Background:
The proposal of establishment of AIIA at New Delhi has emanated from the then Honble
Prime Ministers (Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee) declaration to set up a state-of-the art
National Ayurveda Hospital at the ceremonial function of Vaidya Ram Narayan Sharma
Memorial Award Distribution organized on 5th May 2000 under the aegis of All India
Ayurveda Congress. Department of AYUSH spearheaded the proposal that after a series
of discussion culminated in to setting up a Centre of Excellence of Ayurveda with
postgraduate education, health care and research facilities. The Delhi Development
Authority has allotted about eleven acres of land near Sarita Vihar on Delhi-Mathura
Road for the proposed institute. Consequent upon grant of in-principle approval of the
Finance Ministry in 2003, the Honble Vice President of India Shri. Bhairon Singh
Shekhawat laid down the foundation stone on 14th February 2004. The Government of
India has considered the proposal and recommended in-principle to develop the institute
focused on R&D, safety evaluation and quality standards of Ayurveda medicines.
Introduction:
The All India Institute of Ayurveda is conceived as an Apex Institute for Ayurveda. It
aims at bringing a synergy between Traditional Wisdom of Ayurveda and Modern tools
and technology. The institute would offer postgraduate and doctoral courses in various
disciplines of Ayurveda and will focus on fundamental research of Ayurveda, drug
development, standardization, quality control, safety evaluation and scientific validation
of Ayurvedic medicine. It will have a 200 bed referral hospital for facilitating clinical
research. Once fully established, the Institute will have 25 Specialty Departments and 12
clinics with 8 inter-disciplinary research laboratories wherein 120 Scholars will have
access for PG & Ph.D programs every year. The hospital will be equipped with state of
the art modern diagnostic tools and techniques which will be used in teaching, training
and research. The patient care will be done primarily through Ayurveda of tertiary level.
This institute shall also have an international collaborative centre for global promotion
and research in Ayurveda.

Objectives:

1. To set up benchmarks of Postgraduate and Post-Doctoral Education (MD/Ph.D.)


in Ayurveda and to Promote Ayurveda at National and International Level.

2. To undertake interdisciplinary research primarily focused on validation of


fundamental principles of Ayurveda using modern tools and technology.

3. Standardization and Quality control of Ayurveda Drugs and Drug


development.

4. To establish a State-of-art tertiary care hospital with facilities for clinical research.

5. Create standards for education and research at its highest level so that other
institutes can opt as a model

6. To bring a synergy between ancient wisdom of Ayurveda and advantages of


modern diagnostics, technology and management

7. To promote collaborative research with various R&D institutions at national &


international level institutes

8. To function as a model center for international collaboration

Out Patient Services (w.e.f 26.10.2010):


Shri S. Gandhiselvan, Honble Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare
inaugurated the Out Patient Services at All India Institute of Ayurveda on the 26th
October, 2010. Smt. S. Jalaja, Secretary, Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health &
Family Welfare was the guest of honor during the inauguration function.

The following Out Patient services are now being offered in a temporary hutment block
in the premises under national campaigns on Ayurveda under the Department of
AYUSH: 1. Kaya chikitsa (General Medicine) 2.Prasuti & Stree Rog (Obstetrics &
Gynaecology) 3. Bal Rog (Pediatrics) 4.Shalakya Tantra (Eye & ENT) 5. Shalya Tantra
(General Surgery) 6. Ksharsutra Therapy and 7. Vikriti Vigyan (Pathology).

As per the targets, the All India Institute of Ayurveda would be functional by March,
2012.
