Theatre Spijkenisse
Multi-disciplinary theatre design

This document presents the multi-

disciplinary design of a new theatre
in Spijkenisse by means of inter-
actively taking the viewer through
a 3D visualisation model.

The UNStudio-designed landmark

theatre features a grand theatre hall
and a small theatre/concert hall with
a capacity of resp. 650 and 200 seats.
The entrance and lobby connect seam-
lessly to the city square. The double
curved, partly transparent, roof surface
is draped as a second steel skin around
the structure.

Arup is responsible for mechanical

and electrical engineering, building
physics, fire engineering and structu-
ral engineering. A clever structure
has created a spacious lobby with
a minimal number of columns. The
ventilation systems of the auditoria,
lobby and stage tower can operate
independently, allowing flexible use.
The hybrid roof structure facilitates
heat extraction, allowing air exhaust
all year round and heat recovery
previous next 01 Exterior view UNStudio during the winter period.

Grand theatre projects is one of the core goals
of Arup, defined in Ove Arups
Fly tower and basement
key speech as Total Architecture.
Small theatre and office area The design for the Theatre Spijkenisse
was set up following this ideal and
MEP Arups BEM strategy.
Entrance and foyer area
A Structures team and MEP team from
Grand theatre
Arup worked closely together, realising
Grand plant room an integrated design. BIM modelling
Fly tower and basement
techniques were adopted for both the
structural design and the MEP design,
Small theatre and office area
representing the geometry in both
aspect models as actual 3D objects.
In addition, other technologies, such
as parametric design, analysis, and
optimisation were coupled to the BIM
modelling processes.

Based on the BEM strategy, and in

close relation with the client and the
design partners, Arup realised a fully
integrated structural and MEP design
for the Theatre Spijkenisse.
