Top 20s Communicate You Matter and Help

Others Succeed
Truth or Idea to be Taught: IQ and EQ Whole Human Being (Keep in mind that there
may be more questions than you need to convey this truth to the students. Use as
needed)
Teacher Background Information: The Inspiration Team has been empowered with
the opportunity to bring the ideals of Top 20 into our community. The topic of this lesson
was considered by the entire Inspiration Team to be the most impactful for the Eagle
Ridge community. This lesson seeks to remind students that in order to have a well-
balanced life, they must see themselves for their entire worth, not just their academic
achievement.
Estimated Time: 1 Advisory Period
Materials Needed:
Human being precedes human doing displayed
on board
blank bike handouts
Essential Question: What qualities do happy,
successful people have?
Lesson Flow:
Preparation: Ask students to respond to these
questions to prompt their thinking (5 minutes)
What does the phrase Human being
precedes human doing mean?
Why do we value doing over human being?
Why is it easier to value doing over being?
o Possible Answer = accomplishments are easy to measure and value

Presentation of Types: Explore as a whole class how societal/cultural emphasis

on humans as doers diminishes an individuals humanity (10-12 minutes)
What is a human being? How have cultural views impacted your definition?
What happens when we diminish human beings to their accomplishments? (ie.
grades, sports, clubs, extracurricular activities, etc.) What gets left out?
Discuss with a partner:
o When was a time that you felt your human doing (accomplishments)
seemed more important than your human being?
o How did that make you feel?
o How would you like to be viewed, taking into account your whole human
being?
Finish this up by having a few students share their responses to these answers.

Comparison of Types: Discuss as a whole class how cultural views, often

negative, compare with a positive view of a whole human being (12-15 Minutes)
Seeing the whole human being - through discussion with your prompting be
sure to get to the idea that Human being encompasses human doing, but alone
does not make a whole human being.
o So what else is needed to make a whole human being?
o How are these virtues, values, or skills developed?
What role does truth, beauty, and goodness play in developing a whole human
being?
Bike Analogy:
o A properly tuned functioning bike consists of many different components.
Pedals, seat, handlebars, back and front tires, gears, frame, brakes, etc.
Others?
o Doing is basically just the pedals (Perseverance). Without the other
components, youre probably not going anywhere.
So what are the other components? And what is the function of each of
the necessary components?
o What happens if your bike has ____________?
A flat tire?
A broken chain?
Misaligned handlebars?
No brakes?
So if the pedals are doing or perseverance, what are some other values or
virtues that align with the different components?
o I.e. citizenship, integrity, honor, excellence, respect, or others

Expression of the Truth: Whole human beings are happy, successful human
beings! (15 Minutes)
o In a world that values doing (pedaling), what is the benefit of developing your
whole human being through virtue?
o Think of the bike- how does a properly tuned bike affect the quality of the
ride?
o How do these virtues contribute to your overall success and happiness as a
human being?
o Design A Metaphorical Bike Activity! (students have instructions on their
handouts)
o Directions: Using the bike outline below, design (with a partner) a fully-
functioning bike (human), using at least 5 different bicycle components as
virtues and explaining how those virtues contribute to the whole bike. The
bike is already started with perseverance as the pedals. You may continue
designing the bike with the ERA Pillars as your whole human components, or
you may focus on designing a bike using other values. Be sure to also
include a description of how that value/component contributes to the
success of the whole bicycle.
Citizenship is the route we take As part of a larger system, we are
simply one part of humanity. When we guide ourselves, we must
remember that we are also responsible for helping others along
their way, too.
Integrity is the back wheel This wheel does not pivot. It holds
steady and strong and helps us get to our destination with dignity
and grace.
Perseverance is the pedals Even when the road is tough, we must
keep pedaling. If we wish to see
Not necessary to share with students great sights at the top, we must
only share if students are stuckthis is push through our difficulties.
your resource! Honor is the seat We need to
hold ourselves up in honor. When we act honorably, we hold
ourselves in high regard and show pride by holding our heads high.
Excellence is the handle bars We are continuing to guide ourselves
to excellence in all that we do and say. We may take bumps and
turns, but we always strive toward excellence.
Respect is the front wheel When we hold respect at our front, we
move forward knowing that we are deserving of respect just as we
are generous in giving our respect. When respect drives us, we
make better decisions.

Application of the Truth: Discuss as a whole class. Some of these questions may
need to be questions students take with them to reflect on until the next
Inspiration team activity. (10-15 Minutes)
o Have students share bicycles- depending on time, you may choose to only have
a few groups share.
o Reconvene the discussion using these discussion questions (possibly after
lunch):
How are you developing the other virtues that you need to be successful?
What could you do to help develop those other virtues?
How can you help others to see the whole human you are as well as the
whole human he/she is?
