ABSTRACT

The internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, buildings and other
itemsembedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity that
enable these objects to collect and exchange data. "Things", in the IoT sense, can refer to a wide
variety of devices such as street light. Smart street lighting system is the backbone for IoT in the
city.
A significant part of energy consumed today worldwide is by street lighting. Studies show 18-
38% of energy bill goes toward street lighting globally and therefore this is one area on which it
is imperative to focus on. Most urban and semi-urban cities and towns are still using a
combination of fluorescent, CFL, high pressure sodium lamps or metal halide bulbs, which are
incapable to meet area-wise lighting needs. Usually, the street lights stay on well past sunrise.
This happens because the lights are switched-off based on a particular pre-decided time rather
than based the rise time of sun, on season and location of the city. There is a need for devising a
well thought out way to prevent wastage of electricity. The solution to this problem is Automatic
Street Light Control System using LDR (Light Dependent Resistor), which automatically
switches off lights when sunlight fall on it.
Keywords: Internet of Things (IoT), smart street lighting system, wastage of electricity, Light
dependent register.

INTRODUCTION
A Street light is a raised source of light on the edge of a road or walkway, which is turned on or
lit at a certain time every night. Major advantages of street lighting includes: prevention of
accidents and increase in safety.
A number of street light control systems have been developed to monitor, which includes RF
modules and GSM based systems. Various protocols have been developed as well as compatible
hardware for most types of lighting. Wireless, remote control and monitoring of street lights can
save energy, enhance public safety, reduce light pollution, reduce maintenance costs, and fixture
health reporting to municipalities, states and other users and a centralized command system can
send astronomic time based instructions to individual or groups of street lighting.
The proposed project is to develop an efficient and Smart Street Lighting System which is
capable of giving status of sunlight to the control unit which further can switch on or off or dim
the street lights according to the needs. The purpose of the project is to save electricity wastage
in urban area by monitoring the environmental conditions. An additional important feature of the
system is that it is also capable of identifying any faulty node and immediately reporting to the
control unit for further course of actions.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Most cities and towns are still using a combination of fluorescent, CFL, high pressure sodium
lamps or metal halide bulbs, which are incapable to meet area-wise lighting needs and stay on
well past sunrise. This happens because the lights are switched-off based on a particular pre-
decided time.

LITERATURE REVIEW
The demand for todays world is automation in everything. Basically automation is a technique,
method, or system of operating or controlling a process by electronic devices with reducing
human involvement to a minimum. The fundamental of building an automation system is
increasing day-by-day with numerous benefits. Similarly the system can be developed on IoT
grant to people and things to be connected Any-time, anyplace, with anyone, ideally using any
network and any service.
Due to the increase for environmental concerns, lighting control systems will play an important
role in the reduction of energy consumption of the lighting without impeding comfort
goals. The single most important parameter to consider when assessing the impacts of
technical systems on the environment. Energy related emissions are responsible for
approximately 80% of air emissions (IEA 2001), and central to the most serious global
environmental impacts and hazards, including climate change, acid deposition, smog and
particulates. Thus its energy saving potential is often neglected. According to an IEA study
(IEA 2006), global grid based electricity consumption for lighting was about 2650 TWh in
2005, which was an equivalent of 19% of total global electricity consumption. Public lighting in
streets, tunnels, city centers, ports and squares etc. can account for about 30% of the urban
energy consumption. And the maintenance costs are very high. India is facing a huge energy
crisis which has to be addressed to at the earliest using devices that are energy efficient. Based
on environmental and economic factors, cities need smart energy management systems urgently
for energy saving, maintenance costs reduction and CO2 emission reduction.

OBJECTIVE
The objective of the proposed project IOT based Street Light Management System is to
develop an Efficient and Smart Street Lighting System which is capable of giving status of
sunlight to the control unit which further can switch on or off or dim the street lights according to
the needs.

METHODOLOGY
PHASE I: FEASIBILITY STUDY
In the first phase of our project IOT based Street Light Management System, we focus on
feasibility study which includes finding all the functions and features which can be embedded
with a street light for the development of our project. We also analyze the problem statement.
PHASE II: DESIGN PROCESS
Based on our understanding on various case studies and research papers we go for UML
designing for our project. Further we develop the following:
Flowcharts
Data Flow Diagrams
Algorithms
ER Diagrams
Process Flow Diagrams
Class Diagrams
We will use some of these UML diagrams to visualize the design of our system.
PHASE III: DEVELOPMENT & CODING
Further coding will be done on android studio by implementing different algorithms to minimize
the complexity of our project. As we have found various functions which can be performed by a
street light, now we will try to embed those functions which will help us in maintaining the street
lights and minimizing the power consumption.
