21st Century Lesson:

Grade: 11 Subject: Art

Driving Question: How can I create a Pop Art piece that reflects the intent and style of Andy
Warhols portraits?

Curriculum Outcomes:

Explore, challenge, develop, and express ideas using the skills, language, techniques, and processes
of the arts.

Demonstrate critical awareness of and value for the role of the arts in creating and reflecting
culture.

Understand the role of technologies in creating and responding to expressive works.

Analyze the relationship between artistic intent and the expressive work.

Expected Time: 3 hours

Resources: Internet, PC Computer, LED Projector, Overhead Projector, Light Table, Photocopier,
Personal Devices, Tempera and acrylic paint, oil pastels.

Teacher does (I Do): find, validate
Discuss the focus, influences, and goals of the Pop Art remember, understand
movement. Show examples of work of some of the more collaborate, communicate

Individual student work (You Do): find, validate
1. Research Andy Warhol, and look at examples of his remember, understand
portraits, noting types of portraits used, who his collaborate, communicate
subjects were, what colour relationships were used, as analyze, synthesize

2. Choose a celebrity who you consider a contemporary

3. Find an online photo of that celebrity to use for your art citizenship
piece. Save it.

4. Open your saved photo in a photo editing program ie.


Paint.net
5. Crop image and convert photo to Black and White.

6. Adjust brightness and contrast until image is broken


into 3 basic separations: Black, white, grey.

7. Using the fill feature, experiment with different colour


combinations, ie. Complimentary colours

8. Once youve selected the colour scheme, print the


picture.
9. Using tracing paper, or a light table, create a line
drawing of image that identifies the colour separations.

10. Create an overhead transparency of image


11. Project overhead unto desired surface and to desired
size.
12. Trace image.

13. Using coloured print as your guide, colour your image


using chosen medium. Ie. Paint, or oil pastel.
14. Write a critique of your work that includes a brief
biography of the artist, as well as an explanation of idea
and intent. Discuss image choice, organization, process,
and overall results ( what worked, what might be
changed) (see critique guide line sheet)

Differentiation/Modification/Enrichment:
Demonstrate process steps as needed.
For students with high needs and challenges, assistance may be needed to manipulate computer
mouse, or device.

Students with limited motor skills may only be required to:


1)Create a coloured photo of edited picture. (steps 1-7)
2)Paint or colour tracing without enlarging with overhead transparency.

For enriched students, they may decide to create a more original piece by using a selfie or other
photo theyve taken. They could also do the piece using print making techniques.
