Stoichiometry Worksheet: Limiting Reagents

The equation below is for the reaction of hydrogen and nitrogen to produce ammonia gas.
3 H2 (g) + N2 (g) 2 NH3 (g)
1. Make a drawing that represents a reaction container with 15 molecules of hydrogen and
8 molecules of nitrogen. Use a square to represent a single nitrogen atom (i.e. a molecule = ),
use a circle to represent a single hydrogen atom (i.e. molecule = ).

2. Make a drawing of the reaction container AFTER the reaction has occurred.

3. How many molecules of ammonia are formed? _______________________

4. What reactant (reagent) is in excess and by how many molecules ?

*** FOR ALL OF THE PROBLEMS BELOW, BE SURE TO SHOW WORK AND TAKE INTO
ACCOUNT SIG FIGS!!!

5. 27.60 g of nitrogen and 9.90 g of hydrogen react to form ammonia. What is the limiting reactant and
how many grams of ammonia is formed?

6. In #5 above, if you were just looking at the numbers, 27.60g N2 and 9.90g H2, you might have assumed
that H2 was going to be the limiting reactant. Why is it that you CANT just look at the mass values
going in to determine the limiting reactant??? Explain.

7. A mixture of 40.0 g of hydrogen and 350 g of oxygen reacts to produce water. Be sure to write out the
balanced equation! What is the limiting reactant and how many grams of water is formed?

8. A mixture of 50.0 g of nitrogen and 55 g of oxygen react to form nitrogen monoxide. Be sure to write
out the balanced equation! What is the limiting reactant and how much NO(g) is formed?

9. Urea, (NH2)2CO is used as fertilizer and as animal feed and is used in the polymer industry. It is
prepared by reacting ammonia with carbon dioxide to make urea and water. One day, you mixed
637.2g of NH3 and 1142.1 g of CO2. What is the limiting reactant and how many grams of urea would
you make??? Be sure to write out the balanced reaction! Also, just a tip, dont worry about the other
productif one product is limited so will the other!!!

10. Twelve mols (12.0 mols) of hydrogen gas react with ten mols (10.0 mols) of nitrogen gas to
produce ammonia. What is the limiting reagent and how many mols of ammonia gas are produced?
This is actually an EASY one! You are in MOLES already!!!

11. 7.811 g of magnesium metal reacts with 5.00 moles of hydrochloric acid.
a) Write out the balanced equation.
b) Which reactant is the limiting reactant and how many grams of hydrogen gas will you make?
c) How much of the EXCESS reactant will you have left????
