b. Method

2.1 Visually inspect the working rule. Take particular note of the condition of the following:

corners between the measuring scale and the datum edge,

damage to the datum edge,
damage to the scale edge(s)
Distortion or evidence of bending
Corrosion damage or wear that makes scale difficult to read.

Record findings in the box below and report any serious deficiency to the Quality Manager.

Condition of Criteria for Normal Use Acceptable (Yes/No) and comments

and limitations if applicable
Corners Rounding <0.5mm

Datum Edge Free from dents and burrs,

square to scale edge(s)
Scale Edges Free from dents and burrs

Distortion or bend Rule lies flat on glass plate

Scales Easily readable, no corrosion,

No obliteration / wear

2.2 Allow the reference rule and working rule to stabilize in the same temperature environment for
at least 3 hours before calibration.

2.3 The working rule and the reference rule shall be laid flat on a glass plate and aligned using
engineers square. Only the metric face shall be checked.

2.4 The accuracy of adjacent graduation lines on both are compared at 10, 25, 50mm and at
increments of 50mm thereafter. Use a low power magnifying glass to assist in the comparison
of the graduation marks. Estimate any deviations to the nearest 0.2mm

5 Uncertainty of Measurement

5.1 The Uncertainty of measurement has been assessed as 0.19mm for the calibration process.
.
5.2 For subsequent measurements using the rule, measuring to the nearest 0.5mm, the Uncertainty
of measurement is estimated as 0.7mm.

Details of these assessments are held by the Quality Manager.
