engineeredcars,notonlyassessingthemfromtheengineeringstandpointofmileageandpower,
butfromtheartisticstandpointofdesignandappeal.Thefieldofcardesignandmanufacturing
hasbeenexcitingmyimaginationforthebreadthofknowledgeitdemandstoproduceand
perfectit.Fromharnessingnaturallawsofphysicsandunderstandingofscienceofmaterialsto
integratingnuancedelectronicsand,aboveall,trainingthemindtothinklikeanartist,likethe
onewhofeelsperfectfunctioningisnotenough,buttherehastobestimulatingaestheticsthat
dazzleswithmajesticsimplicityandsolidness,likeapoetwhowishestosayallhewishestosay

andAmpereinthefinalyearofmystudiestaughtmemoreaboutmechanicalandautomobile
engineeringthanthesubjectsthatIwasexposedtheoretically,andthusthisexperienceproves
nowtobedecisiveformyorientationtowardsAutomobileEngineering.

internedatthisfirm,Iparticipatedinthedesignandanalysisofelectricpassengerthreewheeler.
Iwillgiveamacroglanceofmywork.Weweregiventheoveralldimensionofavehicleand

rearsuspensionofthebody,andmadeadesignofeachofthesemodulesunderstressandload

nothinggreatabouttheobjectiveortheworkthatIdid.ButthelessonsthatIhadlearnedwhile
movingtowardsthedesignobjectivewereinvaluableinthatIgotanideaoftherealproblems
andfrustrationsonewouldfaceintheworldofpracticaldesign,besidestheinfluencesIcame
across,someaccidentallyandsomeconsciouslytomakemydesignwork.Andtheseexperiences
werefulfilling.

Thedesignwasnotonlyconstrainedbythenotionofappeal,butbythefunctiontoo,andwhen
weiteratedthedesignversions,theimplicationofthechangewasfeltrightfromthechangein
aerodynamicresistance,lightnessofthevehicle,engineefficiency,andpickuptotheexternal
beauty.Workingcloselywithmaterialspeopleandengineassemblersandexternalbody
designershelpedmeidentifytheroleandimportanceofsuchpeopleinthemakingofavehicle.
Theeducationwasholistic,anddeeplysatisfying,asIreceivedanintegratednotionof
manufacturing.Designhadanoutcomeandithadconstraints,frommanyangles,andwhenthe
scopeofworkwaswithinanarrowarea,thethoroughnessitrequiredwasatfirstdaunting.

notjustit,butanyperfectengineering,whereinengineerismoreofacraftsmanthansomebody
whodesignsbecausethatishisjob.Thetruthinthisworkambianceinwhichperfectionwas
takenforgrantedandpersistencewasnaturalamongpeople,andpatiencewasneededtocreate
workthatstandstoweringall,IgotthestrongestimpulsetodoAutomobileEngineering.Having
readaboutthedifferentcarmakers,andtookpleasureindiscriminatingcarsbasedonthesound
oftheengineasaboy,andhavebeenhearingagainandagainthatGermancarslastandstands
thetestoftime,andJapanesecarssecondthem,andAmericancarshavelostintherace,Iwish
eagerlytolearnwhybehindalltheseobservations.Andalsobecomeabettercraftsman.Ilove
cardesign.AndthusIlovetolearnaboutengineering,asgooddesignisasmuchformas
function.IthinkSteveJobssaid,Gooddesignisnotjusthowitlooks,buthowitworks.It
