ASSIGNMENT 4: THE TWENTIETH CENTURY


POPULAR MUSIC STYLES: RESEARCH PROJECT
There are many styles of music that are recognised as being Twentieth Century styles,
although some of them have their origins in music prior to this time. Below is a list of
popular music styles that you should already know:

Part of the outcome for the Understanding Music Unit is that learners will:

Recognise and identify music concepts and styles by identifying and analysing the
social and cultural influences which have influenced the distinctive sounds and
structures of specific musical styles.

RESEARCH TASK
You are going to research the history of FOUR of these styles in the table above. You should
use a range of sources to help you to carry out your research, e.g. the internet / books / your
parents knowledge. You can choose the four styles that you want to study, but you must
select TWO from each column. Your aim is to present the following information:

Give a definition of each style, explaining what the main features / concepts of the
style are;
Explain when each style originated and how it developed;
Identify which social and cultural factors influenced the development of each
style;
Provide examples of which artistes / songs made each style famous;
Explain (and justify) your personal opinion of each style.

You should decide on a way to present your findings - powerpoint, poster, mind map or word-
processed document.
