Title of Lesson: Light and Lenses Activity Stations Lesson Plan Name: Kimberly Conner

School: Peet Junior High Grade: 9th

Date: January 27, 2017
Enrichment/Extension/Modification/Differentiation:
Linguistic learners, Interpersonal, Visual, Bodily/Kinesthetic learners - small groups will
rotate the room completing various activities about light and lenses
o Students will be working together in small groups to complete activities over
different qualities of light and lenses
Intrapersonal learners- each student will have their own lab packet to complete
o Answering questions and completing calculations on their own
Materials:
125 copies of the light and lenses pre-test
125 copies of the light and lenses lab packet
All 13 stations set up with each of their materials (see attached document)
Standard: HS-PS4-4. Evaluate the validity and reliability of claims in published materials of
the effects that different frequencies of electromagnetic radiation have when absorbed by matter.
[Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the idea that photons associated with different
frequencies of light have different energies, and the damage to living tissue from electromagnetic
radiation depends on the energy of the radiation. Examples of published materials could include
trade books, magazines, web resources, videos, and other passages that may reflect bias.]
Objectives:
Once the lesson over light and lenses is complete, 75% of ninth-grade biology students will be
able to complete the following:
Choose and describe any of the different properties of light with 85% accuracy
(cognitive)
o This includes the differences between concave and convex lenses, materials light
passes through, regular and diffuse reflection, and filters.
Understand and appreciate the importance of light and the different everyday uses in our
lives (affective)
Create their own explanations for how corrective lenses work by developing a diagram
depicting the difference between near and far sighted eye sight with 80 % accuracy
(psychomotor)
Prerequisites:
Students should be familiar with the following:
Properties of waves
Visible light portion of the electromagnetic spectrum
Differences between reflection, refraction, and diffraction
Time:
46 minutes
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to help the students fully understand each piece of the
Electromagnetic Spectrum and apply that knowledge to their everyday lives.
Anticipatory Set: Have students complete pre-test for light and lenses unit
Students will complete a pretest over the light and lenses unit to gage their understanding
before a week of activities and lessons
Guided Instruction:
Students will complete their pre-test over the properties of light
Once the exam is complete, briefly introduce each light activities station for the light and
lenses lab
o Explain the need to know information about each station
All stations are numbered 1-13 and have specific directions for each
activity that correspond to the attached lab packet
Check for understanding:
Ask students at the end of directions if they have any questions
Continually walk around the classroom monitoring students as they begin their
exploration of light and lenses
Independent Practice:
The independent practice for this lesson comes into play when each student writes their
own descriptions, calculations, and diagrams of each of the 13 activities they complete
during this lab session
Closure:
Remind students that they will have class time for the next three days to finish up any
activity stations they have not completed yet
Assessment:
Students will have a test one week from today over light and lenses
