Roanoke Introduction

1584. Explorers Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe were the first
known Europeans to set eyes on the island (Happened to Roanoke;
Ridenour & Roanoke Voyages). Just one year later Queen Elizabeth gave
Sir Walter Raleigh permission to colonize it (Ridenour). They arrived in
1585, just off the coast of present day North Carolina (Pruitt). With John
White as their leader, they started the first colony of Roanoke (Ridenour;
Pruitt). The colonists were not prepared, so John White left for Britain for
supplies. (Ridenour; Pruitt). The colonists badly needed supplies, but
because of the war with Spain, he did not return for three years (Pruitt).
When he did return, all he found were two clues (Pruitt). A tree with the
word CRO scratched into it, and a post with CROATOAN carved into it
(Pruitt). So what really happened to the colonists in Roanoke?

King Tuts Curse Introduction

On November 4, 1922, Howard Carter and his fifty workmen discovered a
step cut into a rock that was hidden by debris leftover from another tomb
(Archeology; UnMuseum) . This led to a doorway with the name
Tutankhamun all over it literally, his name was on the door of his tomb and it was
still sealed shut (UnMuseum). The tomb was buried in the Valley of Kings,
Egypt, and when Carter sent a letter to Lord Carnarvon his boss, Carnarvon came
over right away to check out the tomb (Entrance). In 1891 when Carter went to
Egypt to try to find his tomb the excavation process took several years and when
they found it it was 1922 (Entrance). In later years, there were many mysterious
deaths of the people who discovered the tomb but there was no curse found inside
(Cavendish). Is this a coincidence? Is King Tut really good at keeping his curse
hidden from people? Did he want people to feel what death feels like?
Roanoke Introduction

Its 1590 and you are Sir Walter Raleigh checking back on the
colonists that you sent out three years ago to settle on Roanoke Island
(now known as the Outer Banks, off the coast of North Carolina)
(Pruitt ; Roanoke). However, when you get there everyone is gone...
You look around and all you see is the word CROATOAN carved
into a nearby tree. Have they had an attack from the local Natives,
the Croatans (Stevens; Roanoke & Basu)? Could they possibly have
gone to Croatoan Island for more supplies (Stevens ;Roanoke)?
You decide to send people out on the island to look for them, but
when they come back they say there was no sign of them at all
(Stevens; Roanoke)... Where have they gone? Are they even alive?
How could 100 settlers just vanish (Roanoke)? These questions
have fueled one of the biggest disappearing acts ever...the lost
colony of Roanoke.
