time now to check the contents of your package. If your package is not complete,
package contact your software dealer or supplier.

Discs Your Crane Beam package contains a CD.

System This section describes the hardware, system software, memory and disc space
requirements that your computer needs in order to run Crane Beam.
requirements

Hardware Crane Beam requires a computer capable of running Microsoft Windows 1.

System software You must have Windows installed and running on your computer to install and
use Crane Beam.

Memory Crane Beam needs 32 MB of RAM although 64 MB is preferable.

Disc space Crane Beam requires a minimum of 5 MB of available hard disc space.

What next ? For those of you who like reading, the following covers all parts of Crane Beam in
depth. Alternatively you may just want to start using Crane Beam and only use the
documentation when you have specific questions.
1. Either Microsoft Windows 98 (or higher) or Microsoft Windows NT Version 4.0 (or
higher). All versions are referred to by the term Windows. Crane Beam may not run correctly on
Windows emulators.
Chapter 2 : Getting Started : 14

Note No matter what your preference is, please remember that

extensive on-line help is available when you are running C r a n e
Beam . Simply pick H e l p from the menu, or press the F 1 key
on your keyboard.
Chapter 3 : Starting to use Crane Beam : 15

3 Starting to use Crane Beam

Becoming In Crane Beam you always work on a Projec t. Each Proj ec t can contain all the
crane beams for a particular job (limited only by the memory and resources
familiar with available on your computer). You can open as many projects as you like (again
Crane Beam limited only by the memory and resources) into Crane Beam.

When you launch Crane Beam and open a project, then you will see the Project
Workspace window. This shows you all the projects that you have opened and the
crane beams that you have defined within them. The Project Workspace allows
you to manipulate (copy, rename, edit or delete) those crane beams at will. The
Project Workspace also allows you to open any crane beam Definition windows
that you have closed for any reason.

For each Proje c t there is also a Report window which shows you the information
that will be included in the output exactly as it will appear on the printed page.
You can therefore ensure that the information you need is included in the report
before printing it, transferring it to TEDDS or transferring it to Microsoft Word.

For each C rane Beam in the project there are two distinct windows:
the Definition window (which appears for every crane beam), is the one you
use to define the various parts of the crane beam, and where you see a
graphical representation showing the items you have defined.
The Results Viewer which appears as soon as you have defined the crane beam
in sufficient detail (if auto design is switched on) or when you choose to
perform the design. This viewer (the Design Summary Property Sheet) indicates
the status of the design as it stands at the moment and allows you to see
particular results in more detail.
Chapter 3 : Starting to use Crane Beam : 16

Note If you save a project to disc all the crane beam definitions and
results are stored with it. However, when you recall the
project, you will only see the D e fi n it i on windows. This
approach is used in order to reduce screen clutter. However if
you click the Toolba r De sign Icon or select the Desi gn /
Design Crane Beam menu option for any definition window,
then this shows you the D e s i g n S u m m a r y P r o p e r t y
S h eet for that crane beam without performing a redesign.

If you are a first time user it is a good idea to take a few seconds to acquaint
yourself with each of these views. Familiarise yourself with the terms and
concepts introduced in the following sections before you start using the
application, such familiarisation will reward you in the long run, because you will
be able to use Crane Beam quickly and efficiently.

An overview of the main Crane Beam window and each of the views is outlined
below, further information on each view is covered in more depth in the later
parts of this Users Guide.

Chapter 4 : Understanding Crane Beam : 39

4 Understanding Crane Beam

Crane Beam is an extremely advanced product, using state of the art Windows
techniques, combined with CSCs years of experience in the design of structures
to enable you to achieve extremely competitive solutions easily. At CSC we are
rightly proud of this application, and hope that it will increase your productivity,
while at the same time making your work more enjoyable.

Crane Beam Crane Beam is a powerful Windows based design and checking tool for defining
and checking a wide range of crane beams.
Basics
Crane Beam adheres to Microsoft Windows conventions and to the standard CSC
dialog style guide. This means that the operation of this application will be
similar to the operation of all other CSC design applications. You can therefore
get on with performing your designs, rather than worrying about how the
program works.

As with any advanced application it is necessary to familiarise yourself with the

terminology that is used, and some fundamental concepts. Taking the time to
understand these now will amply reward you with increased productivity later.

Projects Crane Beam is based around the concept of a Proje c t. This project may contain a
single crane beam, or it may contain many. You define the layout and loading for
each crane beam that you need (creating them from scratch or copying
previously defined crane beams and amending them as necessary).

Once this layout and loading is defined you can perform a complete check of the
crane beam for adequacy under all the appropriate conditions.
Chapter 5 : Setting preferences : 40

5 Setting preferences

Understanding Crane Beam allows you to set a range of Pre ferences which control the way that
it works. These preferences allow you to control the default values that Crane
preferences Beam will propose for the various items of information that you must provide in
order to define your crane beam.

Obviously if some of the input has been automatically generated for you,
correctly, in this way, then it will take you less time to define a crane beam than if
you had to enter all the values yourself.

Note If any of the values proposed by Cran e Be am (based on your

preferences) are not suitable for a particular crane beam,
then you can simply replace the default value with the
correct value for this particular case.

Setting When you first start Crane Beam you will find that preferences are already set. If
you want to change these, then you do so at any stage.

Caution You should only change settings to cater for modifications to

! design codes etc. The changed settings will be used for all
designs using this steel grade. Your changes might affect the
work of others.

If you want to use specific values resulting from material

tests etc. then we recommend that you add a new grade
containing this information and name it explicitly.

Enter the values for Modulus of Elasticity (Youngs modulus), Poissons

ratio, Coefficient of linear thermal expansion and Density.

connection, however this will be affected by the lighting to give you a rendered
3-dimensional view of the beam.
Chapter 5 : Setting preferences : 47

For a wire frame view (i.e. when you are panning or rotating the display) the
colour you choose is the colour of the lines used for that part of the beam.

Operated the setting that you make controls the size of the impact and
surge loads that the crane beam must carry.
Chapter 8 : Defining a Crane Beam : 83

4. Pick the Class of crane that you are designing:

C las s Q1 Lig ht Cranes which hoist the safe working load very rarely
and, normally, light loads,
C las s Q2 Mo derate Cranes which hoist the safe working load fairly
frequently and, normally, moderate loads,
C lass Q3 Heav y Cranes which hoist the safe working load
frequently and, normally, heavy loads,
C lass Q4 Ver y Heav y Cranes which are normally loaded close to
safe working load.

Note For cranes of Class Q3 or Q4, Cran e Be am caters for

horizontal crabbing loads as required by Clause 4.11.2 of
BS5950:2000.

5. Enter the Data for the crane directly from the details provided by the crane
manufacturer comprising:
Span of the crane - the distance between the centres of the crane rails on
either side of the building or bay containing the crane,
the Minimum Hook Approach the closest distance from the hook to the
crane rail,
the Side Clearance the minimum side clearance for the particular crane
you are providing. This will normally be the distance from the centre line
of the crane rail to the inside flange of the column that is supporting the
crane. You may need to increase this dimension for particular types of
construction,
the Capacity the nominal capacity of the crane from manufacturers
tables,
the Crab Weight information which is provided by the crane
manufacturer,
Chapter 8 : Defining a Crane Beam : 84

the Crane Weight the self-weight of the crane, again taken from tables
supplied by the crane manufacturer.
the Guide Roller Dimension the dimension out from the external
wheels of the bogey to any guide rollers that are present. This information
is only applicable to Cl as s Q3 or C las s Q4 cranes. If the bogeys are on a
pivot system, then you can specify a negative value for the Guide Roller
Dimension to decrease the distance for the crabbing couple to that
between the pivot points.

4. Pick another page of the Beam Properties sheet to continue defining your
crane beam, or, if all the details are correct, click OK to save them.

To define the 1. Click the Wheel Loads icon and you will see the Beam Properties sheet which
wheel loads will be open at the Wheel Loads tab.

When you access this page you will see that Crane Beam has already
calculated the wheel loads for you based on a two wheel bogey.

2. If your crane has more than two wheels, and you want to add a new wheel to
the end of the list click Add. If you want to add a new wheel above the
current row in the table click Insert.
Chapter 8 : Defining a Crane Beam : 87

3. Crane Beam will calculate the wheel loads based on the crane details and
number of wheels which you have defined. If you have details of the wheel
loads as part of the manufacturers data and these are different to the
automatically calculated values tick Override and enter the wheel loads
directly.

Note The value which you need to enter for the H o r iz o n t a l Loa d
is the value of the vertical load to which the appropriate
factor is to be applied to calculate the horizontal forces
acting longitudinally and transverse to the crane rail.

Note If you are defining a crane of class Q3 or Q4, then the dialog
will reconfigure to allow you to define the crabbing load.

4. If the default Wheel Centres (0.5 m) are not correct, then enter the Wheel
Centres which you want to use.

Note The default value of 0.5 m allow for the closest approach of a
pair of wheels when 2 cranes are acting in tandem. If this
condition does not arise in your configuration, then for
ordinary wheel loads the minimum Wheel Centres that you
define should be the crane span/7.

5. For the impact condition enter the Impact percentage by which the Static
crane loads are to be increased for the impact condition.
Chapter 8 : Defining a Crane Beam : 88

Example If you have a static wheel load of 100 kN and you specify an
E impact percentage of 25%, then the load taken for the
impact condition will be 125 kN.

6. Enter the percentage of the vertical load which you want to take for the
Longitudinal surge force acting horizontally on the crane rail.

Example If you have a static wheel load of 100 kN and you specify a
E longitudinal surge percentage of 5%, then the load taken for
the longitudinal surge condition will be 5 kN.

7. Enter the percentage of the vertical load which you want to take for the
Transverse horizontal surge force acting on the crane rail.

Example If you have a static wheel load of 100 kN and you specify a
E transverse surge percentage of 10%, then the load taken for
the transverse surge condition will be 10 kN.

8. For the transverse surge force specify whether the entire force is to be taken
on one crane beam, or whether the transverse surge force is to be shared
equally between both crane beams (at either end of the crane).

Note The s u rg e s h a re d e qu a l l y be twe e n bo t h c ra n e

beams setting does not apply to crabbing loads which are
always taken on one beam within the critical combination

removed from the page since they are not appropriate.
Chapter 8 : Defining a Crane Beam : 90

2. If you want to specify the details of the bracket which supports the end of the
crane beam, then you need to define the Bracket Size. Click Bracket Size to
indicate that this is the method you want to use to determine the bearing
length and then click Select and you will see the Data List for I sections.

3. From the Data List pick the Section Type (from the left pane) and the
Section Size (from the right pane). When you have made your selection
click Select to return the chosen section to the Beam Properties sheet.

Note C r a n e B e a m assumes that the bracket is unstiffened. If you

want to use a stiffened bracket, then you should calculate
the stiff bearing length yourself and use the Length b1
method to specify the length which you have calculated.

4. If you prefer you can enter the stiff bearing Length b1 for the crane beam
support directly. Click Length b1 and then enter the Length that you want
to use directly.
Chapter 8 : Defining a Crane Beam : 91

5. You use the Beam Clearance to define the distance from the end of the beam
to the centre-line of the bracket. There are two possible conditions as shown
below:
there is another crane beam connecting to the same bracket. If so, then
the distance which you specify here should be half the distance between
the two adjacent beams.
Beam Clearance Beam Clearance
Chapter 8 : Defining a Crane Beam : 92

there is no other crane beam on the other side of the bracket. In this case
you can specify a positive value (as above) or you can specify a negative
value in which case this will allow the crane beam to sail over the bracket/
stiff bearing length developing an increased bearing resistance.

2. Enter the Partial safety factors that you want to use:

the Vertical (Static or Impact) + Horizontal loads considered
separately (Gammaf) factor is used when Crane Beam checks your
vertical and horizontal loads acting separately,
the Vertical Impact + Horizontal loads combined (Gammaf) factor is
used when Crane Beam checks your vertical impact and horizontal loads
acting together,
the Vertical Static + Horizontal loads combined (Gammaf) factor is
used when Crane Beam checks your vertical static and horizontal loads
acting together.
. If your crane beam has only one span, then the internal bearing details
will be removed from the page since they are not appropriate.

3. Enter the Vertical deflection limit as a ratio of the span of the beam.

Example If you have a six metre long beam and specify a value of 600,
E then C r a n e B e a m will apply a limit of 13.333 mm and will
flag you if this limit is exceeded.

4. Enter the Horizontal deflection limit as a ratio of the span of the beam.

Example If you have a six metre long beam and specify a value of 500,
E then Cr a n e B ea m will apply a limit of 12 mm and will flag you
if this limit is exceeded.

Note Deflection limits for crane beams are usually far more
rigorous than those for other members. Horizontal
deflections are even more critical than vertical ones since
excessive deflection could lead to the crane leaving the rails.
The default limit is span/500.
Chapter 8 : Defining a Crane Beam : 96

5. If the Flange of your crane beam is restrained against rotation relative

to the web, then leave its box ticked. If this is not true, then remove the tick
and enter the Effective length factor, ke that you want Crane Beam to use
when it checks the buckling capacity of the web.

6. Pick another page of the Beam Properties sheet to continue defining your
crane beam, or, if all the details are correct, click OK to save them.

To define welds The Welds page is only applicable if your crane beam is fabricated either from a
beam and channel or of a beam and plate. It allows you to define the weld that
connects these two separate parts of the beam.
Chapter 8 : Defining a Crane Beam : 97

1. Click any of the icons which access the Beam Properties sheet and then click
on the Weld tab.

2. The only Type of weld which is applicable for a fabricated crane beam is a
fillet weld, so the buttons for the other types of weld are dimmed.

Crane Beam Design
Release 2.0
Chapter 1 : Crane Beam Handbook : 149

1 Crane Beam Handbook

The Fastrak Portal Frame Plus Crane Beam Design application (Crane Beam Design)
will allow you to define an electric or hand operated crane to any class (Q1 , Q 2,
Q3 or Q4 ).

Note There is no difference in the loading or design checks required

for either class of crane. But the robustness of the crane
changes to meet the expected usage cycle demands.

Key features of Crane Beam will check:

Crane Beam the classification,
Design the vertical shear capacity,
the moment strength capacity of the crane beam,
the moment buckling capacity of the crane beam,
the biaxial bending capacity of the crane beam,
the web bearing capacity of the crane beam,
the web buckling capacity of the crane beam,
the web compression capacity of the crane beam,
the deflection of the crane beam,
the welds (for a compound crane beam).
Crane Beam will also report:
the unfactored reactions of the crane beam onto the supporting structure for
the loadcases you have defined,
the factored reactions of the crane beam onto the supporting structure for the
combinations you have defined.
Chapter 1 : Crane Beam Handbook : 150

Throughout Crane Beam Design graphics are used to display the crane beam in its
current state. You can therefore graphically see the beam that you are defining
and the results that the design process has achieved. This allows you to see the
effects of any modifications that you make, instantly on the screen.

The following two sections cover specific areas of interest in the order that they
are utilised during input and result viewing respectively.

Input

Crane Details BS 5950, Clause 2.2.3 refers to BS 6399: Part 1 for the effects of dynamic loads
and impacts. BS 6399 does not give specific values, but instead refers to BS 2573,
which itself does not give completely clear guidance. The values presented by
Crane Beam Design are those that are typically used within the industry for the
class of crane that you choose.

When you are defining the crane details you can either enter the data for the
crane, or you can calculate and enter the wheel loads directly. You should always
use the latter approach if the assumptions detailed in the following two
paragraphs are unsuitable.

If you choose the option to enter the crane data, Crane Beam Design uses the crane
span and minimum hook approach dimensions to calculate the maximum local
and remote static wheel loads.

Each end carriage is assumed to have n wheels and therefore the maximum static
vertical wheel load can be calculated from the expression:

--- Crane
1 Capacity + Crab weight ) L R
weight- + (---------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------- -
n 2 Span
Chapter 1 : Crane Beam Handbook : 151

Where LR is the remote dimension, given by:

Span Minimum hook approach

Beam The default effective length factor of 1.2 for each span is used because the wheel
loads of the crane are destabilizing in nature.

Rail Crane manufacturers give a recommended minimum size of crane rail. You must
also take account of the rail/beam fixing detail, since this might affect your
choice of section.

Loads To allow for impact both the maximum static wheel load, and also the
simultaneous remote wheel load, need to be increased by a percentage. (The
actual figure will depend on the class of crane.)

In accordance with usual practice an increase of 25% is defaulted for an electric

crane, 10% otherwise.

To allow for transverse surge, when the crab starts or stops moving across the
crane, a horizontal surge force is generated. This force is taken as a percentage of
the crab weight and capacity.

Again in accordance with usual practice a value of 10% is defaulted for an electric
crane, 5% otherwise.

You can choose to take this load on one crane beam or to share it between two of
them. For the latter option you must use double flanged wheels or justify the
transmission of the force into the crane beam using friction alone.
Chapter 1 : Crane Beam Handbook : 152

To allow for longitudinal surge, when the crane starts or stops moving along the
building, a longitudinal surge force is generated. This force is taken as a
percentage of the static wheel loads.

Again in accordance with usual practice a value of 5% is defaulted for both

electric and hand operated cranes.

Bearing The Beam Clearance is the distance from the end of the beam to the centre-line
of the support bracket not the distance from the end of one crane beam to the
next.

Design During the design Crane Beam Design assumes that:

there is one crane per beam (irrespective of the number of spans).

Note You can model two or more cranes acting in tandem by

defining the appropriate wheel centres and loads, provided
that the maximum number of wheel loads does not exceed
10.

Crane Beam Design will check for the maximum bending and shear effects. This
includes the condition where only one wheel of the end carriage has reached the
beam under consideration.

Crane Beam Design investigates three design conditions to determine the

maximum bending effects. The different partial safety factors (PSF) for the
various conditions are tabulated below:

no horizontal load; but

vertical wheel loads with impact (PSF 1.6); plus
beam/rail self weight (PSF 1.4)
Chapter 1 : Crane Beam Handbook : 153

full horizontal load (PSF 1.6); plus

vertical wheel loads without impact (PSF 1.6); plus
beam/rail self weight (PSF 1.4)
full horizontal load (PSF 1.4); plus
vertical wheel loads with impact (PSF 1.4); plus
beam/rail self weight (PSF 1.4)

In addition for class Q3 and class Q4 cranes Crane Beam investigates the following
condition.

vertical wheel loads with impact (PSF 1.4); plus

crabbing effects (PSF 1.4); plus
beam/rail self weight (PSF 1.4)

Note Crabbing investigated in both clockwise and anticlockwise

senses.

Crane Beam Design gives the results for each of these combinations for each span
of a multi-span beam in turn.

For class Q 1, Q2 , Q 3 and Q4 cranes the high shear condition is normally not
relevant. Crane Beam Design does not therefore include this check. If the shear
local to the point of maximum moment exceeds 60% of the permissible, then
Crane Beam Design will generate a warning and not perform the check. You might
need to provide supplementary calculations at this point.

Classification In order to reduce the possibility of local buckling for a crane beam a series of
constraints are placed on the geometry.

Flange classification The flange classification checks are detailed below:

Web classification The web classification checks are detailed below:

Chapter 1 : Crane Beam Handbook : 156

For single span crane beams with compound flanges and

for single or multi-span crane beams comprising of UB only,
the web is not Class 3 semi-compact providing -

dNA = the length of web below the plastic neutral axis of the
compound section
= x eq T b rb

xeq - the distance of the plastic neutral axis measured from the
underside of the bottom flange of the crane beam
Tb = the thickness of the flange of the UB section,
rb = the radius of the root fillet of the UB section,
tb = the thickness of the web of the UB section.

Bearing/buckling You can determine the width of the seating bracket by selecting the bracket
section size. If you choose a wide section you may need to provide local stiffening
to prevent the remote portions bending away under load.
Chapter 1 : Crane Beam Handbook : 157

Crane Beam Design calculates the stiff bearing length using the gap details you
have provided and the properties you have specified for the bracket.

Alternatively, you may want to calculate the stiff bearing length and enter its
value directly.

T Tip The use of a bearing pack would increase the stiff bearing
length.

Crane Beam Design does not check the crane bracket for adequacy.

Compression Crane Beam Design checks the web immediately beneath the top flange in
accordance with the first approach given in BS 5950: Clause 4.11.5. This assumes
a 45 spread to either side of the wheel. It is important that the rail joints justify
this assumption. If not the actual stress will be double that calculated.

Modelling two It is not possible to define multiple cranes in Crane Beam, however in many cases
the following approach should prove adequate.
cranes that
work in tandem 1. First define the larger of the two cranes and consider it working on its own.
You will be able to see the wheel loads and such like for this crane as part of
the input procedure. Take a note of these.

2. Now define the smaller of the two cranes and note its details as above.

3. Create a single crane which represents the two cranes working in tandem.
Factor the loads for both cranes as necessary. You can now design your crane
beam for the two cranes acting together.
