2nd Initiation
New privacy settings by end of May 2010
Facebook has simplified revised by the end of May 2010, according to several pro
tests by different sides of the possibilities of privacy preferences. The contro
l of privacy settings has been simplified with the new features, various possibl
e sets can be made with one click. The following guide shows, in my view a meani
ngful approach to protecting privacy.
Opt-out as standard
The protection of privacy within Facebook is increasingly becoming the responsib
ility of the user, and many settings are configured for the intrusion, that info
rmation is generally available to the public without interference by the user an
d must be specifically prohibited by the user (opt-out) ..
Facebook privacy in changing times
Matt McKeon recently the changes in privacy on Facebook over time shown:
The view of the pictures and the detailed sequence 2005 - 2010 are in my blog, "
Facebook: The development of visualization of privacy" can be seen.
Tips to protect privacy
On the following pages, I explain the privacy settings of Facebook, and give var
ious recommendations about the protection of privacy. These recommendations are
my subjective view, depending on the user, intended use and friends can make oth
er adjustments sense.
Important!
Facebook offers several ways to protect privacy, but every shot is more importan
t than the rational use of Facebook, never publish content that you have not pub
lished publicly in doubt want. Imagine if in doubt before publication always the
question: "Can I stand behind this publication, if it were visible in the newsp
aper tomorrow?"

3rd Friends List
Friends Lists understand and apply
A central and important point in connection with the privacy settings are the fr
iends lists. The configuration of the friends list is different depending on the
size of Facebook friends a lot of time,€but brings many benefits and simplifies
many functions and settings in Facebook. Facebook describes the friends lists a
s follows:
Friends lists allow you to assign your own private friends groups. For example,
you can create a friends list of your friends who meet weekly in a book club. Yo
u can find friends lists for all your organizational needs created which allow y
ou to sort your friends into groups quickly view and send messages to your lists
.
The following points must be understood in the context of friends lists: A fri
end can be added to multiple friends lists friends lists such as tags used are
friends lists, specific privacy setting assigned to be the most used friends
lists, privacy experts call "Friends," " family "and" business ". However, the n
umber of lists and their designation and the combination is optional. The most i
mportant thing is to be understood that for the default privacy setting is alway
s the most restrictive setting is used. An example: My friend John is someone wh
o I know from work, but also in the leisure time to spend with him. I add him to
the friends list "BIS" and "add friends". If my "BIZ" friends photos in which I
was not able to see marked John will also not be able to see these photos. For
me, I made the friends list (Figure 1 friends list). The menu item "Friends" and
"pages" of Facebook automatically provided. "Friends" shows on all connections,
"Pages" shows all my Facebook pages, with which I am noted as a fan. The follow
ing lists of which I have created yourself, "BIS" are friends with whom I have t
o do primarily for business, "FAN" had I added all of Facebook Pages. This list
can be added at will.

Create friends lists
A new friends list I create create by clicking on "Create New List" in the upper
central area (Figure 2 friends list)
Figure 2 friends list Create
Then opens a new window (Figure 3 friends list to create / assign friends). In t
he upper left can I enter for the new list a name (eg my friends). Just below on
the right side I can look for friends by name or in the list, including friends
I would like to add to the list, select. To finish the preparation, I click dow
n on "Create list". I repeat this process for each list to be established.
Figure 3 friends list, create / assign friends
Add to friends friends lists
There are already friends lists, I can let the menu item "Friends" all my friend
s in alphabetical order and directly to one or more friends list (s) Add (Figure
4 friends assign to friends lists).
Assign Figure 4 friends to friends list
In addition to the profile one option appears (Figure 5 select friends lists), w
here I can choose which list to be added to my friend. In this method, I repeat
the process several times if I add a friend several friends lists or would like
to remove.

General
The settings for privacy can be (more or less) centrally managed:

Standard settings
Facebook is for the conversion in May 2010 predefined "standard settings availab
le, which can be easily applied. The options are: All Friends of Friends Onl
y Friends The recommended default Custom fast and easy way to provide priv
acy set, but in my opinion are not optimal. All
Figure 9 default "All"
If set to "All" are in principle all the information from the profile freely ava
ilable. From the perspective of data and privacy protection is strongly discoura
ged by this setting.

Individualization with the help of friends lists
Most of the settings within the Privacy settings can be customized in the same w
ay. Facebook knows basically three basic settings.
Privacy Figure 14 - Levels
In addition to the three basic settings within the range of "Friends" further su
bdivisions are made. Now if I want to set as example, the settings to "biography
", I click on the button in this box (Figure 15 adaptation of the visibility) an
d then get the choices (Figure 16 choices visibility).
Figure 15 Adjustment of visibility
Figure 16 choices visibility
By default, I get to the options (Figure 16 choices visibility) of the following
: All For anyone on Facebook visible friends of friends to all my friends an
d their friends visible only friends for all my friends are visible Custom I
ndividual visibility Choose according to my specifications I am here "Custom", f
urther settings of visibility possible (Figure 16 choices visibility), then from
here the previously defined lists of friends come into play. Basically I can fo
r example set that all my friends can see my data. Under "The following people h
ide from" I can now explicitly set to see which people or friends lists this inf
ormation shall not (a process of elimination). In the example in (Figure 17 indi
vidual privacy "just friends with a process of elimination") may all my friends
see the note, but friends do not belong to your friends list "BIZ". Possible but
also the visibility only to certain people without friends lists (Figure 18 ind
ividual privacy "Certain Persons") or only for me would be set (Figure 19 Indivi
dual privacy "only I").

6th Tips and recommendations
Make you invisible to the Facebook search
Facebook distinguishes between two search settings: Search Search within Fac
ebook outside of Facebook (see "make yourself invisible to Google & Co.) http://
www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=privacy account -> privacy settings -> General In
formation
Figure 38 privacy - Facebook Search Results
The setting you can here (Figure 38 select privacy - Facebook search results) no
w as desired. If you wish a restriction, I recommend you set to "just friends" t
o vote, so at least your friends can use the search to go to your profile. I per
sonally do not function on these cabinets.
Make you invisible to Google & Co.
Much more sense it makes that you set Facebook so that your profile for Google a
nd Co. is not visible. : Http://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=privacy account -
> privacy settings -> applications and websites
Figure 39 Privacy - Public Search Results
If you wish not a public search result (invisible to Google & Co.) You have to l
et the "off" (Figure 39 privacy - public results).

Photo-Tag Flag avoid
Many Facebook users are now more intelligent about the privacy protection, but w
e read repeatedly of broken relationships, and other negative news, such as redu
ndancies or problems in finding a job in connection with the photo-tagging. One
of the biggest dangers within Facebook is that you can be met on komprimitierend
en photos - you can indeed determine themselves which photos you upload searched
, but no influence on what your friends are uploading. Basically, each of your F
acebook friends out on a screen fitted with a tag. Who can see your pictures met
, but you can determine yourself.
Figure 40 Example of a negative image met

tom Settings
Figure 41 privacy - photos and videos in which I am markeiert
I suggest here, the setting made so as not only see just friends, business conta
cts but not the pictures and videos, upon which You have been marked can. Also a
good opportunity here would be the restriction to be chosen so that only you yo
urself can just see these pictures.
Photo albums protect
Compromising photographs are as already mentioned earlier, a major danger in Fac
ebook. It is very important that you decide well and distinguish to whom You wil
l provide insight into what the photo album.€The Facebook privacy settings to al
low different settings for each photo album. What "security level" you use is, o
f course you leave yourself a restriction ought to "just friends; Except BIZ" Bu
t you at least choose private photos. To protect your photo albums, two differen
t paths with the same effects are available: Option 1: http://www.facebook.com/p
rivacy/?view=photos account -> privacy settings -> Custom Einsteillungen
Figure 42 privacy - Photo Albums I
Edit After clicking on "Settings" (Figure 42 privacy - photo albums I) will be d

ings (Figure 43 privacy - photo albums II).

Figure 43 privacy - Photo Albums II
Option 2: The settings of the visibility of an album can be made directly in the
album. To do this the album you want to open. Then click on "Edit Photos" and g
o on the "Edit Info". Below the description of privacy is shown (Figure 44 priva
te photo albums III).

Avoid "no longer in a relationship" effect
Allfacebook.com has published some time ago an interesting article which reporte
d on the phenomenon which was observed when women have changed their relationshi
p status from "in a relationship" to "Single". Usually in this context are frequ
ent posts on the Board of possible new potential partner to read. Whether you do
your relationship status, and changes in relationship status want to show, you
have to decide for yourself. I personally amused me regularly if I ever-changing
relationship status from "in a relationship" to "it is difficult" to "single" s
ee. If You feel that your relationship status concerns only you something you ca
n do this naturally hide from the public. http://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=

Privacy Figure 45 - Relations
I have for me, the setting chosen so that friends, but not professional contacts
, to view information about my relationship.
Control access to what information Facebook applications can
The risk that any Facebook applications publish stories without verification is
no longer available. However, you should check good to know what information Fac
ebook applications over you / may. When you install applications, it is called b
y default "is to resort to information which you have shared with anyone or for
anyone visible. Publicly available information is basically your name, profile p
icture, your gender, your network. Your friends can also disseminate information
about you. An example would be for example a greeting card to your friends invi
ting application automatically send you a birthday card. Facebook allows you to
set which information is available about you from applications of your friends:

Avoiding embarrassing Wall Posts
If you have celebrated the night before a fairly strong party, which is perhaps
a point that everyone should know not / should. Your friends use Facebook, perha
ps not in a professional environment and have less problems with a status messag
e, as if your business friends would read it. For this reason you should make pr
ovision, not so that all information is accessible to all. There are again two p
ossible settings.€Option 1 You can use the privacy settings directly from the st
atus update. Writing as usual your status message (Figure 49 Status Update).
Figure 49 Status Update
Click then on the left of the safety lock button parts. In the following window
(Figure 50 Status Update - individual privacy) you can again make the usual sett
