Column Base Column Base is a powerful Windows based design and checking tool based on the
requirements of the BCSA/ SCI publication Joints in Steel Construction,
Basics
Column Base. Column Base integrates a range of tools for defining and checking
a wide range of column bases of the types usually found in portal frame and
multi-storey frame design.
Column Base is based around the concept of a Proj ec t which can contain
anything from a single column base to all the column bases required for a
building1. many. You define the layout and loading for each column base (from
scratch or by copying and modifying existing column bases). Once you have
defined a column base you can design it.
Column Base Symbols show you the design status at a glance. You will see the following
symbols in Column Base.

when you use this feature.
Chapter 9 : Defining a Column Base : 75
Once you have defined the details for the column, you then proceed to give those
for the base plate.
To define the 1. When you define a new column base, you are asked to choose the base type
column and give its reference. When you have done this you will see the Column
dialog.
2. Choose the region which is the Section Origin for the sections that you want
to use.
3. Choose the Beam icon to choose the section size for the column.
4. Choose the Type of section that you want to use from the left hand list and
the right hand list will show all available sections of that type. Pick the serial
size that you want to use and then choose Select to return to the Column
dialog.
If this box is checked then the axial force in the column is transferred directly
from the column to the base plate. The welds are only nominal and simply
hold the two parts together.
If the box is not checked then the welds are designed to transmit the force
from the column into the base plate and will probably be much more
substantial.
To define the 1. When you define a new column base and click OK for the column details you
column base continue to define the base using the Base Plate Details property sheet. The
precise details for this sheet depend on whether you are defining a Simple
Base or a Moment Base.
Note The property sheets for a moment base are shown in the
following steps. The differences for simple bases are clearly
indicated.
Chapter 9 : Defining a Column Base : 78
To define the The first stage in defining the base plate is to define the plate itself.
Base Plate
1. If you are defining a moment base, then you can position the column
eccentrically on the base plate in the XX direction by entering the
appropriate value for the Column Eccentricity. If you are defining a simple
base, then the column must be positioned centrally on the base and so the
eccentricity is dimmed.
Chapter 9 : Defining a Column Base : 79
Note You can only enter a positive eccentricity. If you would need to
define a negative one, then you should define a mirror image of
the base.
2. Set the Length of the plate by entering a value directly, or by choosing one of
the standard lengths from the list.
4. Choose the type of Edge Preparation and Grade for your plate from the
appropriate lists.
6. Irrespective of the method of shear transfer that you choose you need to
enter the Coefficient of Friction between the steel base plate and the
concrete base.
Chapter 9 : Defining a Column Base : 80
7. Finally choose the method of Shear Transfer you want to use to transmit the
shear force from the steel base plate into the concrete base and enter the
appropriate details.
Note If you choose the Friction and Bearing on Bolts option for
Adjustable bolts, then you can enter the Factor s used in
calculating the bearing resistance of the bolts. The default
values of zero mean that the bolts provide no bearing
component, while the maximum values give the bolts the
same bearing component as Non-adjustable bolts. You must
ensure that the bolts in your completed base are able to
provide the bearing resistance that you specify.
Note If you choose the Friction and Shear Key option, then you can
enter the Le ng t h and De p th of the shear key.
8. Choose another page of the Base Plate Details property sheet or OK to save
and create your base.

Concrete
Base details
Column Base can handle the calculations for the concrete base whether or not
you know its size:
if you do not know the size of the base then Column Base assumes that the
entire punching shear perimeter can be accommodated within the
confines of the base,
if you do know the size of the base then Column Base checks the punching
shear perimeter and takes account of any part that lies outside the base.
Chapter 9 : Defining a Column Base : 88
1. If you do know the size of the base, then you should always choose Known
and enter the base Length, Width and Depth, otherwise choose the Not
known option.
2. Set the Concrete Grade for your base from the list of grades.
3. Choose the method you want to use to define the amount of Steel
Reinforcement in the base and enter the appropriate details:
Area Reinforcement allows you to enter an area of steel as a value in
mm2 .
Percentage Reinforcement allows you to enter the reinforcement as a
percentage of the total area of the base.
4. Pick the Bedding Material that you want to use, choose the Cube Strength
and enter the Grout Space for this particular base.
5. Column Base normally calculates the bearing strengths for ambient and fire
design automatically from the bases Co ncrete Grade and the bedding
materials Cub e Streng th. If you want to specify your own value then
check the appropriate box and enter the value that you want to use. This
value will then be used irrespective of the other base details.

When you complete your column base design(s) you may need to create a report.
Its scope could range from brief details (sufficient to jog your memory if the
design is to be taken further) through to a complete submission (ready to send to
a checking authority or to your client). Column Base has a sophisticated report
generator which allows you to produce high quality reports that contain exactly
the level of detail that you require.
Setting up the The Column Base Report Generator lets you set the page layout M a rgi ns,

Key features of Column Base will check the base plate size and thickness, the shear resistance of
the base, the size of the foundation bolts, and the size and type of any welds that
Column Base
are required. For stiffened moment bases the design will also check the size and
thickness of any stiffening that is provided and the welds required to connect the
stiffeners to the other parts of the column base.
Throughout Column Base graphics are used to display the base plate in its current
state. You can therefore graphically see the base that you are defining and the
results that the design process has achieved. This allows you to see the effects of
any modifications that you make, instantly on the screen.
Simple bases For simple bases Column Base follows the procedures given in the Simple
Connections Green Book 1.
1. Joints in Simple Construction, Volume 1: Design Methods, Second Edition, The Steel Construction
Institute, 1993.
Chapter 1 : Column Base Handbook : 148
If you are defining an un-reinforced column base with uplift, then you can
now check that the base is satisfactory against bolt pull out. Column Base will
calculate the shear capacity of the cone of concrete subtended at an angle of
45 from the bottom of the foundation bolt. This will be checked against the
pull out force in the bolt.
The conical surface around an individual bolt will overlap with that of an
adjacent bolt when the dimension between them is less than 2 times the
embedded length. When this occurs the compound area is treated as a
hopper.
In both cases the surface area is assumed to fall within the concrete and is
therefore not truncated by the edge of the concrete base. If the cones or the
hopper are truncated by the edge of the concrete additional hand calculations
may be necessary in order to validate the design.
You can specify the contribution of adjustable bolts to the shear resistance of
the base. This is limited to the maximum contribution that would be provided
if the bolts were specified as non-adjustable.
The length factor is calculated by applying the factor to the diameter of the
bolt. The maximum allowable value (used for the non-adjustable case) is for a
bearing length three times the bolt diameter to be used in the shear capacity
calculation. If you leave this factor at its default value of zero, then the
adjustable bolts will take no shear.
The Bearing Stress factor is applied to the lower of the fcu values for the
concrete or bedding material. The maximum allowable value (used for the
non-adjustable case) is for a factor of two to be used in the shear capacity
calculation. If you leave this factor at its default value of zero, then the
adjustable bolts will take no shear.
Chapter 1 : Column Base Handbook : 150
When Column Base is checking for clashes between adjacent bolts, bolts and
steel faces or bolts and steel edges it includes the clearances for form G
washers plus an arbitrary allowance of 10mm in the calculations. If any bolt
fails these clearance checks, then it is shown in red on the graphical display.
The line relating to the bolt on the input property sheet is also shown in red.
When Column Base distributes bolt forces to the inside of a flange or web, the
design assumes that the weld is adequate to resist these forces. No specific
calculations are performed to check this assumption. If you doubt this
assumption, then you should produce hand calculations to prove that the
assumption is valid.
Moment bases For moment bases Column Base follows the procedures given in the Moment
Connections Green Book 1.
where fcu is the minimum value for the bedding material or the concrete base.
If fcbg is greater than 15 N/mm2 then special controls are required at site in
the placing of bedding materials and so an appropriate warning message is
given. A similar approach is adopted for the fire condition, but in this case
Column Base uses the compressive stress
f cbg = 0.8 f cu
1. Joints in Steel Construction, Moment Connections, The Steel Construction Institute, 1995.
Chapter 1 : Column Base Handbook : 151
Note In either case if the User value has been specified this will be
used irrespective of its value relative to the strength of the
concrete or the bedding material.
The Green Book recommends that the extent of the compression stress block
is limited to two thirds of the distance from the compression edge of the base
plate to the tension bolts. Column Base does not impose this limit allowing the
compression stress block to jump to the centre-line of the tension bolts and
then if necessary to increase further until the edge of the base plate is reached.
However in this case the moment capacity of the base is calculated from the
magnitude of the compression stress block and its eccentricity from the
centre line of the column base (i.e. there is no tensile contribution to the
capacity of the column base from the holding down bolts). A similar situation
can arise if the applied moment is small, resulting in the bolt force being

The Green Book gives alternative methods for calculating the punching shear
perimeter when the base is remote from, or close to a single free edge. Column
Base adopts a more comprehensive approach where the punching shear
perimeter is affected by the presence of any free edge or end.
Chapter 1 : Column Base Handbook : 156
Column Base does not hold any details about the reinforcement which is
included in the concrete base. You must therefore enter the area of tension
reinforcement that is provided directly.
For Shear Transfer into the concrete the effects of friction are assumed to
be fully additive with the effects of bearing on the bolts or bearing on the
direct shear key.
For Direct Shear Key shear transfer the capacity of the shear key is calculated
using the formula
V h-shearkey = L sk D sk 2 f cu
You can only specify a positive eccentricity. If you need to investigate a base
with a negative eccentricity, then you will need to define a mirror image of the
base.
For the compression and tension zones the bolts can be placed both outside
and inside the flanges in the following configurations:
1 or 2 rows outside each flange,
1 or 2 rows inside each flange,
one row each side of each flange.
Different numbers of bolts can be defined in each bolt row, Bolts are therefore
only included where they can be used.
Chapter 1 : Column Base Handbook : 157
You can now specify the contribution of adjustable bolts to the shear
resistance of the base. This is limited to the maximum contribution that
would be provided if the bolts were specified as non-adjustable.
This factor allows you to define the average bearing stress that can be
withstood. The factor is applied to the lower of the fcu values for the concrete
or bedding material. The maximum allowable value (used for the
non-adjustable case) is for a factor of two to be used in the shear capacity
calculation. If you leave this factor at its default value of zero, then the
adjustable bolts will take no shear.
Chapter 1 : Column Base Handbook : 158
When Column Base is checking for clashes between adjacent bolts, bolts and
steel faces or bolts and steel edges it now includes the clearances for form G
washers plus an arbitrary allowance of 10mm in the calculations. If any bolt
fails these clearance checks, then it is shown in red on the graphical display.
The line relating to the bolt on the input property sheet is also shown in red.
When Column Base distributes bolt forces to the inside of a flange or web, the
design assumes that the weld is adequate to resist these forces. No specific
calculations are performed to check this assumption.
Stiffened The design of stiffened moment bases is similar to that of moment bases, indeed
all the comments given above relating to moment bases also apply to stiffened
moment bases moment bases.
The design of the gusset stiffeners is based on the method discussed in Structural
Steelwork: Design to Limit State Theory, MacGinley and Ang, Butterworth
Heinemann. Since this might be novel to some readers a brief resum is given
below.
Note When stiffeners are provided the load path from the column
into the base is assumed to be from the column flanges,
through the welds into the gusset stiffener and then from
the gusset stiffener into the base plate. In this case the
welds between the column and the base plate are not utilised
in the calculations, and any sizes you may have specified are
ignored.
Gusset plates The gussets are subject to bending from the upward pressure under the base. The
top edge of the gusset plate is in compression and must be checked for buckling.
To ensure that buckling does not occur two requirements should be satisfied.

Chapter 1 : Column Base Handbook : 160
The moment and shear capacities are calculated in accordance with the
appropriate requirements of BS 5950: Part 1: 1990. The design is checked at
cross-section A-A and provided that the capacities exceed the applied loads the
stiffener is adequate.
Flange Stiffener If you use a flange stiffener then the column must be prepared so that the
compressive load is taken in direct bearing.
It is assumed that the tension load is transferred from the column flange to the
stiffener and then from the stiffener to the base plate using the full profile of the
flange plate and column flange as shown below.
Compression side For compression the base plate is considered as a beam with overhanging ends
base plate loaded as shown in the diagram below.

Since the shape factor for a plate is 1.5 it is appropriate to calculate the moment
capacity of the base plate based on the formula
M = 1.2 p yp Z
Tension side For each bolt the proportion of the force that is resisted by the plate in bending,
stiffener design and that resisted by the stiffener is determined depending on the location of the
and base plate bolt.

For external bolts all the load is resisted by the base plate, for other bolts the load
proportions are inversely proportional to the distances from the stiffener and
from the column flange.
The base plate and stiffener are then checked for their ability to carry these loads.
In the case of the stiffener the load is assumed to be a uniformly distributed load
reaction from the yield lines acting along the length of the stiffener, which is
considered to act as a cantilever.
Chapter 1 : Column Base Handbook : 162
Stiffener welds
Gusset to column For columns not prepared for full contact in bearing the welds between column,
gussets and base plate have to transmit all of the load to the base plate. When the
column shaft is prepared for contact in bearing, then for load cases with axial
compression and moment the column to gusset weld, is only designed for the
bending component.
Gusset to base plate The welds between one gusset plate and the base plate are designed to support
the maximum pressure under the base.
