Why are you interested in volunteering your time at UAMS
this summer?
I would like to pursue a health/medicinal related career, and I feel
this would be the best way to expose myself and begin my journey into healthcare.
2. Have you had personal experiences related to healthcare
and/or medicine that have prompted your decision to apply to this program? Tell us what interests you the most about healthcare and medicine.
I have always had an interest in medicine, and my passion only
increased when I started talking with my aunt who is an OBGYN surgeon at Saline Memorial Hospital in Benton. Medicine interests me most because it is amazing how a drug or surgical procedure can potentially save a life. Doctors dedicate their lives to helping others, and I have always enjoyed service.
3. Brag on yourself! What significant school-related (or non-
school related) achievements have you accomplished? In addition, please share jobs/duties you have held in your community and in school that have demonstrated your dependability, commitment and level of responsibility. This year I am an officer for our schools drama club. Since becoming an officer, I have recruited members, and now the club has almost doubled in size. I am in charge of helping the other three officers decide on the curriculum and activities each week. For the past month, I have almost entirely led the drama club single-handedly by being proactive and organizing a five week long workshop for the members. I am currently a musician for the Studio Theater. Once hired to play the music for a show, I only receive the score about two weeks prior to the opening night, and only rehearse with the other musicians and actors about twice. They depend on me to know my music and to be confident enough to enhance the performance. I have done well enough that the theaters president and director of music has invited me to be a part of the orchestra whenever I please and to join any of his orchestras for a show without auditioning. Very few people have been given this opportunity, and to achieve this status, I had to put in many hours of hard work, even when I did not necessarily want to. I am on my churchs Youth Advisory Team (YAT for short) for the second year (Freshmen are not allowed on the team), and I am the head of the social committee along with another co-head. Together she and I plan at least one to two parties per month, sometimes more. This past Halloween I single handedly planned and organized 90% of the work on an interactive murder mystery party that was supposed to last for three hours with no down time. In addition to planning and executing, I stayed for the cleanup and breakdown as well. For two years, I have been a volunteer at the Central Arkansas Library System, working in the childrens program and page program primarily. For the childrens program, I have helped implement weekly activities and crafts. Ranging from dressing up as a storybook character to reading kids to distributing snacks, Ive done it all. In the page program, I have worked in the main section of the library for a few hours a day numerous times a week. The page program consists of reading shelves-a simple way of saying that I would alphabetize books, shelve them correctly, and keep them in a neat looking order-as well as searching for and cataloging missing books. The program also has other duties, but those are the main ones. Later this semester and for my senior year, I will be tutoring at the Arkansas School for the Deaf (ASD.) I will go to the school a couple of times a week after classes and tutor the students in subjects they have difficulty with, especially math, as that is my strongpoint and I know more mathematical sign language than I do any other subject. 4. We receive hundreds of applications for this program; please tell us about your summer plans, such as vacations, camps or other commitments, as well as anything that might interfere with your participation in the HEALERS Program during the program dates. I have no interfering times or dates, and if a conflict arises, I will work it around the HEALERS Program.
