The government constituted the chanda committee under the chairmanship of A.K.CHANDA in
1964, when Mrs.Indra Gandhi was the Information and Broadcasting Minister. The committee
submitted its report in 1967. Directly recommendation was not accepted by the government.
However, the 1976 TV separated from AIR named DD (DOORDARSHAN). Another
recommendation they follow starting a commercial services. It begins with Vividh Bharati in
1967.

Verghese committee:-
The opposition parties were demanding constantly that AIR and Doordarshan should be made
free from government control. But the government never agreed. In fact, then the Prime Minister
Indra Gandhi used to say that AIR is a government organization and it will be made use of for
government purposes. But in 1977, Janta Party the first non-congress government at the centre
formed. It was committed to give autonomy to the powerful media of AIR and DD.
The chairman of this committee was the eminent journalist B.G.VERGHESE. The committee
submitted their report in 24 Feb 1978. The bill was introduce in Lok Sabha but before the
passage of the bill the government fell.
Recommendations:-
Establish a national broadcasting trust by an act of parliament.
President, Lokpal and Chief Justice of SC will select the chairman and their members.
AIR was delinked from DD and allowed to take off on its own in April 1976. Now AIR the
opportunity to grow on its own. FM services were stared first from Madras and then form
Jallandhar and other cities.
News bulletin every hour was introduce by mid 80s, phone in programme in Pune, Delhi and
other cities were experimented during the early 1990s. A landmark achievement was the
launched of the SKY RADIO channel on April 1, 1994. Which enable subscribers to receive 20
radio channels via satellite on their FM receivers.
