Badger Brothers Coffee moves to expand direct trade

March 1, 2017 - Badger Brothers Coffee, the shop where Main Street spends its mornings, is
pleased to announce they will be expanding their line of direct trade coffees.

Starting in June, customers will be able to choose from two varieties grown on family-owned
farms in Guatemala, along with the Regalos de Dios blend, which has been directly sourced from
Nicaragua since 2015. They will include a dark and light roast, and Owner Darin Shireman says
he hopes to have an in-store contest to help select names for the new varieties. He said involving
his customers and the community in some way is important to him, as they have been the key to
the success of his direct trade agreements.

The blend from Nicaragua has been so popular, and customers loved learning about the farm
and the family there, Shireman said. Living in a rural community, people really appreciate the
work that goes into farming and it helps them build a connection with the product in a unique
way. When I found the opportunity to establish more direct trade partnerships, the community
was behind me 100 percent.

Shireman will travel to Guatemala in April to tour the farms and learn more about the bean
growing process directly from the farmers. It will be his second trip to the country. When the
new varieties arrive in store, they will expand Badger Brothers selection to 15 coffee blends.

Remodel brings new opportunities to Badger Brothers Coffee, community

September 1, 2016 - As students prepare to return to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville,
Badger Brothers Coffee will be ready and waiting with their newly renovated space.

Over the last two months, Owner Darin Shireman worked closely with a design team to renovate
a large portion of the shop, clearing out dated storage space and replacing it with new seating and
a music area. Shireman said many of the updates were responding to community needs.

Students and community members alike love having a place they can come sit and relax, visit
with friends, or find some focus, but our seating filled fast, Shireman said. By opening up this
space, we were able to bring in some couches and oversized chairs to create that really
comfortable atmosphere. We even had space for my grandfathers old piano, which adds to that
homey feel and gives us a lot more flexibility with our Open Mic Nights, one of our most
popular events.

The new space has been a welcome addition for Melissa Kieler. She said she considered herself a
regular at Badger Brothers when she was studying Industrial Engineering at UW-Platteville and
even though she now owns her own business in Monroe, Wisconsin, she said she makes frequent
trips back to Platteville just to visit the shop.

There is something special about this space. I always love playing Open Mics here, Kieler
said. Badger Brothers brings in people from all over the area. Now that they have more space to
work with, I think they can get the community even more involved.

A less visible update took place in the back of the shop, where Shireman added new roasting
equipment. Shireman roasts all 13 varieties of Badger Brothers Coffee on site in small batches.
He said the new equipment will allow him to expand his operations and experiment with new
roasts and varieties, while providing the same high quality coffee people have come to expect
from his shop.

All are invited to check out the new renovations at Badger Brothers Coffee at 10 East Main
Street. The shop is open 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Badger Brothers Introduces Direct Trade Coffee

March 1, 2015 - Badger Brothers Coffee LLC, a staple of Platteville, Wisconsins Main Street
community for over a decade, is proud to announce it will now offer direct trade coffee, along
with its fair trade and organic options.

The Nicaragua Regalos de Dios is a light roast coffee sourced from Beneficio de Segovia, a
small family farm owned by Luis Baladarez in Ocotal, Nicaragua. According to Badger Brothers
Owner Darin Shireman, the direct trade partnership promises many benefits for his shop,
Baladarezs farm, and the communities both serve.

This direct trade partnership cuts out the distributor and allows for more quality control of the
product, higher profits and improved working conditions for farmers, and lower costs for
customers, Shireman said. It really takes the best aspects about shopping local and applies
them to a global scale. Both communities will see a personal and financial benefit.

Shireman toured Ocotal and the mountain region of Nicaragua near the Honduran border for two
weeks in January. While there, he harvested and shelled beans from the berries to gain a better
understanding of farming practices used at Beneficio de Segovia. The beans he cleaned will
make a small portion of the first shipment, which will be available for retail sale in the shop and
online starting April 1, 2015.

This will be the 13th coffee variety that Shireman will roast and sell on-site. He said he hopes to
add more direct trade partnerships in the future, with a focus on organic and sustainable growing
practices.
