obtained maternal and neonatal
blood samples to measure serum
bilirubin levels, liver and kidney
function, parathyroid hormone
levels, and 25(OH)D status.

Here is what researchers found:
The average 25(OH)D levels of
newborns and their mothers were
not significantly associated with
bilirubin status.
The body mass index (BMI) of
mothers of jaundiced infants was
significantly higher than mothers
of healthy neonates (p = 0.041).
The average vitamin D status
among jaundiced newborns was 10
ng/ml lower compared to controls
(p < 0.05).
The researchers concluded,

significantly lower in jaundiced
cases compared with those
in the non-jaundiced healthy
groups, which may reveal an
association between indirect
hyperbilirubinemia and serum
vitamin D levels.
As always, it is important to state
the studys limitations. Due to the
observational design of the study,
researchers were unable to prove
a causal relationship between
vitamin D status and jaundice
among newborns. Furthermore,
the small sample size and short
study duration decreased the
strength of the findings.

Morro Bay Stacks

Morro Bay has many beautiful
areas to visit and several different
landmarks that can be recognized
by ground, air, and sea. The
landmark that made headlines in
the month of February includes
those three stacks that have
been part of the horizon for well
over 50 years. Dynegy officially
shut down the Morro Bay power
plant on February 4, 2014. Some
people were sad and some have
been waiting for years to see the
stacks taken down.
I taught in Morro Bay for many
years and the stacks were part
of the scenery on my drive to
work. I would take students on
a walking field trip down to the
Rock from Morro Elementary and
the kids would always stare up at
the stacks and someone would
inevitably wonder out loud about

the height of the stacks. The
stacks are about 450 feet tall, just
in case you were wondering.
Several years ago, I was lucky
enough to buy a personal
collection of photos that were
taken in 1953, when construction
of the power plant was well
underway. The story of the power
plant really started back in 1949,
when San Luis Obispo County
bought the area that was once a
Navy base. Yes, believe it or not,
Morro Bay once had a Naval Base
during World War II (but thats
another story). The area that the
county purchased was divided
into sections, and Pacific Gas and
Electric bought a portion of land
where the power plant would be
built. The area was about 140
acres and it was a perfect site
to build a steam electric plant.

The Victorian age is infamous
for its euphemisms. The mere
suggestion that people had body
parts or employed these body
parts was considered beyond
rude. Add Victorianism to the
prudism of 1800s America (and
beyond), and the euphemisms get
curiouser and curiouser.
A significant euphemism-creation
challenge revolved around the
discussion of pregnancy, which
- one might say - gave birth to
euphemistic brilliance.
Heres a short list of ways people
once avoided the apparent
indecency of pregnancy.

1200s, though it originally meant
collision. By the 1300s, though,
hurl acquired the meaning to
throw. Hurl is related to both
hurtle and hurry.
Lob appears to have come into
being as a noun during Old
English and originally referred
to something lumpish, heavy
or floppy. Its unclear how lob
morphed into a verb meaning to
throw slowly or gently in bowling
in the 1800s. Soon afterward, lob
was applied to the game of tennis
and the use of artillery.
Fling probably made its way to
English through Old Norse word
meaning to flog from a Proto-
Indo-European word meaning to
strike. This Proto-Indo-European
word also gave us the word
plague. It wasnt until the 1300s
that fling meant to throw.
In the 1560s, an Anglo-French
word made its way into English
as jetsam, the act of throwing
goods overboard to lighten a ships
load. By 1848. jetsam morphed
into jettison and meant to throw
overboard. Soon afterward,
it picked up the generalized

meaning to throw away.
The word pitch appeared with
uncertain parentage in the 1200s,
meaning to set upright. We see
this sense of the word today in
the phrase to pitch a tent. It seems
that to pitch a tent, one needed to
accurately strike the tent stakes.
By the late 1300s, that sense of
accuracy appears to have given
pitch its new meaning of to throw.
Pitch has any number of other
meanings worthy of another post.
Toss showed up in the 1400s
from an uncertain, though likely
Norwegian source. Originally, toss
referred to the sudden throwing
of an object. By the early 1700s,
one could toss a salad, and by the
late 1700s, one could toss a coin.
WE OURSELVES
Imagine a word used to refer
to oneself in the plural; sort of a
we-meets-ourselves word. Today,
etymologists write the word
*s(w)e-. This Proto-Indo-European
word gave birth to a fascinating
and diverse collection of words
that all relate back to the idea of
we/ourselves.
The word self came to us through
Proto-Germanic back when folks
were speaking Old English. Some
time during its stay in Germanic
languages it appears to have
lost its plural, inclusive nature.
Another word from this source
is secret, which appeared in
English in the 1300s, through Latin
words meaning private, set apart,
withdrawn, or on ones own.
Sullen made its way to English
through Anglo-French. Initially
meaning by oneself, alone (in
Middle English), sullen didnt
pick up the meaning morose
until the late 1300s. The word
swami appeared in English in the
1700s through Hindi. Swami, now
meaning Hindu religious teacher,
originally meant ones own or our
own master.
Sibling came to us via Proto-
Germanic and Old English.
Linguists consider sibling an
enlargement of the root *s(w)e.
And though they appear nothing
like their relatives, the words idiot
and idiom also came from *s(w)e-.

ALTERNATIVE FACTS
Alternative facts are getting
a lot of play these days. It
shouldnt surprise us that the
term alternative facts can be
alternatively understood, since
over time both words have had
varied meanings.
The adjective alternative grew out
of the Latin word alter, to change
or make something different. Its
origin is the Proto-Indo-European
word *al-, which meant beyond.
Alternative showed up in English
in the 1580s, meaning offering one
or the other of two.
When used in rhetoric during
the 1600s, alternative meant a
proposition of two statements,
the acceptance of one implying the
rejection of the other. By 1970,
alternative picked up the meaning
purporting to be a superior choice
to what is in general use.
The noun fact came from the
Medieval Latin word factum,
which translates literally to thing
done. As time passed, Medieval
Latin became Latin, and factum
came to mean event, occurrence,
deed, or achievement. When it
made its way to English as fact in
the 1530s, it meant anything done,
though in usage, the anything
done to which the word fact
referred was usually an evil deed.
