INTRODUCTION

Homemade small chiller is an evaporative cooling refrigeration device which does not use
electricity. It uses a porous outer earthenware pot, lined with wet sand, contains an inner pot
(which can be glazed to prevent penetration by the liquid) within which the food is placed - the
evaporation of the outer liquid draws heat from the inner pot. The device can be used to cool any
substance. This simple technology requires only a flow of relatively dry air and a source of
water.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

1. Commercial chiller are expensive, thus all people cannot afford it.
2. They give out CFCs (Chloro-Fluoro Carbons) which result in ozone layer depletion.
3. Consume a lot of electricity and voltage, electricity consumption in turn causes global
warming
4. In case of power cut off, the food may get spoilt due to temperature changes.
5. Hard to maintain if quality is bad then it will easily break down and cost even more to
repair.
6. High transportation cost and take up a lot of space.
METHODS/MATERIALS

Homemade chiller is constructed by placing a clay pot within a larger clay pot with wet sand in
between the pots, a wet cloth, a cooler lid on top and a fan (optional). The device cools as the
water evaporates, allowing refrigeration in hot, dry climate. It must be placed in a dry, ventilated
space for the water to evaporate effectively towards the outside. Evaporative coolers tend to
perform poorly or not at all in climates with high ambient humidity, since the water is not able to
evaporate well under these conditions.

If there is an impermeable separation layer between the food and the porous pots, undrinkable
water such as seawater can be used to drive the cooling process, without contaminating the food.
This is useful in arid locations near the ocean where drinkable water is a limited commodity, and
can be accomplished by using a pot that has waterproof glaze or cement applied to the inner wall
where the food is stored.

The cooler lid functions further to decrease the air temperature that enters into the chiller and
also with the help of the fan.Extended operation is possible if the pots are able to draw water
from a storage container, such as an inverted airtight jar, or if the pots are placed in a shallow
pool of water. A strap can be used to tie the inner pot down instead of using sand to prevent it
from floating.
DESIGN
PRODUCT ANALYSIS
The effectiveness of evaporative cooling varies with the temperature, humidity and airflow.
Given a constant flow of cool dry air the inner pot can achieve temperatures as low as 40 F
(4.4 C), which is the temperature below which mesophilic ("middle temperature") bacteria such
as food spoilage bacteria have significantly slowed growth.

The chiller has had multiple positive impacts on the population that uses them beyond the simple
ability to keep food fresh for longer periods of time and decreasing instances of food-related
disease. Its also envoromentally friendly product that dont use electricity, practicable and easy to
be done by anyone at home and do not release harmful gases to the environment that effects the
ozone layer of the earth.

COSTING/BUDGET EVALUATION
The cost to produce the homemade chiller is very low where we just need to buy the 2 different
size pot made from clay where it will cost less than RM20 and the rest materials can be obtain
from our surrounding and not necessary to buy the items for example water, sand and wet cloth
while for the cooler lid that cover the chiller it can be made by using recycle materials such
plastic bottles and cardboard. While the fan which is optional can be about RM 5 to 10 or obtain
from the home/surrounding. The total cost will be less than RM 30 which is very affordable for a
product like chiller.
