    SHIPBUILDINGTASK

    Fillintheblankswiththecorrespondingconcept.

    1.Theforwardendoftheshipiscalledthebow,theafterendisthestern,andhalfway
    betweenthetwoisamidships.Thebeamoftheshipisthedistancebetweenthetwo
    ship'ssides.

    2.Thehullorthebodyoftheshipincludestheouterskinorshell(plating),andallthe
    membersandpartswhichholdthistogether,divideitintocompartmentsandgiveit
    strengthandrigidity.

    3.Threebasicrequirementsofshipsaretheabilitytofloat(buoyancy),theabilityto
    staytogether(strength),andtheabilitytostayrightsideup(stability).

    4.Theshellplatingistheouterskinoftheshipandismadeupofagreatmanysteel
    platesfastenedtogetherbywelding.Eachhorizontalrowofplatingiscalledastrake.
    StrakesareusuallyletteredABCD,etc.,beginningwiththerownexttothekeel/flat
    keel.Thisstrakeiscalledthegarboardstrakewhilethetopstrake,nexttothemain
    deck,iscalledthesheerstrake.Thetwoessentialsoftheshellarewatertightnessand
    strength.

    5.Bulkheadsarelargepartitionsmadeofplatesrivetedorweldedtogetherandstiffenedwith
    anglebars,Tbars,etc.Dependingonthetypeofshiptherearetransverse,longitudinalandside
    bulkheads.Theydividetheshipinto compartments foreandaft,orfromporttostarboard,
    andtheymayrunbetweentwoormoredecks.

    6.The keelofashipistherowatthebottomoftheshipextendingfromthebowtothestern
    alongthecentreline. Decks,correspondingtothefloorsofahouse,areflatsectionsofsteel
    plates.Thedeckconstructedbetweenthreeandfourfeetabovetheshellatthebottomiscalled
    theinnerbottomortanktop,becausebetweenthesetwosectionsofsteelplatesmakeupthe
    double bottom with its tanks used for carrying fuel oil, water ballast, etc. The transverse
    vertical plates dividing these tanks into sections are called floors whereas the longitudinal
    verticalplatesarecalledgirders.Stringersarelongsectionsfittedinvariouspartsofthevessel
    togiveaddedstrength.Dependingupontheirlocations,stringersareknownasbilgestringers,
    side stringers,hold stringers,etc.However,Whentheyarefoundinthedoublebottomthey
    arecalledlongitudinals.

    7.Thestemisfastenedtotheforwardendofthekeelandextendsuptothetopofthehullat
    thebowwhilethe sternpost istheverticalmemberattheafterendoftheshipshull.The
    frames,whicharetheribsoftheship,servetogivetheshipherformandatthesametime
    supportandstiffentheshellplating.Theyarefastenedatthebottomtotheouterendsofthe
    floorsandatthetoptothedeck beamsby brackets.Decksaresupportedbytransverseand
    longitudinalmemberscalledbeamsandgirders,usedasconnectionsandstrengtheningpieces.
