious, which typically was womens concern (Mishkind et al. 1986). The
perception of men regarding beauty is changing and Bangladesh is not out of it. At the
present time, Bangladeshi men are being involved in activities which help them to cherish
their own beauty and style.

A couple of decades, the people of Bangladesh were totally unaware of the concept of
beautification and makeovers. That time people used to use a little range of local beauty
products for personal hygiene like soap, shaving cream, hair oil and after shave lotion, etc. As
the wave of globalization hit, men of Bangladesh are introduced to various beauty products
and style which are unhanded in the past. In the past, commercial beauty care centers or
beauty parlors were only meant for women and men were totally secluded from this arena.
Steadily over the last decade, a number of mens grooming parlors and specialized beauty
parlors have entered the commercial scenario. The changing trend of mens beauty is
consciousness gradually spreading in the male population all over the country. This has
created a total beauty boom among the young men in Bangladesh.

In the context of Bangladesh, the ratio of the beauty conscious men is increasing day by day.
In the recent times a huge number of men are going to mens beauty centers like Persona
Adams, Habibs & Alviras, Hairobics etc, to name a few. These parlors as salons are
profiting a lot which is unimaginable. It is usually visible that the young people are the ones
who generally go to these parlors but there is no specific statistical data. Young people can be
divided into two broad groups who generally visit these parlors. One who are university
students and others are young professionals. This beauty trend is incorporated to the extent in
our culture that young male university student do not consider this as posh behavior, rather
they believe it is a necessary need in todays world in order to keep pace with the fashionable
celebrities. The cost of these commercially available beauty products is now becoming in the
reach of middle class people also. However, Men are becoming more conscious like
women to maintain their beauty.

2
OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

Beauty is one of the natural instincts of human beings in every spheres of life as they try to
achieve it for personal beautification. From my research, I expect to find that, the perception
of male beautification is changing positively among young university students & young
professionals. The influences of these changes can be culture, fashion & globalization. Thing
which I expect to get from my research is young people of Bangladesh are getting more
beauty conscious day by day. As I precede my research I expect to find that the male
beautification is also becoming popular in our country as liked others developed or
developing countries. And finally at the end of my research I expect to get that this is an
essentially part of young peoples daily life.

PARTICIPANT PROFILE

The participants I surveyed are 30 people. My target audiences can be divided into two broad
groups, one is Male and another is Female. I tried to focus on basically people who are
already beauty conscious. Equal importance was given to both gender regard this topic to
come up with accurate answers.

AREAS OF RESEARCH

The area of the research is the male and female students of North South University answering
the idea about beauty consciousness, style statement, perception about the concept and many
more. I wanted to know about the following information through this area of research and
they are listed below:

Are there differences in mens and womens view?

If there are any differences, Why?
What are the concepts of male beauty?
How has the concept of beautification among men changed over time?

3
Hypothesis
The Preconceived idea that only women can be aware regarding their beauty. The Latest
situation shows that men are also getting very aware about their beauty and appearance. But I
expect that professionals to agree that they are conscious about their views about
beautification.
The major result I expect from my primary research is to find that the perception of male
beautification is changing positively among young university students and young
professionals. At the end of my research, I am expected to get that beautification is an
essential part of young peoples daily life.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The methodology I have used in this research can be basically divided into two parts, primary
data collection and secondary data collection. The two methodologies will be shortly
discussed below.

Primary data collection

I prepared a survey questionnaire for the area of my research in order to get my primary
research to be completed. The questionnaire included a total of 10 questions which were
answered by my target audience. A sample of 30 male and female students participated on
the survey approximately. The primary data are presented through pie-charts in percentage.

SUGGESTIONS

This research has been done to check the popularity of male beautification among men and
women. After doing the entire research I have seen that. Some of the respondents also
thought that if they follow Hollywood or Bollywood style statement for maintain
beautification, culture or tradition will be hampered. But based on survey result I can suggest
that, one can maintain beautification with his own style statement without following
Hollywood or Bollywood. As it is not a popular practice in our country, Ill suggest that
people who still are not conscious about male beautification should change their perception
according to the concept of male beautification. Because according to Plato, The three
wishes of every man: to be healthy, to be rich by honest means, and to be beautiful.

15
CONCLUSION

Men are becoming beauty conscious on a large scale in recent times. New beauty parlors and
products are coming in markets which are made especially for men. The process which was
seen as feminine long ago now suddenly is involving in to it. Beauty industry is introducing a
new segment which is absolutely for men. These happenings imply that men are now
interested to take beauty care and traditional construct or masculinity is shifting from its
stand. This study presents some qualitative as well as quantitative facts that prove that the
men and women of Bangladesh to some extent is thinking out of the box in terms of beauty
care. Though the respondents analysis it is clearly understood that their view regarding male
beautification is very important in order to keep track of the latest fashion in their fingertips.
It has showed that the cultural environment and health magazine have influenced the
changing social perspective of men which has convinced them to enhance their look by using
various cosmetic products. Their beauty consciousness also plays an important role for
maintain own style statement rather than following celebrities. The fashion magazine
provides them with beauty tips and latest style which can be easily achieved at home. This
trend can be expensive for men but the reward maybe worth it. It affects mens self-esteem as
taking care of their looks makes them self-conscious. In todays highly competitive world,
careful grooming and concern about fashion helps a man to become successful at work as he
gets motivated. The reposition of male beauty has occurred in a global scale. According to
me, there is nothing wrong with this trend as long as it does not involve nudity or obscene
behavior.
