Tools to make a simple page

You just need a text editor (eg Microsoft Notepad that comes with Windows), a br
owser ("browser") and possibly FTP program (more on that later).

With respect to the Web browser if you're reading this page on your computer, yo
u already have it. The most common browsers are Microsoft Exporer (Explorer) and
Netcape (the browser).

If you are using images, you need a software that allows you to edit photos and
drawings. I've included a list

are three ways to make a web page:

The easiest way: using the resources it provides you with your web hosting compa
ny. For example Tripod and Geocities have tools to help you make your page witho
ut having to know HTML.

You can use an HTML editor. This helps a lot: it's like to write in your word pr
ocessor, while the program converts the format you code without worry. One of th
e most popular HTML editors is Microsoft's Front Page. The disadvantage is that
you lose a little control on the page, because sometimes these editors are rigid
.

Using HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). It's easier than it seems. This language
uses "tags" to tell the browser how to interpret the commands. Even if it's a l
ittle complicated at first, in the long run is the most convenient. Make your HT
ML page will allow you the flexibility to design it exactly as you want.

scellaneous Tips When you save your documents ...

Use the extension "html" (or "htm" if you are running Windows 3.x) For example:
mypagina.html

Save as text. If you use a word processor such as Word or Word Perfect, it is im
portant to remember this detail, otherwise the processor will save your document
with your own extension (eg. Doc) and servers may not recognize it.

Do not use capital letters or accents and do not leave spaces between words for
documents. Some operating systems are strict in terms of characters used.

It is convenient to put names to the pages that represent your content. You may
remember now that the page 01 is your introduction, but when you add more pages
this system will become difficult to manterner. For example: "arbol_genealogico.
html" or "enlaces.htm" tells you immediately what it contains every page, not so
"03_xw.html" or "pp10.htm"

You must save the page, ie your home, such as "index.html" (or "index.htm"). Thi
s is recognized as the servers, which usually are scheduled to perform "index.ht
ml" as the cover page.
[Top of this page] What Every page should have Think of your page like a book. Y
ou seem rare to find a book without a title, author's name and date of publicati
on index. Yet there are many Web pages that do not have such data. Be sure to in
clude the following:

You've seen many sites title start saying "Welcome to my page, blah, blah, blah
.." and after reading a couple of paragraphs you are not yet clear which is the
subject of the page. Do not make that mistake. Each page must have a title that
clearly indicates what it is.

Navigation bar, or a list of all the pages of your site, with their respective l
inks. This list should be in all your pages have the same format and be in the s
ame place (usually the left, or above). This simplifies the search for informati
on and links to all pages giving coherence.

Your name and e-mail address so that visitors can contact you. It seems obvious,
but you will have seen that there are many well designed pages that do not say
who the author and do not give the opportunity to contact him or her.

Date of last update.
This is not crucial, but it is advisable. What is important is that if you add a
hit counter to your page, you must indicate the date you started counting. If a
page says "83459999 visits" but does not say much since, not really much use. [
Top of this page] Things you should avoid

Huge images are slow in coming. Not only that occupy much space, but the visitor
s lose interest if it takes too long to see the page. If you really want to use
large images, try not to put them at the top. In this way, the visitor may be re
ading something while it loads the image.

If you decide to use animated images, do not use more than two per page. They ar
e very nice but distract attention from seeking information on the page. The sam
e with sound: the first time is fun, then it becomes an irritant.

As for details of your family, avoid include dates of birth of the living relati
ves unless they will give their consent.
