 Why Plant A Church?
God. God loves the church. And God loves the city. The
Church is His Plan A for His work in the world.
People. New churches reach people that existing
churches have not reached. They do so by embedding
the holistic gospel into the lives of people. The gospel of
Jesus is the answer to the deepest longings of the human
heart.
City. When a church embodies the hope of the gospel
through practicing the way of Jesus, the surrounding city
will see its needs being met. The hungry will be fed. The
lonely will be comforted. The poor will be cared for. The
immigrant will be embraced. The prisoner will be visited.
And the city will experience gospel renewal.

By the power of the Holy Spirit, this is the kind of community we hope to become.
A community committed to

Learning the Jesus way

Loving one another well
Gathering around bread and wine
Becoming a people of prayer
The Plan.

Gather. Weekly gatherings are the primary way we will

come together as a church around the bread and wine,
to pray, learn the Scriptures, and worship together as
the people of God.

Scatter. During the week we will scatter in

neighborhoods across the city to live out the teachings
of Jesus. The primary way this will happen is in
Communities, where we will practice the way of Jesus,
together in San Diego. Its where we live as family, eating,
praying, and sharing life together. Its also where we live
as missionaries as we join in Jesus kingdom work in
our neighborhoods, workplaces, and city. We will also
work for justice both globally and locally through
Hear the Cryan initiative funded by five percent of all
giving that comes into the church. Another five percent
will go directly to planting new churches from scratch,
helping established churches grow, and furthering
evangelism.

Serve. Followers of Jesus are called to become servants.

We want to actively demonstrate self-sacrificial love by
serving those both in and outside the church. It takes all
kinds of volunteers to pull off an urban church plant. We
are a family, and like a family, we all pitch in.

Give. We dream of becoming a church marked by radical

generosity. Many kinds of resources are required in order
to plant a church. As we prepare to plant in San Diego,
one of those resources is money. You can participate in the
work God is doing in this beautiful city by giving financially.
Timeline:

2011. Desire. While living in San Diego, God put the city
in our hearts. We began praying for Gods dream for
San Diego to become ours.

2012. Call. Our desire to be part of Gods movement in

San Diego continued to grow. But He wanted us to move
somewhere else first.

2013. Family. Move from San Diego to Portland to join the

Westside family. We pastored the worship
life of the church while receiving rich leadership training
for a future church plant.

2016. Prepare. Begin strategic preparations for the move

back to San Diego. Begin fundraising for the work. Begin
prayer gatherings in Portland.

June 2017. Move back to San Diego and begin

prayer and vision meetings on the ground. Begin outreach
to the city. Begin night of worships and prayer.

Summer Fall 2017. Equip and train the launch team.

2017 Advent Pre-Launch.

2017 Christmas Eve Launch.

January 2018. Weekly worship gatherings begin.

2018. Practice the way of Jesus together in San Diego.

The Call.

incapable of doing the work of the kingdom. So we
