Acids and bases are two types of compounds found in everyday life. Both occur
naturally as well as in man-made compounds. They are opposites in terms of their uses
and their physical and chemical properties, and, when combined, effectively neutralize
each another. Many of the weaker acids and bases are in things we use every day,
even foods, but in the case of stronger compounds, their uses tend to be industrial only.
The word "acid" comes directly from the Latin word for sour, "acere." Acids are therefore
very sour-tasting compounds. Some well-known acids that taste very sour include
lemons and vinegar.
Common Acids
Hydrochloric acid
Sulphuric acid
Stomach juice
Lemons
Vinegar
Apples
Oranges
Grapes
Sour milk
White bread
Fresh milk
Strong acids are used to remove rust from metal, remove calcium carbonate from
kettles and plumbing fixtures, and etch glass.
Acids can be found in many substances, including food. Fruits contain an acid
called citric acid and vinegar contains acetic acid. These acids like many others
are everyday acids
.
Apart from these there are also laboratory acids, some include; hydrochloric acid,
sulphuric acid and nitric acid.
Citric acid is used for food preservation.
