    UAF has been converting lighting to more efficient options like LEDs over the past 20 years to reduce energy costs and maintenance needs. Early projects included converting emergency phones and some lecture halls to LEDs. Larger conversions included academic buildings being fully converted to T-8 fluorescent bulbs by 2007. Testing of LED street lights and dorm lighting was successful in reducing costs. UAF will continue evaluating LED upgrades as prices decrease and quality improves to identify the most efficient and cost effective lighting technologies.

    UAFhasmademanylightingimprovements,overtheyears.Lightingcomprisesnearly30%ofourpower
    plant'soutput.Asaresult,lightinghasbeenafocusofmanyconversioneffortsatUAFspanningmorethan
    20years.

    Oneofourmostsuccessfulconservationefforts,whichbeganin1994,hasbeenasystemwideconversion
    toanew,moreefficientfluorescentlampcalledtheT8.TheT8'suse1/3lessenergyandlast21/4years
    longerthanitspredecessor.Thischangehassignificantlyreducedourelectricbillandmaintenancecosts.
    WehavealsobeentestingandresearchingLEDtechnologiesandpotentialuses.

    Inthelate1990's,thecampusemergencyphone'slightswereconvertedtoLEDs.ThelonglifeoftheLEDs
    increasedsafetyandreducedmaintenancelaborcosts.

    In2006:
    1. UAFworkedwithAlbeo,Inc.totesttheirLEDfixturesintheicecorefreezerroomatElvey.The
    fixturesdidnotprovideenoughlight.Whenproperfixturesareavailable,LEDswouldprovide
    doublesavingsofconversationfromincandescentlampsandreducechillerloads.

    2. DavisConcertHallandReichardtBuildinglecturehalls201and202:PathwayLEDlights
    installed.Reduceslabortoreplaceshortlivedincandescentlamps.

    3. TestedLEDholidaylights.Thelifeofoutdoorholidaylightswastooshortandultimatelymore
    costly.

    In2007:

    1. CompletedT8conversionofacademicandresearchbuildings.Someconversionscompletedin
    ResidenceLifefacilities.

    2. ThompsonDrive:ParkingservicesinstalledLEDfixturesoninformationandparkingkiosks.

    In2009:
    1. Upperdorm(Moore,Bartlett,Skarland):JanuaryLEDstestedandsuccessful.Incandescents
    wereshortlived.AprilRelampedsoffitaroundthecomplex.Sixtyincandescentlampsreplaced
    withLEDs.Paybackonelectricalusagelessthantwoyears,laborsavings,andstudentshave
    reliableilluminationalongpathways.

    2. KuskokwimCampusfacilityupgrade:LEDexteriorlightinginstalled.

    3. HarperBuilding:LEDsinstalledfornewsignage.

    4. LolaTillyEastentrance:YellowsodiumvaporfixturesunderwalkwaycanopyreplacedwithLED
    fixtures.Previousilluminationwasinadequate.NewLEDprovidedbetterilluminationand
    enhancedaesthetics.

    5. Northbikepath,betweenNorthTananaDrivetoFarmersLoop:HighIntensityDischarge(HID)
    fixturesreplacedwithLEDfixtures.

    6. BarnetteStreetParkinggarage:UAFparkingservicesevaluatingcostbenefitsofconversionto
    InductionlightingfromexistingandfailingHIDfixtures.
    In2010:

    1. IntersectionofTananaLoopWestandYukonDrive:Teststreetlightpolehasbeeninstalled.LED
    fixtureinstalledinJanuary.

    WehavealsobeeninvestigatingconvertingUAF'sexistingstreetlightstoLEDs.UAFcurrentlyhas100+
    streetlightfixtures.ALEDstreetlight,costing$2,000andanother$500toinstallonlyhas10,00hoursof
    additionallife.Thisiscurrentlynotthemostcosteffectivechange,untilthepriceperunitdecreases.The
    entirefixturemayneedtobereplacedandqualityoflightmaynotbeincreased.PlusinOctober,wewere
    advisedbytheStateofAlaskathatcurrentLEDtechnologyinretrofittedexistinghighpressurelighting
    systemsdonotmeettheNationalHighwayStandards.

    Wewillcontinuetowatchastechnologyimprovestoensurethatthecampusesrenovationand
    improvementprojectsaremadeusingthemostefficientandcosteffectivetechnologyavailable.
