Big or Essential Question: Two letters can spell one sound. I can spell words by segmenting
and blending sounds. Sh is a digraph and I know what sound it spells.

Curriculum Standards: CC.1.1.1.D Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis
skills in decoding words. (Identify common consonant digraphs, final-e, and common vowel
teams)

CC.1.1.1.C Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).


Orally produce single-syllable words, including consonant blends and digraphs.

Lesson Objectives: The students will be able to identify the wh and sh digraphs in 9 out of
10 words. The students will be able to correctly spell 8 out of 10 wh and sh words using
segmenting and blending skills.

Assessment: The students will circle the digraphs wh and sh in a word list on the smartboard.
The teacher will observe the students segmenting/blending wh and sh words using the
smartboard and/or letter cards.

Materials and Resources:


letter cards for spelling (1 set per student)
digraph definition flashcard (teacher)
smartboard
smartboard digraph document

Vocabulary:
digraph: two letters that spell one sound

Anticipatory Set: Watch and sing the digraph youtube song and watch the Geraldine the
Giraffe learns the /sh/ sound Youtube video.

Procedures:
1. Following the anticipatory set, have the children come up with other words that have the
/sh/ digraph in them (beginning or end).
2. Have the students practice whispering the /sh/ sound
3. Explain expectations for smartboard activity.
4. Have the students complete the smartboard pages.
5. Have the students take turns circling the digraphs on the smartboard while the others
follow along on their worksheets.
6. Spell the words: ship, shape, shine, shark, wash, wish, fish, whale, white, when using
letter cards.
7. Have the students take turns dragging down the letters to spell each word on the
smartboard while the others write the spellings on notebook paper.
8. Collect all papers.

Adaptations: read directions aloud to all students; small group instruction for all students;
letters stored in different shapes to indicate different types of letters for JS; different colored font
to indicate different types of letters for BM, JT, AS, AD, TS, CW, and NS

Closure: Exit ticket: make the /sh/ sound and tell me what a digraph is.
