Description
I am currently a Professor of Italian Studies and Semiotics and Head of Western European
Studies at Tallinn University. I hold an MA degree (University of Milano, 1995) in Philosophy, a
PhD (University of Tartu, 2008) in Semiotics and I have been a postdoctoral research fellow at
the Department of Comparative Literature of Yale University (2013/14). I teach a range of
subjects in contemporary Italian history, society and politics, philosophy of language,
comparative literature and research seminars.
My research is characterized by a wide and interdisciplinary range of interests which include
philosophy of language, translation theory, literary semiotics, Italian studies and contemporary
critical theory with particular focus on the political thought of Agamben, Badiou, Negri,
Rancire and iek. Since 2003 I have participated in several international research projects in
the fields of linguistics, semiotics, translation studies and from 2010 to 2012 I have been the
recipient of the Estonian Science Foundations research grant Translators (Re)shaping Cultural
Repertoire.
I have presented the results of my research on these topics in around 60 academic articles and
been the initiator and editor of 6 collections of papers in five different languages published by
both Estonian-based and international scientific journals and publishers. I am presently working
on the book project "Exceeding spaces, loose temporalities. The (De)construction of Totality in
Philosophy, Semiotics and Politics" which critically explores the nature of theoretical thinking
and constructs in the humanities.
I have authored literary and essayistic translations from Estonian into Italian. I regularly publish
reviews and essays on cultural journals and Estonian newspapers.
