Teaching English Listening To Young Learners

A. LISTENING
Listening is the active process of receiving and responding to spoken (and
sometimes unspoken) messages. "Listening is not merely not talking," said poet Alice
Duer Miller. "You can listen like a blank wall or like a splendid auditorium where every
sound comes back fuller and richer."Listening is one of the subjects studied in the field of
language arts and in the discipline of conversation analysis.

B. TEACHING ENGLISH LISTENING

Given the importance of listening in language learning and teaching, it is essential
for language teachers to help their students become effective listeners. In the
communicative approach to language teaching, this means modeling listening strategies
and providing listening practice in authentic situations: those that learners are likely to
encounter when they use the language outside the classroom.
There are many kind of media in teaching listening prosess to young learners
Story telling
Game
guess the word

a. Storytelling is the social and cultural activity of sharing stories, often with
improvisation, theatrics, or embellishment. Stories or narratives have been shared in
every culture as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation and
instilling moral values. Crucial elements of stories and storytelling include plot,
characters and narrative point of view. The term 'storytelling' is used in a narrow
sense to refer specifically to oral storytelling and also in a looser sense to refer to
techniques used in other media to unfold or disclose the narrative of a story. With
 story telling we can teach the listening to student namely to young learners .when we
want to teach this to young learners we need many way or strategy in deliver to
studends.
1. We must prepare the material
2. We must look for the intresting story before
3. Tell to students
4. Make the student listen well
5. And ask the student retell infront of class after the teacher tell

b. A game is structured form of play, usually undertaken for enjoyment and sometimes
used as an educational too. Usually game used in prosess teaching listening which
aims to make students happy to learn, there are many strategy in teaching listening by
game
1. We ask the students to count from one until three
2. Ask the students gether with their group
3. And make line infront of the class with their group
4. The student behind given sentence by the teacher
5. whispered untin the leader infront
6. And the leader write in whiteboard
7. The teacher give score

c. Guess the word is media to teach listening to our students we can mention this media
is game because this media make the student happy, enjoy and understand what the
students guess, and there are some strategy to expose this media in our learning
namely in listening :
1. Scientific Approach
2. Students observe the material in power point or media images created by the
teacher.
3. .Eksplorasi: Teacher explore the ability of students Students try to mention
the variety of images that have been made

The second strategy in teaching listening by guess word is:

1. Preparing Teachers media tools that will be used on the model of charades,
namely Bando wire and a piece of paper containing the questions and
answers.
2. Card sized 10x10 cm for questions and cards 5x5 cm to answer charades.
3. A student is given a card measuring 10x10 cm that is later read by her partner
4. Other students are given a 5x5 cm cards whose contents may not be read and
then shoot over the head with a headband that associate media wire.
 5. While her partner to guess what is on the card 5x5cm
6. the answer must be appropriate and in accordance with written on the card at
the top of the head pair.
7. If the answer is right then this couple get points

C. CONCLUTION
Listening is an active process, as the mind actively engages in making meaning. It
is therefore our duty as teachers to ensure that the materials we use are comprehensible to
our young learners, as well as within the range of what they are developmentally ready
for. Listening is also hard work! And can be stressful! So in order to maximise the
potential for acquisition of language, we need to ensure that our young learners are not
stressed about this process.
