Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Greetings of peace,

On Wednesday we begin the penitential season of Lent, a wonderful opportunity to grow in

our holiness. Our Church on Arch Street has a 70-year tradition of welcoming people to
receive ashes on Ash Wednesday. Many people are perhaps most receptive to an invitation
to attend church on three days of the year: Christmas, Easter, and Ash Wednesday. Who
do you know who might accept a personal invitation from you to attend St. Anthony Shrine
on Ash Wednesday? Perhaps you know someone who might benefit from one of our
programs? Ash Wednesday is a great time to give people their introduction to this place.

As we consider the different opportunities we have to deepen our life of faith during Lent, I
would encourage you to be bold in your risk-taking. There is no Church penalty for taking
big spiritual risks and failing. There is, though, the possibility that we all might get to the end
of our lives and regret not having loved or forgiven enough. Sometimes important
opportunities to show that we care are more fleeting than they seem at first. Both Jesus and
St. Francis acted decisively, taking huge risks during their lifetimes. We should be as bold.

May you have a blessed Lent,

Fr. Thomas Conway, OFM

Executive Director
