INTRODUCTION

Qualied Persons NOTICE

maintenance of overhead electric power distribution equipment along with associated

These instructions are intended only for such qualified persons. They are not
intended to be a substitute for adequate training and experience in safety procedures
for this type of equipment.

Proper Application
CAUTION
Power fuses must only be used for specic fusing applications that are within the
ratings of the fuse selected. Power fuse ratings are listed on a ratings label attached
to the fuse.

Warranty The warranty and/or obligations described in S&Cs standard conditions of sale, as set
forth in Price Sheet 150, plus any special warranty provisions, as set forth in the applicable
product-line specication bulletin, are exclusive. The remedies provided in the former for
breach of these warranties shall constitute immediate purchasers or end users exclusive
remedy and a fulllment of all sellers liability. In no event shall sellers liability to immediate
purchaser or end user exceed the price of the specic product which gives rise to immediate

GENERAL

CAUTION
The equipment covered by this publication must be selected for a specific application
and it must be installed, operated, and maintained by qualified persons who are
thoroughly trained and who understand any hazards that may be involved. This
publication is written only for such qualified persons and is not intended to be a
substitute for adequate training and experience in safety procedures for this type
of equipment.

The following instructions cover installation, replacement, and maintenance of SMU-

20 Fuse Units used with indoor distribution SM-20, SML-20, and SME-20 Mountings, or
with outdoor distribution SMD-20 Mountings. Note that appropriate end ttings must be
attached to the fuse unit before it can be installed in a mounting. Note further that, while
the SMU-20 Fuse Unit can be installed in each of the aforementioned mountings, the end
ttings for use in an SMD-20 Mounting are dissimilar and not interchangeable with the end
ttings for use in SM-20 or SML-20 Mountings, and, moreover, that end ttings for use in an
SME-20 mounting are not interchangeable with end ttings for SMD-20, SM-20, or SML-20
mountings. See Figure 1, pages 2 and 3, and Figure 2, page 5.

NOTICE
S&C SMU-20 Fuse Units have silver or nickel-chrome fusible elements that are
nondamageable; consequently, there is no need to replace unblown companion fuses
on suspicion of damage following a fuse operation.

 PRECAUTIONS
1. Do not leave fuse units installed in SMD-20 Outdoor Distribution Mountings
hanging open. Once closed in, the fuse units will not be damaged by rain or high
humidity. However, the watertightness of the exhaust end of the fuse units cannot be
guaranteed; therefore, as a precaution, fuse units should not be left hanging open. Any
rain or snow that might enter could affect the solid-materials lining. Moreover, when in
storage, these fuse units should be protected from excessive moisture.
2. Do not remove the fuse unit from its carton until ready to use.
3. Handle fuse units with caredo not drop or throw.
4. Do not place hand over the upper seal of the fuse unit when handling. (There is the
remote possibility that the current-responsive section of the fuse unit may have been
weakened in shipping or handling. As a result, the spring-loaded actuating pin may be
unpredictably released and driven forcibly through the upper seal.)
5. Do not disturb the red cap (rain shield) at the lower end of the fuse unit if the fuse unit
is to be installed in an SMD-20 mounting. If the fuse unit is to be installed in an SM-20,
SML-20, or SME-20 mounting, remove the red cap just prior to installing the fuse-unit
end ttings.

SM-20, SML-20, or Attach fuse-unit end ttings as follows:

SME-20 Mountings 1. The lower end tting must be attached rst. Unscrew and discard the red cap located
on the lower end of the fuse unit. Next, slip the lower end tting over the upper end
of the fuse unit and slide it down until the locating slot (inside the lower end tting) is
aligned with the locating pin on the lower ferrule. Seat the lower end tting against the
shoulder of the lower ferrule. Then, thread the Silencer onto the lower end tting and
screw it on rmly. The nal fractional turn should be made with a bar or wrench handle
applied to the base of the Silencer.
2. Slip the upper end tting over the fuse unit. Align the locating pin (inside the upper end
tting) with the locating slot in the fuse unit and seat the upper end tting rmly against
the upper end of the fuse unit. Tighten the clamp screw rmly.

a NOTE ON HANDLING: The current-design upper end fitting for use in SM-20
Silencer and SML-20 Power Fuses employs a free-floating blown-fuse indicator which
can move (by force of gravity) into the blown-fuse position should the fuse
be inverted during handling. Fuse condition can be verified by returning the
fuse to the upright position. If the fuse is blown, the indicator will remain in the
extended (projecting) position.

3. Unused Fuse-Unit End Fittings: A coating of No-Ox-Id
A Special oxidation-inhibiting grease has been fac-
tory-applied to the contact rod at the factory. Verify the
presence of this oxidation-inhibiting grease, and that it is
still free of contaminants. If necessary, clean the contact
rod with a nontoxic, nonammable solvent and apply a
coating of No-Ox Id A Special grease (available from
Sanchem Incorporatedd), or similar nonmetallic-ller
oxidation-inhibiting grease.

INSTALLATION (FUSING)
Reused Fuse-Unit End Fittings: Remove the exist-
ing coating of oxidation-inhibiting grease, and dirt, from
the contact using a nontoxic, nonammable solvent.
Inspect the contact for evidence of pitting. If pitting has
occurred, le down any projections, abrade the surface
until smooth with an abrasive cloth or scratch brush, and
wipe clean. Apply a new coating of No-Ox-Id A Special
grease, or similar nonmetallic-ller oxidation-inhibiting
grease, to the contact rod. If the contact has been burned,
the contact and its mating contact should be replaced.

SMD-20 Attach fuse-unit end ttings as follows:

Mountings 1. The lower end tting must be attached rst. Slip the lower end tting over the upper
end of the fuse unit and slide it down until the locating slot (inside the lower end tting)
seats on the locating pin on the lower ferrule. Next, back off the locknut on the clamp
screw and tighten the clamp screw rmly; secure it with the locknut.
2. Slip the upper end tting over the fuse unit. Align the locating pin (inside the upper end
tting) with the locating slot in the fuse unit and seat the upper end tting rmly against
the upper end of the fuse unit. Tighten the clamp screw rmly.
3. Adhere to the following instructions which appear on the bottom of the red cap (rain
shield) located on the lower end of the fuse unit: Do not disturb this cap if fuse is to
be used outdoors (overhead). As a point of information, this cap protects the fuse unit
from water entry.
4. Unused Fuse-Unit End Fittings: A coating of No-Ox-Id A Special oxidation-inhibiting
grease has been factory-applied to the current-carrying contact surface at the factory.
Verify the presence of this oxidation-inhibiting grease, and that it is still free of contami-
nants. If necessary, clean the contact surface with a nontoxic, nonammable solvent and
apply a coating of No-Ox Id A Special grease (available from Sanchem Incorporatedd),
or similar nonmetallic-ller oxidation-inhibiting grease.
Reused Fuse-Unit End Fittings: Remove the existing coating of oxidation-inhibiting
grease, and dirt, from the current-carrying contact surfaces of the upper end tting and
the lower end tting, using a nontoxic, nonammable solvent. Inspect these surfaces for
evidence of pitting. If pitting has occurred, le down any projections, abrade the surface
until smooth with an abrasive cloth or scratch brush, and wipe clean. Apply a new coating
of No-Ox-Id A Special grease, or similar nonmetallic-ller oxidation-inhibiting grease,
to the current-carrying contact surfaces. If the contact has been burned, the contact and
its mating contact should be replaced.

REPLACEMENT (RE-FUSING)

SM-20, SML-20, When the fuse operates, the fuse unit does not swing open but the blown-fuse indicator
or SME-20 moves to the extended position, providing visual evidence that the fuse unit is blown. Move
Mountings the fuse unit to the open position and then remove it from the mounting.

NOTICE
SM-20 and SME-20 Mountings do not incorporate a live-switching device. Hence, an
unblown SMU-20 Fuse Unit in such mountings must not be moved to the open position
without rst opening a series interrupting and isolating switch, or load-break elbow.

Loosen the upper-end fitting clamp screw, and pry the clamp apart slightly using a screw-
driver. Slide the upper end fitting off the upper end of the fuse unit. Then unscrew and
remove the Silencer. Slide the lower end fitting off the upper end of the fuse unit.
Next, attach the end fittings and Silencer to a new fuse unit, following the instructions
given on page 2 and illustrated in Figure 1, pages 2 and 3. A blown fuse unit cannot be
salvaged. Discard it.
To avoid delay due to transferring of end fittings, spare sets of end fittings and Silenc-
ers may be kept on hand for attachment to new fuse units before re-fusing is to be per-
formed

SMD-20 When the fuse operates, the fuse unit swings to the open position. Remove it from the
Mountings mounting, using a universal pole equipped with a suitable fuse-handling attachment.
Examine the end of the fuse unit to determine that the actuating pin (see Figure 2) extends
through the upper seal indicating that the fuse unit is blown.
Loosen the upper- and lower-end-fitting clamp screws (pry the upper-end-fitting clamp
apart slightly using a screwdriver), and slide both end fittings off the upper end of the fuse
unit.
Next, attach the end fittings to a new fuse unit, following the instructions given on page
4 and illustrated in Figure 2, page 5. A blown fuse unit cannot be salvaged. Discard it.
To avoid delay due to transferring of end fittings, spare sets of end fittings may be kept
on hand for attachment to new fuse units before re-fusing is to be performed.
When closing an SMD-20 Power Fuse, insert the prong of the hookstick into the pull-ring
on the fuse-unit upper end fitting and swing the fuse unit to within approximately 45 of the
fully closed position. Then, while looking away, fully close the fuse using a vigorous thrust.
Carefully disengage the hookstick, taking care to avoid opening the fuse.

 REFINISHING RECOMMENDATION

Fuse Units The exterior nish of the fuse-unit tubes should be inspected periodically for weather
Installed in damage. If the nish has become discontinuous or if deep scratches are evident, the tube
SMD-20 should be resurfaced using the Fuse-Unit Recoating Kit available from the factory. This
kit contains two components: a -pint can of Light Gray Enamel 9611 and a -pint can of
Mountings
Hardener 2191; this kit is sufcient for two coats for ten fuse units. A 1-pint can of thinner
is also available for use with this kit (ordered separately).
Before resurfacing, sand off the old finish with No. 1 sandpaper. Smooth surface with
No. 0 sandpaper. Remove any oil or grease with a nontoxic, nonflammable solvent and
allow to dry. Do not immerse the fuse unit in solvent.
Mix together only the amount of enamel and hardener immediately needed. Add thinner
as required.
Spray or brush coat the fuse-unit tube, taking care not to coat the fuse-tube ferrules.
Allow the tube to air dry for several minutes, then apply a second coat. Air dry for several
minutes after applying the second coat. DO NOT BAKE FINISH.
Discard any mixed finish not used
